President of Croatia has no power in NATO, but Erdogan definitely does. Luckily, his objections are not based on ideology. He's just shrewd in extracting political capital from crises, and will have to be bought off somehow.
So first, he wants Kurdish individuals to be extradited from Finland and Sweden to Turkey, where they would face "justice". This is out of the question. They'll have to go through the proper procedure, it would involve the entire EU, and cases will probably take years to process. Turkey doesn't do this, because they would be denied. And I suspect that they also don't really care that much. Secondly, he wants better trade deals with the EU. This one is tricky. I've been to North Cyprus, which is like a tax haven/money laundering center for Russian oligarchs. The EU's import bans and tariffs exist for good reasons. Some deals limited to certain industries might be possible. Thirdly, he wants bans lifted on arms trading. This is where the US and NATO are most broadly involved, and where concessions to Turkey are most likely to be made. Also a thorny issue, because the bans were put in place for moral reasons (Turkey's expeditions to Syria are not approved of by the West). But, for example, reinstating Turkey in American-made fighter jet programs in exchange for their support of new NATO members, will be seen as a win-win-win situation by the US, I think.

Let's not forget the irony of this whole situation. This problem started because putin doesn't not believe the Ukranian people deserve their own country, so he invaded to negate them their own language and culture.
erdogan (and sadly, the west for the past century) does not believe the Kurdish people deserve their own country. He wants western weapons (specially now that the russian military complex is stalled) to keep in check any kurdish militia, inside and specially outside his borders. The thing is, just like putin, the more the west bend to erdogan's demands, the more he will want, just like putin he does not want to negotiate, for him it is the whole deal or no deal. But once they give him the whole deal, he will starting adding more to it (like economical aid to help the Turkish economy he has damaged with his stupid erdoganomics). I would not be surprised if this situation escalates and erdogan quits NATO altogether. IMO the biggest irony is that even if the west bow down to his demands, he will still lose thecnext election ... and of course, do like lukashenko and place in jail anyone that dares to say otherwise. Long story short, it was an error to appease autocrats in the past and now it is twice as dangerous as the world is now split between democracies and autocracies and everything in between will have to decide soon enough their allegiances. |
