I had already said this, but KyoAni really likes to make 80% of the episodes look like fillers and even more randomic than a 4-koma manga, just for to the end (2-3 eps) goes with a true and amazing arc.

Looking at the vol. 1's summary, it wasn't so necessary to change everything since the first novel was really just a fluff and cozy with some (maybe more) ecchi scenes than the anime.

But since for some reason they took a novel that only had 1 volume to do an anime at the time, they can just say that it was a spin-off like show. I hope we get a true adaptation of this novel.

Spoiler for About the summaries:

PS: That Marchosias and Cthulhu at the end just made up for all the moe that they inserted in this anime

PS: Can this novel be considered a true harem? I'm not talking about the romantic feelings part, but more about the girls being always together with Haruhiko. Similar with Rokujouma and Gaworare?

No, there are more, some in japanese others in chinese. Also there are some members who knows about the LN here, not the ones spreading the fake summaries from the wikia.

as other peoples told, based on the summaries i really could doubt kyoani could really true stay faithfull to the novel, look too dark and complex kyoani standarts, for what i see the most "serious and dark" they could go could be something like kyokai no kanata level, the novel while the first volume is more fun the second one is more "complext and little dark and creep" then even if we get a second season i really doubt they will follow it.

kyoani like more "silly" and family friend things, a good exemple was amagi park, they did a big change(with novel writer permition and like) making the princess not being blind because this made the character look too "sad" and tragic and even "less usefull" and being just the dancel in distress, they making her not blind this make her more "usefull"(for plot and fanservice) and more likeable(not for pit but for cute), then any adaptation which looks too "heavy and dark for kyoto standarts will be really changed to be more "family friend".

About "another season" to be fair i also doubt we gonna get one, what we gonna get probably will be 2 ovas and a movie to end the serie as they did to tamako market and kyokay no kanata which also had low sales, then probably the same gonna happen here, instead of a second season we gonna get a "movie" or 2 to close the serie.

^I had the impression that the first volume of the Light Novel was happy go lucky. Especially since Kyoani dedicated a whole season to it I expected an accurate portrial of the story.

On the other hand I read the second volume is much darker than the first one, making any follow up season feel at odds with the first.

My impressions were generally Ishihara direction was excellent, the designers did a wonderful job recriating the world and characters of the story it felt really creative (example the episode inside the "Kuma" world or the epic limbo scene. The things that I felt lacking were (1) lack of continuation between episodes they were very episodic and (2) poor character development thou Mai always looked much deeper then it seemed the characters were mostly left unexplored

As far as i'm concerned the romantic feelings are one of the crucial aspects to it being a harem. Rokujouma actually had romantic feelings from the girls side. In this there's almost no romantic undertones although 11 tried to add to it they really didnt succeed IMO

If we're going to bring novel discussion up, someone should make a novel thread so that there can be free discussion of it there and not here in the anime thread where such discussion is off-topic and can be considered spoilers.

Episode 13:
So it seems that Kyoto Animation didn't build up Mai Kawakami's waning powers, huh?

Anyways, a decent ending to this series!

I wish Enigma could have stuck around instead of being effectively killed. She had a lot of potential.

So did haruhiko end up with anyone? Or harem end?
The anime implied some romance between him and Mai, but not the other girls.

You are in for quite a surprise, considering how radically different the LN is. Not kidding, they also pulled this with Violet Evergarden.

Pray for those whose image reflects off it, for it may only stop through reconcilatory waters or icy voids of the end.

Yeah, I read VE, and I prefer the novels a lot, the anime was bad.
So what happens in the phantom world novels then?

I am also intetested in knowing what the romantic endgame amounted to among other things. I have been trying to find spoilers for volume 3 but couldn't find much
