thats true... unless every IS has ECM's set in the power armor. if the shields are only kinetic barriers then im not so sure if a nuke can be survivable for an IS operator

Ugh... you guys are reading too much into the technology in this LN. This is MF's Light Novel we're talking about, which content are usually lighter than Dengeki's LN(such as Index). No one ever ask about how the funnel in Gundam fly right? or even where the hell those Gundam get the power they needed to move that long. Well, it also applied here. The absolute defense barrier is a plot device that is inserted to keep no pilot in the novel get killed, whether it's from a nuke bomb or IS weaponry. In the first place, how can you even explain technology behind a flying armor which core have consciousness(Byaku Shiki's consciousness is in the form of a little girl and it spoke with Ichika in his subconscious before Byaku Shiki "evolved" into his 2nd shift form). I'm sure once there's a weapon that can breach "absolute defense barrier", there's going to be another plot device like the IS' consciousness is protecting the pilot's life using other kind of skill or something.

But in the first place I'm into this series for Ichika and his harem circle XD. It wouldn't hurt to discuss about the technology in IS, but I'd rather not dwell too much about it and talk about more Ichika + harem antics

Also: Byakku Shiki's core has a consciousness in the form of a little girl!? Oh boy, imagine the implications it can bring.

This hasn't stopped a mecha board from finding ways to defeat an IS with the least amount of overkill as possible. I remembered a topic that I started somewhere that involving pitting mechs from Armored Core against IS.

IS can be defeated since once it enter "absolute barrier defense", the pilot will be unconscious and the IS will stop operating, which basically it's defeated anyway since it then can be transported elsewhere. The barrier only prevent the pilot from getting killed, not to prevent an IS from being defeated.

so thats why... if ever an IS was seen in a battlefield... it will take a lot of casualties and heavy guns just to knock out a single IS

Skimming through the tech thread, I find that IS technology are way too Convenient and far too powerful.

I mean, i can live with powerful- size isn't proportional, but convenient just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

well, like I said, this is MF's LN we're talking about. Don't read about it too much. Just think of them as extremely technologically advanced tank or fighter jet that have a pilot protection protocol that won't let the pilot die.

Continuing from last summary

Spoiler for vol 6 chapter 3 part 2:

The training for Cannonball First begin. Ichika and Cecilia are asked to demonstrate ultrasonic maneuver for the class. Ichika doesn't know how to activate ultrasonic vision, lucky for him, Cecilia told him through private channel how to activate it. When the demonstration begin, as expected Cecilia is better at the maneuver and Ichika get left behind, but after a while, Ichika manage to catch up to her before the demonstration begin.

After the demonstration is finished, Yamada-sensei praise Ichika for being able to do the maneuver that well even though that was his first time. Ichika get distracted by Yamada-sensei's bust and Laura notice this and asks "So you actually like big breast better?"(Laura's is considered small for them) and get mad and turn his head away using her AIC system when he press further why she ask that. The training start, and the training-IS user starts to train in earnest to try to impress Chifuyu. Yamada-sensei also equip her personal IS to instruct the student, but her undersized suit make her big bust standing out even more. Chifuyu then scold Ichika and tells him to meet Houki to discuss about the energy distribution setting since both their IS is the type that's doesn't get any add-on for the match. For the record, Ichika and Houki are on the no add-on group. Cecilia and Rin are on the additional package installation group, Laura and Charlotte are on the additional thruster group. While talking with Houki, Ichika finds out Houki also have problem with energy distribution of her IS since she hasn't mastered her One-off ability yet, and Akatsubasa doesn't have enough power to activate all the thruster in its body to achieve supersonic speed without using the One-off Ability(Byaku Shiki on the other hand is installed with a specialized high speed big thruster on its back which take less power than Akatsubasa normal thruster on its back and wing). Ichika noted that Tabane seems to develop Akatsubasa with its One-off ability as the basis so the only way to use Akatsubasa effectively is by mastering it. Ichika suggest only using Akatsubasa's wing thruster or back thruster(Aka Tsubasa need both of them to reach maximum speed), but Houki noted that she can't win the race with only using one thruster. When asked by Houki how will Ichika handle the energy distribution in Byaku Shiki, Ichika answer that he will seal Yukihira and focus all the energy to his thruster. "Then how will you deal with enemy's attack?" ask Houki. Ichika answer he will just evade them. "Then how about when you want to do the attack?" add Houki. Ichika answer that he will just ram his IS into the enemy. It's very Ichika-like said Houki.

