It seems you are correct, and an retcon has happened, at least in the Movie verse.

And it's wierd, because up to that point they went pretty hard on the "mana is generated and stored in body". I mean I'm pretty sure I even read some sources that equated the amount of mana that a mage can store with their strength. Hell that changes the role of LKs. Before they were mostly there to process mana, but now they have a role in it's intake into the body.

I don't particulary like this explanation because it causes problems with things such as explanations on how a mage can run out of mana. I guess the idea is that replenishment is slow enough not to be a factor during combat since you won't recover much to matter.

I don't think I'll be adding this to my headcannon any time soon, but you then are correct lore wise.

PS: After rereading the food bit, I have realized it's not so much a retcon but a clarification. There are apparently two ways mana can end up in a mage. From enviroment via LK, and by replenishing body's energy via food which is quicker.

“Chrono, please. We’re friends, you don’t have to stand on decorum when it’s just the two of us.” Hayate Yagami said as she sat in front of the desk of her fellow flag officer and old friend, Admiral Chrono Harlaown.

Chrono smiled softly, but continued, “We are here on business, General. I think ranks are appropriate.”

“… very well, Admiral Harlaown.” Hayate said.

“Thank you.” Chrono. “I know it’s inconvenient, but you’ll have to bear with me for the moment. The top brass has been getting some… disturbing reports about you.”

“What sort?” Hayate asked.

“Keeping unusual hours. Repeatedly seen in the company of a young female recruit. Certain… erm… cases of rumpled uniforms, shall we say? And I believe an ensign saw you coming out of a storage closet last week when your keycard said you were logged into a terminal on the other side of the base.”

“… … … busted, eh?” Hayate said.

“I’m sorry.” Crono said. “I know this must be awkward for you, but you know as well that relationships between flag officers like yourself and lower-ranked members have to be carefully monitored. Amy and I had to do the same thing before she too early retirement to take care of our children; we can’t allow special treatment of recruits by their superiors, you know that.”

“Of course.” Hayate said sadly. “It’s just that… well, the relationship is very young, and admittedly a bit awkward. I had hoped to shield myself and Vivio from the public eye.”

Chrono winced.

“… are you okay?” Hayate asked, not sure what to make of the expression.

“Vivio. You’re… dating Vivio?” Chrono said.

“Yes…” Hayate said doubtfully.

Chrono winced again.

“What was that?” Hayate asked. “Is it… is it her age? Because I’m not doing anything illegal. I won’t lay a finger on her until she’s eighteen. And if it’s her status as my junior officer, obviously that’s why I’m here, so…” Hayate said.

“It’s not that…” Chrono said, still trying not to look Hayate in the eyes. “It’s just… well.”

“… what? Well what?”

Chrono murmured something that couldn’t be quite heard.

“C-Chrono?”

“That’s… kind of a dick move.” Chrono said.

“… … … … eh?”

“It’s a dickish thing to do! Dating your best friend’s daughter? Really?” Chrono asked.

“She’s dating who?” Griffith Lowran, Chrono’s current aide, said as he poked his head into the room.

“Her best friend’s daughter.”

Griffith winced. “Vivio? Wow. Dick move.”

“… that’s… that’s what…” Hayate began. “You’re not concerned with her age, or that she’s my subordin-“

“Her best. Friend’s. Daughter.” Griffith said. “That is just… wow.”

“I know, right?” Chrono said. “Just… gah. It’s just gaaaaah.”

“… … … eh?” Hayate said.

“Dick move. Such a dick move.” Griffith said.

“I’m confused.” Hayate admitted, about ten minutes after such a statement was warranted.

“Look, Hayate, if you want to date someone underage, or someone who’s a subordinate, then that’s workable.” Chrono said. “You have to be very, very cautious about it. Give your relationship a ridiculous amount of transparency to ensure you don’t give her special treatment, don’t break any laws, but if you’re willing to put up with that scrutiny the relationship is permissible. But…”

“Your friend’s daughter.” Griffith said.

“Such a dick move.” Chrono said.

“I… you can’t explain why?” Hayate said.

“Because she’s… well…” Chrono said.

“She’s your friend’s daughter.” Griffith said.

“Really? Wow, dick move.” Vice said, wincing.

“... where did you come from?!” Hayate squeaked, jumping about a foot in the air and turning on Vice. “And why does everyone keep wincing?!”

“I came from outside.” Vice said vaguely. “But what about you? Your best friend’s daughter? Seriously, now?”

“Look, why are you all focusing so much on th-“

“Because it’s such a totally dick move.” Vice said.

“… why?!”

“Because it is.” Griffith said.

“It just is.” Vice said.

“It’s so obvious it doesn’t need explanation, honestly.” Chrono said.

“It’s like… Vice, we’re friends, right?” Griffith said.

“Yeah. You’re a pal,” Vice said.

“And if I dated your sister…”

“I would kick your ass.” Vice said without the slightest hesitation.

“But… but why…?” Hayate asked.

“Because it would be a total dick move.” Vice and Griffith said in unison.

“… … I am confused.” Hayate said, thus entering into the running for ‘Understatement of the Year Award’.

“Look. Hayate. It’s like this…” Chrono said. “Dating your friend’s family is a dick move. It just is.”

