Mystery / Thrillers

I would like recommendations for very good mystery / thriller anime please. Something similar to Mouryou no Hako for mystery or Monster for thriller would be very nice.

Well, Psycho Pass for starters, because they did have very good mysteries, but it does have a gorey element in the murders.

Then there's:
  • Shiki - Mostly Horror, but there is a mystery/thriller element
  • Umineko - has a gore warning
  • Higurashi - has a gore warning
  • Ookami Kakushi - has a gore warning
  • Gankutsuou
  • Death Note
  • Another

Film wise:
  • Paprika
  • The Kara no Kyoukai Films
  • Ibara no Ou (King of Thorn)

I think that's all I can think of just going by MyAnimeList's own list.

For an unusual set of mysteries, I recommend the "Medicine Seller" stories from Toei and director Nakamura Kenji. They begin with the three-episode "Bake Neko" arc that concludes Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales. That story was so popular that they released a twelve-episode series called Mononoke. In each of the stories, the main character must defeat a demon invoked as a result of human malevolence. To do so, he must determine three features of the demon by questioning the humans around him.

Here's a fan-made trailer for Mononoke:

Shion no Ou has a murder mystery concerning the brutal murder of Shion's parents when she was four. I found the mystery less compelling than Shion's personal story though.

The main boy in Ghost Hound wants to identify the man who kidnapped him and his sister when they were small children. He uses some supernatural powers, particularly "astral projection," in his quest.