After that, Ichika left Houki since Houki wants to think alone how to deal with the energy distribution. Ichika than meets with Laura and Charlotte, who are busy tuning their IS to accommodate the additional thruster. Both Laura and Charlotte than offer Ichika to link with their vision during the test run so Ichika can learn about piloting in supersonic speed. Ichika learns how the turning technique in supersonic speed from this linking experience and thank Charlotte and Laura.

After that, Ichika starts to tune his own IS. Yamada-sensei notice this and approach him. She asks if Ichika wants to do a training match with him and Ichika agrees to it. During the match, Ichika can match Yamada-sensei speed wise(she's using the same IS type as Charlotte, but the basic one, not customized like Charlotte's), but Ichika get careless and cannot evade Yamada-sensei's grenade attack and he stray out of the race course(which means he lose in if it happens in the real race). Ichika then starts to re-tune his IS after parting with Yamada-sensei(and thinking that Yamada-sensei is very skilled as expected of a former Japan representative candidate student.

At night, Ichika, tired after getting a spartan training from Laura, is invited by her to dinner. Ichika notice Laura is using a cute clothes and comments that she looks like an ojou-sama. Laura starts to get very embarrassed and throw a fit(which actually hurt since she's an ex-army) at Ichika. To stop this, Ichika grab Laura and hold her in princess cradle(T/N : the gesture where a groom take a bride in his arm, how do you call this in English again? Please tell me the right word so I can edit this) while walking to the cafetaria. The other students in the cafetaria notice this and start to ask Ichika to do the same for them too. Of course, Ichika reject the request by saying he's not giving that kind of service. Both of them then start ordering their food, but Laura hold back when she wants to order choco pudding. Ichika comments that since Laura is light, wouldn't order a choco pudding will be fine?. They ends the dinner with Laura issuing a challenge to Ichika by saying she won't lose in tomorrow's Cannonball First.

There's still a little part of chapter 3 about the match, but I think I'll stop here for today. I'll try to finish up tomorrow =P

If the TVA follows the LN correctly, here is what's gonna happen in EP04

Spoiler for Possible EP04 story:

Ichika and Rin engage in a duel, and Ichika, still without enough experience in IS combat(or rather basic IS control and understanding of knowledge) faces heavy disadvantage.

But then an unidentified IS falls from the sky and lands inside the IS Arena, penetrating the protective energy shield (to protect gallery from any stray attack from the match)

IS Academy is alearted and prepares to dispatch defense force, but Ichika realizes that the unknown IS is strong enough to pierce the protective shield, which basically means it is holding every gallery inside arena at risk, and decides to buy time until rescue is arrived.
(The intrusion alert caused the blast door to close shut, trapping the gallery inside arena stand)

Observing the intruder's rather abnormal appearance, (a bulky full-body armor type, with no bare skin visible) and its strange behavior, Ichika begins to suspect that the intruder might be unmanned IS. (Which Rin disagrees since every IS needs pilot to operate)

Together, Rin and Ichika fight against the intruder but since they both spents quite a lot of energy during the duel, they face disadvantage. The enemy IS is jus too agile for inexperienced Ichika to score a direct hit with his weapon.
(Chihuyu and Maya don't seem to have personal IS at this point, and Cecilia can't join the fight since she is located outside the Arena Sheild.)
(The intrusion alert also caused the Arena Shield to be boosted in strength - level 4 - as a protection measure)

With barely enough energy to activate Reiraku Byakuya (energy-negating attack) just once more, Ichika is struggling to come up with a plan. That's when Houki, entering the broadcasting room inside Arena(still outside the shield) tells Ichika that if he is a man, he should be able to dispatch it without much trouble.

