You should watch Angel Sanctuary : it has 3 episodes. It fit your description.

Seirei no Moribito and Death Note would probably appeal to you.

So you want good Action/Adventure?
How about the following:
Baccano! - I can't say it is very adventure full since series are about train robbery. But it has a very unique style of story telling which I personally liked. Every character played a big role in the series even if they seemed unimportant at first. Also really nice action. For me series got interesting after episode 2.

Berserk - great action series set back in knight period. A lot of likable characters and interesting story with some adventures.

Claymore - another series based in knight period. However, here females do all the butt kicking.

Code Geass - if you want to try mecha series

D.Gray Man - cool shounen series with some interesting travels

Fullmetal Alchemist - is one of the best shounen out there with some nice action, interesting story and a lot of traveling. Series have 2 seasons but they are not connected. Every season has its own story. 1st season is anime original while second season follows manga. I recommend to watch both because every season has something that other lacks.

Inuyasha - old series, almost classic now. Has nice action, interesting characters and a lot of adventures.

Katanagatari - if you don't mind a lot of talking... and by a lot I really mean it.

Samurai Champloo - unique series with really nice sword action and adventure

Sword of the stranger - great samurai movie with very good sword action

Tales of the Abyss - not the best series but fit Action/Adventure tag perfectly. If I were to watch them as newb I'm sure I would've enjoyed them FAR more. Hopefully it'll be of your liking.

That's mostly all I can suggest for now.

Moribito was the first show to come to mind for me as well, and you can watch it for free at Crunchyroll. Once you're there, you can browse through the dozens of shows they have available for free legal streaming. Hulu is another good source for legal streams.

You can also take a look at top-rated shows as voted on by viewers. ANN, AniDB, and Anime-Planet are the best-known places for ratings.

I second most of what kitten320 recommended, except for Katanagatari and Tales of the Abyss - as I haven't watched them.

Apart from that, my personal recommendations are

Blood+
Eureka 7
GunXSword
Darker than Black
Gurren Lagann
Black Cat
Fate/Stay Night
