Tatsuya's surname was purposely named to sound phonetically similar to the word "Four" in Japanese. He's part of the "Four" clan, yet he doesn't have actual surname of the "Four" (四夜) clan (literal translation is Four Nights). That said, cyberdemon is correct about the student president. The student council president literally has the word "Seven" in her name just as the other clan members of the numbered families have the actual number in their name. For example, the student council president in the actual literal translation in Chinese will read like Qi Cao （七草） or Seven Grasses. Jumonji's last name reads like Shi Wen Zi （十文字） or Ten Scholarly Words. As you see, the actual number is in the name and that's how people recognize if a person is from a numbered family.

You'll reach this really soon if you're reading the manga, but the number families are the most influential and powerful clans in the story. There are the ten primary clans (one through ten) and a set of subsidiary clans that are also numbered (e.g. Thousand). The strongest and most influential clan is "Seven", which is also the clan the student council president is in (I believe she is the daughter of the head). The one clan that rivals the "Seven" clan is the "Four" clan. The "Four" clan is also the most mysterious and dangerous clan. Few know little about the "Four" clan. Most that do know are dead because "Four" symbolizes "Death" (like Tatsuya's last name, "death" and "four" are phonetically similar in Japanese/Chinese). The "Four" clan is known in the world for it's small, but elite group of magicians. None of the magicians are below Combat-level (e.g. Miyuki is combat-level) and they're nearly untouchable because they monopolize CAD and weapons manufacturing. Other clans dominate different sectors of society. For example, one (I think the Ten clan) dominates the military sector.
A lot of the top dogs in the first four volume are from the number families. Unofficially, Miyuki and Tatsuya are part of the "Four" clan. The student council president is part of the "Seven" clan. Like I said earlier, Tatsuya has to keep a low profile because he wants the others to avoid him. He doesn't want the others to know that he's part of the "Four" family. The "Four" family is supposed to be shrouded in complete mystery. By comparison, the other 9 clans are pretty open and even have an alliance of sort.
With this in mind, Tatsuya did not go around showing off his abilities. For example, at the 9 School Tournament (Web 2, Second Arc), he invented a completely new move that was to be recorded into the Archives. When given the chance to enter the archives, he immediately declined and deferred the opportunity to the girl who actually performed it. Normally, this is considered a prestigious honor, but Tatsuya declined it without a thought. Why? Because he doesn't want to enter the public eye/official records.
Nobody in the early part of the story knows that Tatsuya is from the "Four" faimly. There are some elder magicians such as the top magician in the "Nine" family that know Tatsuya's background. But for the most part, no one at school knows Tatsuya's true identity. Eventually, aside from his sister, only two others in school know that Tatsuya is from the "Four" family.
The student council president never really confirmed it, but she deduced that Tatsuya "might be" part a clan that once fell out of favor from the "Four" family. In other words, she thinks Tatsuya's family might have been originally part of the original clan, but they've declined and are now separate. She in part guessed it by noticing the phonetic similarity between his last name and "four" (as someone pointed out earlier in this thread).
The other person is Erika- the kendo girl from the "Thousand" family. She wondered if Tatsuya (based on his abilities) is from a "Numbered" family and just started to randomly guess. Well, she eventually got to "Four", and in a rare instance of emotion, Tatsuya told her to shut her trap. Obviously, Erika never brought it up again, but it's pretty obvious that Erika got her answer.
I would guess that if the president had known that Tatsuya from the "Four" family from the get-go, she would have been far more wary because of the clan's reputation (death).
After Tatsuya defeated the Crimson Prince, who is at least on par if not superior to the Big 3 at the First School- Jumonji, Mari, and President- due to his front line military experience (something Tatsuya also has), the Number clans gathered and discussed how to handle the situation. What you have to realize is that Tatsuya led two other Weed students and defeated the famous Crimson Prince- the heir of the "One" family- and his super boy genius side kick (both of whom are already famous). To the outer world, it's like a bunch of NBA Bench scrubs defeating a group of NBA All Stars. It's absolutely ludicrous. At their little meeting, Jumonji (as the rep of the "Ten" family) proposed that Tatsuya marry the student council president. In effect, Tatsuya would become part of the "Seven" family and the Number clans would get another extraordinary talent. And if he thought the president was too old, Tatsuya could go for the president's little sister, who was one year younger (9th grade or 3rd year of middle school in Asia).
And yeah, the others pretty much explained the thing with Miyuki and the "Four" family. They know the only person Tatsuya really cares about is his sister and as such, they're using that control to Tatsuya. I guess I should note that Tatsuya has a really bad impression of the "Four" family. When he bared his skin, it was filled with scars from torture and punishment from his younger days. What's even more interesting is that Tatsuya with his unique "Regeneration" ability was not able to regenerate those injuries and scars.