“But you and Nanoha were friends, and she married your sister…”

“Hayate… when was the last time you saw me really speak to Nanoha? Even be in the same room as her?” Chrono said.

Hayate thought back over the last decades. The Scaglietti crisis, the Einhart Stratos case, the Huckebeins… “… I… can’t recall. Even at work, it was mostly Fate or I that you usually speak too…”

“That’s because it’s been years since I’ve had a genuine conversation with her.” Chrono growled. “She was my friend, and then she… she defiled my little sister…”

“God, what a dick move.” Vice said, patting Chrono on the shoulder.

“Nanoha and Fate couldn’t possibly be happier with each other! Why are you so upset that your sister is happy?” Hayate asked in growing disbelief.

“I’m overjoyed that my sister is happy. I’m happy that she found someone.” Chrono said.

“Then-“

“I’m just not happy that someone found her.” Chrono snarled. “I never thought Nanoha was such a dick, but I can hardly ignore the evidence.”

“She was totally your friend and she still went after your sister like it was nothing.” Vice said sympathetically.

“Dick move.” Griffith said, nodding.

“Why?!” Hayate moaned.

“It just-“ All three men began.

“-is. Yeah, yeah.” Hayate grumbled.

“So, Lt. General. Your… relationship…” Chrono said, saying the word as though it were poisonous. “Is technically not in violation of any military or civilian law, provided you submit to a certain level of scrutiny. You can pursue it as long as you wish… if you’re a dick.”

“Totally.” Vice and Griffith said in unison.

Hayate blinked a few times. She considered saying some words, but honestly, none came to mind.

“Well? If there’s nothing else, I believe our discussions here are concluded.” Chrono said, once again quite suddenly all business. “Good luck with your new relationship, General.”

“… … … thank you?” Hayate said.

“And he really just called you that? Right there in his office?” Verossa Acous said, raising one eyebrow in disbelief.

“I know!” Hayate said, sipping her coffee. “It was intensely unprofessional, and frankly insulting... he's not even my superior! We're in different service branches! He had no right to say any of that, but I was caught so off-guard that I didn’t know how to respond.”

“I can hardly blame you.” Verossa said with a slightly uncertain smile. He had met Hayate for lunch following her appointment, to offer her congratulations if it went well and condolence if it went poorly. He was not, at the moment, sure which he was supposed to be offering.

“Say… Rossa…” Hayate asked. “We’re friends, right?”

“Of course! You’re among my closest, dearest friends.” Verossa said.

“And… let’s say I were to ask out Carim…”

Verossa winced.

“What!? Why do people keep wincing?!” Hayate said.

“Well, it’s just… I mean…” Verossa said doubtfully. He stopped, staring at Hayate as if sizing her up. “I probably wouldn’t beat you up, but mostly because Vita would crush my bones to powder.”

“… … why?!”

“It’s just… well… I mean… my sister… it’s just… a… a…”

“… dick move?” Hayate asked with a sigh.

“Yes. Yes, that’s about right!” Verossa said. “Thanks.”

“And… just out of curiosity…” Hayate said. “If dating your sister was a… a…”

“Dick move.”

“Yes, that. Then… let’s say your hypothetical daughter was…”

“Such a dick move.”

Hayate sighed. “I am not going to be finding a lot of support among my male acquaintances, am I?”

Verossa’s eyes widened. “Wait, you are dating a friend’s daughter? … Jeez, Hayate. I mean, it’s your life, but honestly, that’s a really—“

“Yes, I get the point.”

“Thank you, Nanoha.” Hayate said, taking the cup of tea from her good friend. “I’ll confess, I was expecting to get some flak from people when… you know, the relationship… became known. I understand it’s not really… normal. I can admit that. But I wasn’t expecting such a wall of… well, I guess ‘accepting scorn’. It’s like nothing I’ve experienced. Nobody was openly upset, but they kept telling me I was being a horrible person.”

“I wonder why?” Nanoha asked. “I mean, really. I’ll confess that, as her mother, I feel a bit strange about Vivio seeing you. But I trust and love both of you. I know that if you truly want to be with each other, then you deserve your chance to be happy. It may be… unorthodox. But I wish you and Vivio nothing but happ-.”

Yuuno winced.

“Gaaaaaaaah!” Hayate and Nanoha said, jumping.

“Y-Yuuno?! Where did you come from?” Nanoha squeaked.

“Outside.” Yuuno said. “But… did I hear that correctly? Hayate is… is…”

“… I suppose it’s become public knowledge at this point.” Nanoha said. “Hayate and… and Vivio have begun a relationship. And Fate and I have our misgivings, but we support th—are you okay?” She said, as Yuuno winced again.

“I’m… okay.” Yuuno said, though he was noticeably making an effort to not look directly at Hayate.

“Nanoha, maybe I should go.” Hayate said, standing up.

“No! Absolutely not!” Nanoha said, placing her hand on Hayate's shoulder to push her back onto the sofa. “Hayate, you are going to stay here. Yuuno, you are going to explain why every man we know has been treating Hayate like a pariah!”