The unknown IS reacts to Houki's words as if she drew its interest, and Ichika fears that it might attack Houki.

Ichika tells Rinn to use her remaining energy and shoots a full-charge Shock Cannon, and she reluctuntly does so, worried that the enemy would evade it just like before, during the battle.

She fires the Shock Cannon, but then she sees ichika charging ahead, with his back directly on the line of fire from the Shock Cannon.

But as the shock hits Ichika, he uses its energy as a additional propellent for his Ignition Boost.
(Ignition Boost works as the propellent particles are expelled from his thruster nozzle, sucked in again, and compressed once more before finally being released, which means he could use outside energy source to boost the thrust - although his IS could receive some heavy and possibly serious damage)

With faster-than-normal-Ignition-Boost charge, Ichika slashes at the intruder and manages to slice off one of its arms, but he also receives a counter from it and is knocked down.

But his plan was not over. His final slash with energy-negating attack also tore through the Arena Shield, and Cecilia is waiting on the other side of the opening, with all her weapons lined up. Concentrated fire from Her BT weapons cuts down the intruder, ultimately silencing it.

(During the fight, Ichika was on a private channel with Cecilia for a possible coordinated attack. Estimating that his final attack might not be enough to deal decisive blow to the intruder, Ichika managed to get Cecilia ready for a final blow, and Cecilia, frustrated at the situation where she could not join the battle due to the Arena Shield, was happy to help.)


As a result, the class representative match was canceled, but Ichika and Rinn, having fought together, quickly reconciles.

Thanks to the summaries I know now that that gauntlet in the 1st ep preview battle, neutralizes energy based weapons.
But can it do more then that, because if neutralizing is the only thing it can do it's more of a counter-weapon instead of a defensive or attack weapon.
Does it also do something else like the Gurann from Code Geass, where it can concentrated fire or use a area burst.

And just having one function wel seems kind of disappointing, because gauntless based weapons are just freaking awesome hands down.

As far as IS is concerned, Byakku Shiki's energy-negating attack is one of the most powerful abilities among all IS.

Energy shield is the key defense mechanism for IS, and Byakku Shiki's One-Off ability enables Ichika to attack other ISs as if they have no shield at all.

That means a single direct hit from this attack is almost always fatal - It doesn't have to be head or torso. Getting a limb chopped off would be considered a very serious injury - and would cause the opponent's IS to trigger Absolute Protection, depleting its energy reserve.

In this sense, Ichika's One-Off ability could be called the ultimate attack.
(It's so powerful that its advantage is offset by a quite serious penalty - that it continuously drains its own shield energy while this ability is active.)


And about the new weapon, Setsura, in 2nd Form...

It's a multi-purpose arm unit that can be transformed to function as a number of different weapons.

So far, 3 modes are shown in LN.

1. Large caliber long range charged particle cannon.
2. Energy shield with energy-negating ability.
3. Energy-based extendable claw.

1 enables Ichika to engage enemy in ranged combat. In fact, this is the only means of ranged attack for Ichika.
It is powerful enough that one direct hit sent Silverior Gospel temporarily reeling.
But it uses up lots of energy reserve, and since it shares the energy used for thruster, excessive usage could seriously hinder the use of Ignition Boost.

2 is extremely effective against enemy mainly equipped with energy-based weaponry, since it could neutralize all incoming energy attack.
But since this shield is another application the One-Off ability, using this shield also drains his own shield energy too, thus the usage is limited.

3 is perhaps briefly featured in the prologue of TVA, when Ichika deals the final blow to Siverior Gospel. Seems quite powerful... Um, Shining Finger...?
