It's the exact same rating as last week, but I still do hope they deliver something more groundbreaking later on.

Question: How does Japanese television work for day or evening programming (regular commericals rather than infomercial late-night programming a lot of anime is in presently)?

I ask because I've heard a lot about late night programming and that production companies buy a timelot and host their own commercials in an effort to gain back their money for not only the timeslot but also the cost of producting the anime. I am wondering is it is different for daytime, afternoon, or evening (though not prime time) programming.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 will be in the 5pm timeslot on TBS and MBS stations starting sometime in April and I am curious as to what sort of things go on for "regular" television (since most of what I've been seeing in anime has been aired in the late night slots...at least originally).

That appear that it will be a rated show if Suzuku's lists are as I think they are.

Day-time anime generally follow the regular standard of ad-generated revenue based off of ratings. Shows like Hunter x Hunter, Conan, Uchuu Kyoudai, OP, etc. recoup their costs through that model as well as mixed media (games, movies, manga sales, figmas).

Late-night anime generate very little revenue off of ads, if any at all. Most of their revenue is generated through home media (DVD/BD) sales and, like day time anime, mixed media.

The exceptions to this are the noitaminA and Nichigo (the TBS slot you were referring to) slots. They are a bit unique because they generate revenue using both models (home media and ratings). noitaminA is of course a late-night slot though.

Also to my knowledge Yamato 2199 is not airing on Nichigo this April and has been releasing episodes via OVAs since last April.

Oh okay, I see. Wow. I didn't think Nichigo would air a show that wasn't even originally produced or it.

It's Yamoto, it will probably get the best ratings the Nichigo block and its predecessor will ever have... I bet they agreed to this when Gundam AGE was killing the time slot.

I think Magi is the ceiling for the timeslot. Can't see it going back to averaging 5-6% like in the Douroku days.

I dunno, Space Battleship Yamato is a whole different beast, especially when those who grew up with it decide to tune in along with the usual Nichigo audience. The OVAs have been doing pretty good too, IIRC?

I think the article was calling the original the "gold standard" other shows were set against. But that was a long time ago....and the original didn't do well in the rating for the first or third seasons (first season us up against "Heidi of the Alps" if I recall. Third I really don't know, just that is was to a point they cut the show in half while airing....though that was fro 52 episodes down to 25, with the first and second seasons were both 26 at that point (first season was also cut from 39 to 26). The last episode of the third season had an average rating of 15.4% on Yomiuri Television in April of 1981.

(First season's last episode had a rating of 6% in March on 1975
while the Second season's last episode had a rating of 22.9% in April of 1979)

The second season didn't have any ratings problems that I am aware of.

Yamato originally went the Star Trek route. Fandom that spread like windfire in repeats and clubs. Leading to the second season.

Yamato 2199 is selling really will on BD and DVD judging by the thread about that subject (averaging around 35,000 for both BD and DVD together per Chapter). Chapter 4 just came out in theaters last week and they sold out of their limited edition BD in just a few days, faster than the previous releases even though they are in more theaters than before (12 up from 10).

As of now ratings have stoped leaking on 2ch before the official release of the top 10 every wednesday morning in Japan on video research's website.

Check http://www.videor.co.jp/data/ratedata/top10.htm section 5 for weekly updates.