“It’s… well. Have you ever…” Yuuno began. “It’s hard to explain. It’s like… well, I mean… it’s good that Vivio is happy. And it’s good that Hayate is happy. But… that they’re happy together, is… well, Hayate, Vivio is your friend’s daughter and the whole thing is… well… dating her is…”

“I… get the picture.” Hayate said wearily.

“No! No, you don’t.” Nanoha said stubbornly. “Yuuno, you haven’t explained what the problem is.”

“You… you don’t know?” Yuuno asked. “I mean, any anger directed at Hayate is for your sake…”

“… … … … what?!”

“Vivio isn’t our daughter. The one Hayate’s being a dick towards…”

“I was wondering when that word would pop up…” Hayate muttered.

“… is you, Nanoha. You and Fate.” Yuuno said, seemingly unwilling to directly look at any other person in the room.

“Yuuno, we’ve given her our blessing. We know there’s some problems, but this is what makes Vivio happy.” Nanoha said, gently but firmly.

“I know, and that’s wonderful, but…” Yuuno said.

“But what?”

“… … … … it’s such a dick move.” Yuuno finally choked out.

“WHY?!” Hayate finally roared. “People have been saying that all damn day! There are a lot of reasons to disapprove of me and Vivio! I know it, she knows it, and God knows it’s going to be damn struggle to fight through it. If you’re going to disapprove, then go ahead! I’m ready for it! But for the love of all that’s HOLY, would you GIVE ME A REAL REASON?!”

Yuuno sighed. “All right. Okay. It’s hard to explain exactly why… it’s like… like… well, it’s how guys work. We know our friends, all right? And we know our family.

Yuuno sighed, as if this next part would be a real, physical effort to say. “And… and we know our friends aren’t good enough for our family.”

“Of course they are!” Nanoha said. “Hayate is… she couldn’t be better for Vivio. She’s kind, and gentle, and wise, and she genuinely cares for her. Of course she’s good enough for Vivio!”

“Is she? Is she really?” Yuuno asked. “Think about Hayate. Not about her good points, but about all the things you only know about because you’re her friend.”

“Well… I mean… um… she’s a bit… into cosplay? But that’s not bad… except when the costumes get extremely oversexualized. Which is always. And… well, there’s the groping. Which… is just affectionate teasing, I’m sure. Except it hasn’t stopped, even though she’s almost thirty and she’s in a relationship now. And she ignores it when people ask her to stop. Which doesn’t speak well for either her maturity or her self-control, really. But really, I know she’s mature, no matter how she acts in private! I’ve seen how hard she works! … really hard. All the time. In fact, she works most of the day. Takes so little free-time. Not really enough to maintain a relationship, I worry. So… so she works constantly and on the rare occasion she isn’t working, she’s sort of immature.”

Yuuno put a hand on her shoulder. “And now, picture that person dating your daughter. Not the elegant, dignified general. Not the person who has made you smile since you were kids. Picture the real Hayate dating your family.”

Nanoha pictured it.

She pictured it for roughly fifteen minutes of the most agonizing silence Hayate could have possibly imagined.

“It…” She finally said, in a voice barely above a whisper. “It can’t be that bad…”

“And it probably won’t be,” Yuuno admitted. “But deep in your mind, you’ll always think it is. On some primal level, you’ll always be aware that your buddy, with all her many, many, many flaws...”

“Not that many…” Hayate muttered, but there was no force behind the statement.

“… is dating your little girl. And she did it, filling you with this worry for the rest of their time together, even though she’s your friend. And Nanoha… what do you really think of that?”

Nanoha blinked a few times. “It’s… it’s rather… it’s rather inconsiderate, I-I suppose…”

“No, Nanoha.” Yuuno said gently. “It’s a total dick move.”

Nanoha looked at Hayate as if seeing her for the first time.

“I… I think I should leave.” Hayate said.

“Maybe you should.” Nanoha said, staring into Hayate’s eyes with… frankly unnerving intensity.

“Like… go home. Get some rest.”

“Maybe.”

“It’s been a very busy day. I’m… I’m rather tired…” Hayate said, taking several steps backwards toward the door. She was afraid to break eye contact with Nanoha for fear the other woman might go for her spine if she exposed it, but she also felt a driving need to escape. “I’ll talk to you later…”

“Don’t push yourself.” Nanoha said very, very quietly.

Hayate turned and ran for the door, sensing that speed was more important than safety at this point. She opened the door and ran out, leaving it swinging behind her.

“Mama says you’re not invited for Christmas Dinner anymore. It’s cancelled, in fact. She wouldn’t say why.” Vivio said.

“I figured that.” Hayate said glumly.

“She said you don’t have to come over on Fridays for drinks and games, either. That she ‘understands how busy you are’.” Vivio said.

“Not a shock.”

“And she has said that it’s kind of… um… hard on her shoes to walk all the way to your door, so she’s going to start dropping Vita off down the street from your house after training sessions.”

“I’ll… I’ll tell Vita.”

“… … … … … … … did you two have a fight?”

“I think for it to be a fight, I really needed to have some hope of winning.” Hayate said.

“Um… do you want me to leave you alone for a bit?” Vivio asked. “I wanted to see if you wanted to go out, but you… don’t seem in the mood.”

“… yeah, I think moping is the order of the day.” Hayate said, smiling sadly. “Sorry, Vivi. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay?”

