Magic abilities tend to be unique between Witches, though with certain exceptions among genetically-related ones like Hikari having a similar ability as her sister.

I kinda like the sisterly bond in this series so far.
Hikari has a lot of potential and definitely quite brave. Can't wait for her to take the skies again. I also want to see more of the 502nd squad in action.

Episode 2:
Ugh, seeing Takami used her magic powers to stop a wave of enemies and collapsing afterwards is a terrible sight to behold. It's sucks that she'll be out of commission for the time being. Meanwhile, looks like Hikari put up a fight against another wave of Neuroi before the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing have arrived. Still, they won't consider Hikari as their comrade until she proves something... |

I like how in the scene Orussia the leader of the 502nd is reading the paper and the article is about how the 501st liberated Gallia and she says im glad my students did well. That was another nice tie in to the Strike Witches.
Im wondering if eventually we will get an all out assault combining the strength of the 502nd and 501st. I cant help but to feel that after Brave Witches end we will get some type of OVA or movie to tie both squadrons together. So far i am liking the Brave Witches i am not attached to any the characters like i am in Strike Witches but this is only the 2nd episode and characters not been flushed out yet.

If they ever went ahead with a sequel that picks up where the movie left off, it's a good bet that the 502nd will also get a good chunk of time alongside the 501st.

Damn, that was intense..
So Hikari was supposed to going to Suomus, Takami using her second form & have a hibernation, and Naoe acts like Messer & Perrine. And Haruka Terui is using softer version of Yuuna's voice, which is good..

Was reminded of a thought I had with Strike Witches. Wonder if this series would be as viable without the blatant audience pandering. How much of the interest here is due to the ears and tails, no pants and bath scenes versus the story told without those elements?

My opinion: The character interactions and slice-of-life parts of Strike Witches hold up on repeat viewings.
The nudity and pantslessness are okay as a viewing hook, but are increasingly less-interesting to me with the passage of time. Brave Witches/the new studio has thus made me happier so far in not slapping me across the face with pantyshots every five seconds. |

Fanservice can be taken or left. The only reason I finished season 1 of Strike Witches (and, by extension, went on to watch any of the rest of the material) is because the world and the characters were presented in a way that interested me. That's what I'm here for.
This season has actually toned down the fanservice a fair bit: the zoomed-in views of flying witches' crotches have basically vanished. The camera angles have basically reached the point where, ostensibly, the world of Strike Witches has been all along: the fact that the girls aren't wearing pants is considered perfectly normal and nothing out of the ordinary, so no attention is drawn to it. The fanservice elements are still there; if you want to look at pantsless kemonomimi girls they're still here; but they're just an accepted part of this world like everything else I think this change is all for the better. Let the writing take the fore. I don't think the series will suffer from it. ...If it does I may lose some of my faith in humanity.

The thing about the World Witches Series is that the setting works very well even without the blatant fanservice: yes, having the girls be clad only in their underwear is a thing, but when they're not pointlessly shoving those into the audiences' faces, the characters and the world itself have enough to offer that they pretty much carry the World Witches Series as a franchise easily. You can easily remove the questionable camera angles and still have a good series, and in fact it's often irksome that the franchise is marred by such, not when there are oodles of world and character building to be found.
Hence why I'm liking Brave Witches a lot more than Strike Witches, simply because so far they tone down on the underwear fanservice quite a lot.

Back when I first started watching the series I tried to... uh... mentally block out all the pandering and general global shortage of pants on their version of Earth, and in that way it's very easy to enjoy the series by pretending they all actually wore proper clothing.
At least for now the beginning of Brave feels stronger and more enjoyable than Strike because they aren't shoving underwear down our throats every possible moment. In fact I don't even remember a single panty shot in the entire second episode. That and Brave apparently strikes a more... urgent call to action than the more laid back approach that Strike had. Not to say that the 501st had it easy or slacked in their duties, but it feels more like the 502nd are in it deeper than their Western compatriots, probably because the front is closer to them apparently. I don't know, I guess while in Strike the Neuroi often fell more to the backseat to give way to the 502st's antics and idiosyncracies, this time the actual threat of war feels more closer to home and real. That is to say while Strike felt more slice of life, Brave feels more of a war series.
