I don't think STUDY has their hands on the Parameter List, they would be more actively targeted otherwise.

As for why they have such free reign, AC has shown to let pretty outrageous things slip by them to collect data, so STUDY's activities could very well be being guided for another purpose. That is how this city works.

So STUDY have long resented that espers got the fame and recognition while intellectuals like Aritomi are ignored. And the trigger that made them proceed project Chemicaloid was none other than Gensei himself, who belittled STUDY's ideas as a "Summer Science project".

With Anti-Skills unable to help them fight against STUDY's mech army and their plan to show the world that science not birthright creates espers, Team Railgun must face them themselves as they also rescue Shinobu, Janie and get the neutralizer data.

The finale is going to be action packed. And i hope Team ITEM gets involved since Team Railgun can't fight all of those mechs themselves.

I was wondering about ITEM also, but after seeing their preparations, I'm thinking probably not. They seem to have some special equipment prepared and Mikoto seems to have asked the sisters for help. And of course a level 5 who could probably take all of the suits out if she wanted (now that she knows it is unmanned) if they didn't spread out over such a large area.

As fun as the build-up was, I feel like it's lacking something. It doesn't feel like an build-up to a huge climax like the penultimate episodes of the Sisters Arc were and the motivation of our antagonists is more like the actions of a rebellious child clawing at its parents than something huge like the Sisters Arc or even the Poltergeist Arc.

Not to mention that ITEM was seemingly only tossed in for fanservice and hasn't done a thing.

Normally, the conglomeration of the good guys before a final battle is supposed to have a tense feeling but this episode just lacks that.

Well, normally the conglomeration of good guys isn't going off to fight a bunch of crappy mass produced robots (which don't even seem to have guns... at least Thelestina's were armed) with only a very generic order guiding them which several of the girls can take out very, very large amounts of on their own.

Maybe STUDY has some trick left? But with only 1 episode left, it can't be much...

From the episode preview outcome, i doubt it.

Terestina brought out the giant mech last episode of season 1, so it's possible they could be hiding something big.

A giant useless mech... I mean seriously, did she think her genius plan to back up when Mikoto tries to use her railgun would somehow allow her to defeat Mikoto when she can do lots of other things with her power like rip the mech apart?

I'd say Thelestina's real trick was capacity down inside that facility... though the fact that neither Uiharu or Mikoto noticed that it was installed there when they were in the control room looking for the kids seems far too convenient.

Nice idea for the story. Terribly thought-out villains. But still a good arc for the characters.

+1 million points for Nunotaba

With most conflict-heavy anime shows, people tend to assume that the protagonists will win in the end. Because far more often than not, they do. So that default position is in the back of the viewer's mind.

The trick, though, is to make the antagonists so threatening, so compelling, that the viewer temporarily forgets that. It's to make the viewers think "Oh wow, how are the protagonists going to overcome this?!"

This episode made a slight attempt at this with the "Over 20,000?!" bit that I'm sure the writing staff hoped would make us all go like scouter-crushing Vegeta in shock and awe.

But there's two problems...

1. We haven't seen these antagonists do anything yet, other than be an annoyance and worry to the protagonists. Aritomi talks the talk, but he's never walked the walk. There's nothing of import he's actually accomplished yet to make him seem threatening. Now, I did briefly get hopeful with all his talk of "Revolution". But then...

2. The episode ends on a decidedly upbeat note, with all the protagonists coming together in a big "Rah! Rah! Rah!" moment. That's a great scene to have a few minutes into the final episode, but as a cliffhanger before the final episode, it's the complete opposite of what is most effective. A good cliffhanger makes the protagonist situation seem dire. The very term "cliffhanger" originates from the idea of a "Man hanging off a cliff for dear life". But the ending to this episode makes it clear that the antagonists are the ones in a dire situation.

Combine these two together, and it's just painfully, painfully obvious that the antagonists are going to get their asses completely handed to them next episode. In fact, they'll be lucky if they don't get embarrassingly curbstomped. I actually feel sorry for Aritomi and his allies, because it's so obvious that they're going to job harder than Mick Foley in a Hell in the Cell match.

Thinking back on it, I almost have to laugh at how Mikoto stressed how "serious" Aritomi is. It's like she's doing a Winston Churchill impersonation in a desperate attempt to get the audience to take her latest enemy seriously.

Oh well, at least the episode was good on the character development side of things for Mikoto. I'm glad that she did, in fact, provide a means to Kuroko to track her down if necessary.

But yeah, it's time for the entire Esper/Judgment League to deal with that Riddler Aritomi once and for all! I don't know about you, but I am pumped to find out how SuperMikoto will manage to overcome this absolutely fearsome foe who's words are so very tricky, and who's plans nobody could possibly figure out.

What a sad group of villains. A bunch of likely naturally born geniuses resenting naturally born talented espers...this is just sad. It's like the guy in your class who is super intelligent complaining that someone else having a skill he lacks. At least they've set things up for it to be incredibly enjoyable when they get curbstomped next episode.

I think the most hilarious scene though will be the Saten+Uiharu combination. They are spread a bit thin aren't they ?

My condolences to Kuroko. Mikoto felt it was better to painfully turn herself into a human stungun rather than wait for Kuroko and be in a vulnerable paralyzed state...can't blame her of course .

No, esper aren't born but developed in the city through experiments.

Mikoto is more smart, I guess she was attacked by PIS.

Edit:
I'm more concerned about:

1. Why didn't Study get their hands on that disruptor called capacity down?

2. Why didn't they hire any anti-esper specialist or mercenary group?

3. Why the anime staff is so cruel against Study?

Their defeat is so evident that I'm gonna fel bad once they get theirs asses kicked .

Wait a minute. If Misaka could use her powers when she was still poisoned, why didn't she just zap Aritomi after he broke Febri's cure-thingy?

She probably couldn't think about that option at the time. Besides, she has no control over which nerves are stimulated when she does that. The greatest evidence of that was that she still felt pain. That is something that would also be blocked if neurotransmitters were blocked in her synapses.

I don't mean why didn't she use her powers to start moving. I mean why didn't she just shoot some electricity at him to knock him out?

Because she probably couldn't.

She could only start using her powers after most of drug had worn off.

Some maybe. But plenty already had their abilities before they even got to that city, thus the comparison stays valid.

1. They probably want to surpass espers and not just negate their abilities.

2. They are a bunch of arrogant geniuses who think they can handle everything themselves? Could have also gotten themselves blacklisted a bit by hiring ITEM only to attack them. And again doesn't prove that their genius is all that matters if they have to share the credit with mercenaries or specialists.

3. They wanted a group that would be enjoyable to curbstomp ?

Fixed for ya.

At least this time I had a laugh when Gensei sneered at Study... Honestly, they are really missing the point with that research.