Vivio smiled and leaned forward to kiss her girlfriend on the cheek. “I hope you feel better tomorrow, then.” She stood, walking toward the door, before halting briefly. “Um… Hayate… a quick question.”

“Hmmm?”

“Well, I saw Zafira on my way here. You hadn’t told him about us?”

“Um… no, the others know, but we’ve been out of the house at incompatible hours lately. I haven’t had the chance to sit down with him. Why do you ask?” Hayate said.

“Because I kinda let is slip, and he… well… he winced, and then said something under his breath. I’m not sure what it was, but…”

Hayate buried her hand in her heads and sighed. “I can guess.”

Well as I'm translating Gears of Destiny... I kept getting... ideas... So I started writing my like first piece of fanfiction, humorous one to amuse myself, so yeah it's gonna be rough...
Well this should have initially gone into jokes buut then it grew and grew, so now it's this is the product.
OH and also the events in this part are LOOSELY based on the events preceding or during the sequence 1. The focus is here on LOOOOSELLLY. I intentionally changed things for brevity and weirdness's sake.

WARNING the characters have been bent, twisted into a pretzel and than had hammer applied to them until they were in the weird shape that served best the writer's shitty humor. Warning the text contains significant amount of Yuuno. People with a violent reactions to him should not read this!
Also, apply up-aging filters (+5 at least) since the thoughts expressed by the characters are most likely NOT suitable to a bunch of 10 year olds.

* Scene, Yuuno's living space *
Yuuno: Tomorrow we are having a day off and I hope finally to confess my feelings to her. And I have an almost perfect plan to do that. It will definitely go better than last N times I tried.
Narrator: Yuuno-kun has been trying this for a while. But either because of getting cold feet...

Narrator: Clearly despite being a student of history he has not learned from it and is kind of doomed to repeat it. Especially since the reality (*khm* writer *khm*) doesn't seem to care for him. But even if he was perceptive of that fact, no one would take it against him if he wouldn't be able to imagine how his PERFECT plan will go.

Yuuno: Nanoha, hi.
Nanoha: Yuuno-kuuun!
Yuuno: Since we are having a day off, how about you accompany me on a picnic‹? See I even have this picnic basket all made, and nearby are some truly interesting caverns. *Hands it to Nanoha*
Narrator: This was Yuuno's first mistake. It is also at this moment that primary interference appeared.
Fate: *breathlessly* N..Nanohaaa...
* Fate used strange eyes and sad look on Nanoha*
* It's SUPER effective *
Nanoha: Oh, Fate-chan. Fancy seeing you here. Oh I see Arf-san is also here. I haven't seen her for some time. Been hanging around Zafira-san, training with him right?
Arf: *embarrassed* Yeah that dog certainly has experience in some interesting moves, but I didn't yet have a chance to make him apply some of his full contact ones, heh.
Nanoha: Oh, that sounds interesting. I wonder if he would like to teach some to me...
Arf: *strangled sound* Ummm, they really aren't suitable to your type Nanoha. They are only for the familiars... *under breath* Dirty dirty guardian beasts... *Wink*
Nanoha: Ookaay. I'll pretend I haven't heard that last one since I'm certain I'm too young to understand the implications.
Moving on. So what is up Fate.
Yuuno: Yeah Fate, what are you doing here? Didn't you tell me you were planning on doing something nice for/with Arf today since you haven't been seeing each other lately?
Arf: Yeah Fate, what are we doing Fate? Yuuno-kun accidentally mentioned it to me earlier that you were panning something special for me, but I didn't mention it to not ruin the suprise, so what is it.
Narrator: Now, this was no accident at all. While Yuuno liked Fate, and had nothing against her, her tendency to stick to Nanoha like glue has sunk several of his previous attempts. Baiting, Arf was not nice, buut he was getting at the end of his wits and so he was willing to implement one of Hayate's suggestions for his „friend“'s issues. Now Fate was stuck. She could either disappoint Arf, who will take it in stride, since she will do whatever that makes Fate happy, but that would not sit well with Fate. On the other hand, she of course had nothing planned and was starting to worry what to do, and it was starting to show on her face. She was preparing to say she was planning something underwhelming to Arf, when the Factor N intervened and scattered Yuuno's plans.
Nanoha: Fate-chan has been planning a picnic for you... aand she even had my mom prepare this picnic basket. Here take it!
Yuuno: Eeeeh!
Narrator: Now Yuuno-kun, should have really expected that if Nanoha was allowed to choose between her own happines and making and helping a friend she would ALLWAYS choose the later. It was after all one of her characteristics he liked after all. So or her it was a no-brainer that she should give their outing to Fate.
Nanoha: And she even asked Yuuno-kun to find a nice place for you, didn’t she Yuuno? Now where was it? There were some caverns nearby, right?
Yuuno: Now see, I tried but the bbest I cccould find was this riverside spot next to some beautifull stalagmites. But I’m sure Arf would not like that…
Arf: Why not? BITCHES LOVE CAVERNS!!
Everyone:…..
Arf: What? We do!
Yuuno: Ss-Suuuure. Here Fate let me show you wwwhere….

