Need an anime/manga based on...

1) animes...can't think of an example
2) manga...like Genshiken or Bakuman
3) Voice acting or singing...like REC
4) Neets (?)...Welcome to NHK or Eden of the East

Needs to have a plot and a story line. I'm also looking for an out-of-the-ordinary type of anime/manga, like Saki, that is not normally mainstream. I am not looking for any shoujo anime/manga. So, any suggestions?

For (1), how about Animation Runner Kuromi?

  • Chaos;Head-Meets your NEET request. Also a bit of a unique storyline, though I found the show to be a bit on the slow side.
  • Summer Wars-A movie that recently came out. It revolves around an online world that overlaps with the everyday lives of nerds and "normal" people alike. (that's a crappy description )
  • Dennou Coil--Awesome series.

I've already seen Chaos;Head...didnt really like it. I've had Dennou Coil for a long time already, but never watched it. It might be one of those "Damn, I should have never left it in the backburner and should have watched it" anime

Here are some manga suggestions:

2) and 4)
Otaku no Musume-san - A 9-year-old girl meets her father for the first time and moves in with him. He turns out to be a mangaka/otaku, and lives in an apartment full of similarly-minded people. Basically, a hardcore otaku trying to be a reasonable parent to a normal girl. Hilarious and heartwarming.

3)
if you don't mind ecchi dialogue (no visual fanservice though)... Koe de Oshigoto - A girl gets hired as a voice actress by her older sister's company... which she soon learns is an eroge company. (An OVA of this is coming out this fall!)

You're missing out on one of the best shows released in the past five years. Perhaps the fact that it's about kids has put you off? Whatever the reason, put it on the front burner.

Edit: Since my avatar comes from Summer Wars, you can guess I'd endorse that, too!

I'm going to second Summer Wars. I watched it on my flight to India twice.