Nanoha: I’m sorry Yuuno-kun that I spoiled your picnic day out, but you saw Fate-chan, I had to help her. How could I make it up to you?

Narrator: Now indeed if this was the old Yuuno, this would have been the end of this attempt and this one would be charted up to interference, but this was new Yuuno that planned backup options. So, it was time to switch to the secondary site/plan B.
Yuuno: Soo, Nanoha I have been meaning to ask you, but would you mind helping me on this explore a site. I need another person that is good with search magic and you…
Nanoha: Of course, Yuunooo-kuuuuun. Of course, I will help. Should we tell Fate-chan? She also knows the spell...
Yuuno: No no no, we definitely shouldn’t interrupt her on her day off that she has so meticulously planned.

Yuuno: Nnn No need Nanoha. In fact I have a very complicated and demanding task I want you to perform for me. See that other shore of this lake? The one 10km away? Yeah. I want you to go there and look REALLY REALLY hard, full power & full throttle for additional ruins there. If there are some here, there will be additional ones there, right?
Nanoha: Yes, Yuuno you are absolutely correct. And your instructions are really clear. Just remove as much of the topsoil as I can right?
Yuuno: Yyy yees, you do that. But make sure to look at the farthest part of the lake especially.
Nanoha: Right Yuuno-kun. Rising Heart, Let’s GO! *flies away*
Yuuno: Now to get some actual work done.

Narrator: Now if this was Yuuno-kun from like a two or a year ago, he would have likely stuck around and tried to talk things through. But Yuuno did learn some things during these past year or so, even though he learned almost nothing from his romantic failures. It’s that strange girls most likely are going to try eating him, not in a good way, or hammering him into a pancake. So caution was better in this case which is what caused him to start backing away.
Yuuno: Now… wai… wait a minute!
Narrator: This was obviously too much for Amita’s already shaken state, so she reacted with her first last and middle recourse… violence.
Now if our script writer was any damn good he would be able to recount a exciting battle of unstoppable force and immoveable object. Of a defense mage getting more and more tired while the actions of the one attacking him got slower and slower and she tried more and more of her tricks. Of a mage erecting barriers and an Eltrian Gear teleporting into them. Who will win this desperate struggle and so on. But unfortunately for you the writer is shit and you won’t be seeing any of it… well you could play Gears of Destiny, or click the handy link down there in the signature for the translated version (shameless plugging).
In the end the battle did not really end with a bang, disappointing everyone.

Narrator: It was at this terribly convenient moment that Nanoha decided to give Yuuno a call.
Nanoha: *drawl* Yuuuunooo-kuuuuunnn! I discovered a large fossil over here! It’s an archeological discovery of century! Come and see come and see!
Yuuno: Again, that is paleonto…. Why do I bother? Anyway were you attacked by some strange girl too? I was.
*skies in the direction where Nanoha went*
Nanoha: Did someone attack MY little Yuuno-kuuun?
Nanoha: I’m coming right NOW! Hold tight!
Yuuno: No need for hasty decisions. No need. She fainted at the end. I’m fine. In fact, do you mind helping me with helping her?
Nanoha: Ahh, Yuuno-kun finally caught a girl for himself! What are her eyes like? Sure, I’ll help!
Yuuno: Well I didn’t really… that is not how it works Nanoha!
Narrator: Unfortunately for him Nanoha would beg to differ. That is exactly how it worked for her. Also, unfortunately for poor hot headed Amita, her sister was about to draw away the people that could help her from her. An insult to the injury she gave her already if you will.
Shamal: Nanoha, Yuuno, I’m sorry for bothering you but we need your help. We have detected a strange signature on our screens up here on Artha and we suspect it might be a user of some new magical technique. Possibly from another world. Misstr… I mean Armed Forces representative has been dispatched already to the location to establish first contact. Will you assist?
Yuuno: That girl did mention a sister….
Nanoha: A prospective new friend to be befriended. Sure! You already got one Yuuno-kun this day, I won’t lose to you!
Yuuno: Again, I did not… *glances down at Amita who si merrily bobbing on the waves*
*glances at Nanoha getting ready to leave with that intense befriending smile* …okay I’ll come. It’s not like something will happen to this girl.
Narrator: And that is how poor Amita got ditched and the second injury that her sister caused her, this time indirectly.

Hayate: We have three sources of trouble here. The Materials, the elder sister that attacked Yuuno-kun but assisted me and the Pinky one that attacked me and went away with the Materials.
Nanoha: *stern sad voice, disappointed voice* Yuuuuno-kun, seems you did not properly capture her friendship! You are supposed to ram a big pink column of magic into her and then carry her away in your arms after she collapses from too much friendship. And then you should have her exchange something with you to seal your own… friendship of her!
*Fate’s eyes are practically glowing at this recounting of the end of TOS but manages to pull herself together after Nanoha stops. Hayate meanwhile is watching with amused smile*
Fate: *trying to project her gruff Enforcer persona, and failing utterly* It is imperative we learn as much as we can from the two sisters. Therefore…
Hayate: *butting in and taking back the reins of the operation* will be splitting into three groups per who has best chemistry with the target. I of course will be going after the Materials, since I need to educate that kid Dearche on finer point of who exactly is the Mistress here.
You Nanoha will be going after…
Nanoha: We will be going after the blue one. She sounded like a friendly person (her name is literally friendship editor.) and I need to show Yuuno how it’s really done.
Yuuno: NANOHA!
Hayate: as expected of you and you Fate?
Fate: I I I guess I will be going after the pink… trollish one.
Hayate: Exactly, Arf I expect many pictures of flustered Fate from you, or otherwise I’m cutting you away from Zafira. *telepathy* I KNOW WHAT YOU DO!
Arf: Urk… I will umm see…
Yuuno: Anyway, we need to act quickly and end this crisis before even more girls who only interact with me via violence show up. I am a defensive mage but I have limits.
Arf: Agreed, on the first point. We need to end this before someone ends my mistress with embarrassment!

Narrator: And that was it for the meeting. All of them set off on their own paths. Next time, if there is one we will see Yuuno’s hopes of not being constantly assaulted by females be utterly dashed away.

They TOTALLY just leave poor foolish rash Amita there lying on the floor of a cavern or IN WATER and go away to help Hayate.

It's the end of September 2011 and age I think I'll call the age of Old Iron has begun because when I made a cursory look of the thread in later parts of the thread he seems to be asignificant presence. The old crew's muse definitely has been on the wane for a while by now... unless you are Nanya01.

Anyway before I get into the new things the chrinology of Hayate x Vivio files. As I said it started with DC's slightly cracky story of teenage Vivio crushing on Hayate. The entire thing is very good, also Shigan's continuation of the plot with adult Vivio is pretty much required reading for the thing.

Beyond the layer of rules that governs the universe and its countless dimensions lies unfathomable power. Power that shouldn’t be disturbed, that shouldn’t be awakened. But yet magicians and scientists alike try to unlock the mechanism behind the power. To unlock its secret, it’s argued, is the ultimate purpose of magic and science.

To this day, it’s uncertain what happened when that ultimatum was reached. A day spoken only in murmurs, forgotten in the collective consciousness. It had become a taboo. A dark date in the calendar of history.

Though there are still people alive that can tell what happened that day, they live in secrecy and solitude, their minds warped through the power they unlocked. They saw the horrors and experienced the event.

They were there when the portal opened its gates.

“The quantum-magic-network controller is almost complete. We just need to make a few calibrations.”

“Time estimation?”

“A couple of minutes, Sir.”

The lead scientist nodded and turned to the officers beside him. “As you can see, the project is almost ready to go. All we need now are a few calibrations and our mages to be ready.” He gestured towards the huge area outside the enclosed platform they stood upon. “When we get the signal, the project will begin. Commander?”

Commander Yagami turned to her panel and pressed a button. “Four minutes until the mages are ready.”

“Excellent. Well then, ladies and gentlemen, please take a seat. I’ll return to you shortly.”

The platform enclosed in protective glass hang suspended several meters up in the air so its inhabitants could survey the test area with ease. The officers who the scientist had implied sat down on the first row closest to the window and gazed out, waiting for the project to start.

“This is it, Commander,” the scientist whispered, ”the greatest discovery of this generation. Just imagine the power we can unleash!”

“Indeed,” Yagami murmured. Her eyes couldn’t deny the doubt that she had for the whole thing. But it wasn’t anything she could do about it. It was out of her hands.

“Our devices... Our weapons. Our society. We can transcend into something else! Something marvelous!”

Yagami just nodded at him, unable to take her eyes away from the testing site where her mages stood at the ready. On her command they’d combine their most powerful spells into a singularity, combining it with the controller. The theory behind it was too complex for her to understand, but she knew one thing: the result would be a portal to the source of all things magic. But what it actually was, no one really knew.

The doubt festering within her grew the closer they came to the final command. She wasn’t sure if they were supposed to solve the secret behind the portal. The unknown scared her. Everyone assumed that the insurmountable theoretical power that hid behind it would be theirs for the taking. She wasn’t so sure. She saw it as a pool that everyone shared and which was distributed evenly. If even a little of the power was removed, the balance would be gone. What would happen she didn’t know. But she didn’t want to find out.

All her attempts to stop the project had failed and so she had decided to go along with it, making sure that her people were as safe as they could be. Their armor had been strengthened, their bodies enhanced with a new sort of cybernetics, just because of this project. Still, she knew it wouldn’t be enough.

“Commander, Project Battalion standing-by.” The voice crackled in her ear-piece and she nodded to herself. She felt empty as she gave the word to commence.

At first, nothing happened. The huge area, surrounded by mages within specially-made cages of protective material, was still and silent. The observing officers whispered amongst themselves. Yagami bit her lip.

A small orb of light suddenly appeared in the middle of the test area. It hang in the air by itself, pulsing with a strange light. The mages were unleashing their spells against the absorbing conductors which led the magic towards the orb. Slowly it started to grow, reaching the size of a car. It shone even brighter, blinding those who looked directly at it.

One of the mages started to shake violently. His channeled spell wavered for a moment until it broke, sending powerful magic flying in all directions. The cages withstood the impact, whereas it left craters in the ground where it hit. The impacts only lasted a few seconds until they stopped. A medical team rushed to the mage’s cage.

The officers mumbled, aghast, at the incident. Yagami was drawing blood from her lip when she noticed another of her mages collapse, sending magic flying everywhere. Her spine grew cold as the tension within her grew.

The orb grew even more, faster this time. The glow began to burn the skin of anyone standing too close. Its surface, which previously had been perfectly still, was now wavering, losing cohesion.

Losing control.

The tension could be felt by everyone as scientists and officers started to mumble and modifying parameters within the machines. Another mage fell in his cage, his eyes burnt out from within. The mage next to him started to float, held up by the orb. From her mouth and eyes there was a bright light shining. The medical teams rushed to aid her.

Yagami had seen enough.

“Shut it down!” Yagami shouted, pointing at the lead scientist. “You don’t have any control over it!”

“Calm down, Commander, it’s just a minor malfunction! Just let me check-”

Yagami strode up to him and thrust him against the wall with her arm. His subordinates glanced at the two, but a glare from the Commander made them turn away.

“I’ve already gotten reports of several injuries and two deaths. The orb is glowing and growing, and though I have no idea what’s going on, this was not part of the plan! Shut it down now! Otherwise I’ll do it myself!”

She let go of him and he almost lost his balance. She knew he wouldn’t slump down on the floor, not in front of his subordinates. “Yes, Commander,” he whispered and gestured to a couple of scientists.

Yagami turned back to the window, both observing the field of the struggle and listening on the reports streaming into her ear. Another mage had been floating in the air, light shining through her eyes, but had then exploded into gory bits inside her cage. The medical team had decided it was a waste of time to enter and rushed to the next case waiting. On the other side a mage had panicked, releasing himself from his cage. Another medical team tried to help him, but the magical chaos caused several of them to drop to their knees, overpowered by something they couldn’t see.

Yagami peered at the orb. Something was changing again. The growth had stopped, and so had the increasing brightness, but its surface was quivering. The infinite power on the other side was breaking through. She realized the project had been successful. And, at the same time, she had been right.

“Evacuate the area! The portal, it’s going to-”

Her voice was drenched in a deafening roar as the orb sunk into itself, bending the light around it into nothing and, like a wave against rocks, broke in two. The two parts circled each other in a strange pattern until they combined again, forming an eight. The eight then became a zero and the brightness decreased to reveal a portal with a white glowing edge. Within the edge there wasn’t darkness. There was simply nothing.

“The portal,” people whispered. Yagami didn’t care and checked on her mages. To her relief no one else had been wounded or killed. Their spells had been abruptly cut off when the noise had interrupted her. Now the massive portal just hang in the air, waiting for something.

Yagami was staring at it, intrigued by the nothingness. It sucked her in, infected her mind. She could see something within it. It was calling out to her, begging for her to approach. She blinked and shook her head. The calling was gone.

“What in the world...” she whispered and looked at the people around her. They were all staring at the portal. The mages on the ground, closest to the portal, were approaching it, as in a trance.

“Keep away from the portal!” Yagami screamed into the microphone. “I repeat, keep away from the portal!”

The mages didn’t seem to listen, but still came to a halt five meters away from the portal. They stood there, their eyes open, empty of conscience. Everything was still again. Almost serene.

Then the first thin and sharp shadow emerged from the nothingness. It reached out towards one of the mages and tapped its tip against his forehead. For a moment his head stopped bobbing. His eyes blinked and returned to normal. A moment of clarity to stare at the unknown shape. He opened his mouth to scream as he saw the truth.

Yagami was holding her breath when the shadow floated back from the mage, then thrust forward, piercing his skull. Blood burst out and his eyes rolled back in their sockets. But his body stayed erect, alive.

Two more shadows appeared from the portal. Four. Six. Ten of them eventually hung in front of a mage. In unison the mages almost managed to scream as the truth was revealed and their heads exploded. The colour of the soil beneath their boots turned from dark brown to a sinister red.

Commander Yagami, her breath still held and tears forming at the edge of her eyes, shook her head in denial and backed away from the window. Around her, panic had claimed the observers. Alarms and screams filled the complex. But in her mind it was calm and quiet. She heard nothing but the pain of her mages. And the voices from the portal.

She stared at it as another shadow emerged, a gargantuan and grotesque shape. Her mind couldn’t comprehend it. It warped and turned, but it didn’t make any sense. The panic around her continued. She wondered if they couldn’t see it. Maybe she was going insane. Yet she couldn’t turn away from it.

More shadows emerged behind the giant. They assembled into shapes, impossible shapes. In her world, at least. She couldn’t even imagine from what kind of world these beings had come from. And the whispers. They were everywhere.

“Code Magnolia,” she whispered into her microphone. “Code Magnolia is now in effect.”

At the same moment as she uttered those words, the world of Mid-Childa came to a halt. The code no one thought would ever be used echoed through the channels. It was the trigger that started the machine of war. The project had succeeded. Her doubt had become truth.

And thus, on that day of infamy, began the war that would rage for a hundred years. A war so full with terror that only the souls of the already fallen would remain unchanged, as would the laws of the universe and the powers resting within.

Old Iron so far has been writting Yuuno centric fiction. Also at this point his writting has flaws but has some active interesting ideas.

Swords and shields This one has Yuuno get the idea to use his shields for attacking people with by bashing people that is Signum with them. This one is amusing to me because it unintentionally predicated Yuuno's combat style in Gears of Destiny.

A multitude of bright orbs flooded over a shifting background of random spoked wheels, striating into colorful explosions of white, red, and blue lines that crisscrossed one another intricately as a figure clad in a witch’s dress weaved through it all, chasing after another in a dress featuring a flaring blue skirt on the holographic screen. Catchy music floated through the air from it as mismatched eyes darted to and fro at the imagery displayed. Vivio Takamachi’s face split into an increasingly manic grin as her score on the game continued to skyrocket as she pushed on dutifully through the old computer game her Japanese mother had played as a child.

It was dawn in the Takamachi household, and the teenager was up at an uncharacteristically early hour during this weekend, dressed in a shirt several sizes too big as she sat in the middle of the living room floor, controller in hand as she made excellent progress through the old game’s hardest difficulty. Granted, some may consider her cheating at the game—her unique trait, one of the many gifts awarded to her by virtue of her ancestor’s DNA almost trivialized the game’s mechanics after enough play. Her eyes very rapidly picked up the patterns that allowed Vivio to proceed through it flawlessly.

Who cared what others thought, however. Today Vivio was exceedingly pleased with herself. After much struggle, through coercion, strong-arming, and flat out begging, the young Sankt Kaiser’s efforts had finally begun to pay off, as the night before her mother had capitulated and left the house in her care as she went out to meet up with her childhood friend, the chief librarian of the Infinite Library and Vivio’s current employer, Yuuno Scrya. For too long Vivio had grown increasingly annoyed as both her mother and her employer continued to not spend time with one another as important and lucrative projects within their spheres of interest fell into their laps whenever the other had no pressing concerns and plenty of free time on their hands.

Vivio’s thought processes ground to a halt as she heard footsteps elsewhere in the house, followed by the uncharacteristic sound of her mother humming a song from her childhood. Unlike her teenaged daughter, Nanoha Takamachi entered the living room of the house fully dressed, and flashed Vivio a bright smile and a quick “Good morning!” before making her way into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Vivio blinked at the quick exchange. While her mother was definitely a morning person, she usually wasn’t in this good a mood when she got up, nor would she typically let go of such a fine opportunity to tease her about being up before her, when she would’ve been whining at her for waking her up in the comfy confines of her bed in a futile attempt to sleep in.

“You’re in a really good mood this morning, mama,” she remarked, quickly pausing the game to spring up onto the couch, looking over its back as her mother expertly prepared this morning’s dishes.

“I suppose I am!” Nanoha responded. Vivio watched as the Ace of Aces practically skipped about the kitchen. The teen’s smile grew wider. More fruits of her labor? A resounding success in her machinations?! She was delighted.

“Ne, ne, tell me! How’d last night go, mama?” she interrogated, using her hands and knees to heighten her stance on the furniture. “What’s got you in such a good mood?”

Nanoha let out a melodic laugh at her daughter’s enthusiasm. “Ah, just a stroke of good fortune, Vivio,” she told the girl, a sizzle sounding through the kitchen as she put food on the stove. With her back turned to Vivio, she didn’t see the girl hurdle herself over the couch. “There’s this new training program at work starting up today! They’re—“

She cut off and turned around at the sound of Vivio’s body crashing to the floor mid-transit from living room to kitchen. “Vivio? Are you okay?” she asked with concern.

The mother yelped as Vivio flew up from the floor, her hands slamming hard against the wood table and making the plates laid out there rattle from the impact. “What’re you talking about!? A training program!?” Vivio snapped, red and green eyes blazing with renewed irritation. “Why are you talking about a training program!?”

A bead of sweat trickled on Nanoha’s forehead and she laughed sheepishly, having momentarily forgot about her daughter’s current peeve in life. “It came up last night, that’s all. Yuuno-kun was telling me about it and…”

Nanoha trailed off as her daughter collapsed across the table in overdramatic fashion, causing her to frown disapprovingly at Vivio’s melodrama. The child groaned in frustration. “Why did he have to talk to you about that… there’s plenty of things you two could talk about and you chose to talk about that…”

Nanoha sighed, resting a hand on her hip. “Come on, Vivio, Yuuno-kun was my instructor in magic. Of course we talk about such things, you know that.”

Something seemed to snap in Vivio and she shot up again, slamming her hands on the table once more and rattling it around. “This is ridiculous, mama! Are you trying to force me to take drastic measures!?”

“Wha--?”

“Don’t make me tell Miura to talk to Shamal about forced leave!” she threatened.

Nanoha’s eyes went wide in shock. “You wouldn’t!”

“Try me!”

“She grounded me,” Vivio growled out from her bed, forcing three balls of iridescent light to zip through the air above her in increasingly aggressive patterns.

The older girl could only sigh through the monitor. “Again?”

“Again.”

This would have fit RIIIGHT in the fannon and cannon about 6-7 years ago, but unfortunately no longer. Yuuno might as well not exist and is someone Nanoha didn't even call in the last decade as far as Vivid is concerned. It's all pinkish loli fan service and yuri hinting as far as eye can see. Literally the lowest common denominator. And that makes me bitter and sad.
