My mother isn't exactly a big fan of Japanese animation, but when she saw Basilisk along with me, she said that it was a good show.

She's still not a big fan of anime but she respects that I like it, so I guess I'm lucky

I've never had a problem with my parents, insofar as my anime habits are concerned, but I can't seem to get them to even give it a chance. It's very weird to me, because they greatly enjoy animated films by Disney/Pixar, but refuse to give anything with a Japanese background a chance. For example:

Me: "Would you guys be interested in seeing a movie with Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith and Billy Bob Thornton in it?"
Them: "Yeah, that sounds like a great cast!"
Me: "Cool, lets watch this then!" *Hands them Princess Mononoke case*
Them: "No, we're not interested in watching that."
Me: "Why?"
Them: "We're just not..."

Don't ask me how that makes any sense, but that's always their excuse, and they're very unwilling to bend. They don't chastise, berate, bother, or otherwise intrude in my enjoyment of anime, they just have no particular interest in it whatsoever. Go figure...

My brother seems to think of anime as Japan's way of invading the world again. I have to give up arguing with him about this.

My mum on the other hand, caught me watching Ikoku Irokoi Romantan( the part where the guy is sexually assaulted and you can see semen flowing) and then another time when i was watching Sekirei and since then has the perception that animes are full of boobies and pornographic materials

My dad meanwhile, thinks that majority of the animes out there are like Crayon shin-chan and doraemon. I dont really care about his opinion cause he is the only one in the house that permits me to watch anime.

I believe my parents know, especially when I started buying the dvds but I'm sure they still categorize it all as 'cartoons.'

Of course you have some who just won't bite. Others had a bad run in for a first impression (I don't expect any parent to be into watching Sekirei with their kids, even if it is a guilty pleasure of mine).

It's understandable how parents wouldn't be into some anime like say Code Geass or Gurren Lagann or Eva....most otaku aimed shows aren't made for "normal people"

absolutely NOT trying to be derogotory here, but it's essentially the same as hard sci-fi or superhero comics in america, they aren't made for converts, and frankly few anime is these days.

However there is some stuff like Bebop or Michiko and Hatchin or Planetes that if shown at the right time could so someone that it's not just boobs, power blasts and pokemon.

My parents are currently very worried about the state I am in now, and my mother forbids me to watch Zero No Tsukaima S3 when it is aired here due to its content (I am extremely proud of Kugi and her tsunlolis).

They already noticed how frequently I change my wallpaper on my computer and how it usually have lolis instead of the normal fap-material guys around my age (early 20s) would want. (the only fap-material kind of characters I can think of which I like are the Fujibayashi twins from Clannad)

My mum constantly blames the computer for my poor grades when back then I was still in school, eccentric (overly random) character and useless knowledge* hoarded in my brain. I blame the society for its prejudice against the less socially inclined.

Anyway I think there are quite a few people here in AS who are married and have children, so I think it is perfectly normal on another side of the world to have parents like that, after all, it is how people are willing to accept different things, ideas and people that shapes the "societal norms".

* - Over here, any knowledge that DOES NOT improve your overall academic standing or gets you a distinction in exams is considered useless. One of such is how terrorist groups operate, and complicated "baseless" stuff like the String Theory.

Harsh, but that's the way it goes. But hey remember how much they hated rock and roll back in the day?

I have a problem with anything loli related personally, but really as long you don't turn into a pedo and you are able to live a normal life, unless you come from a VERY CONSERVATIVE CULTURE, I don't think your parents will revoke you or anything.

As long as the parent don't catch you watching or reading a hentai level thing I think most parents would be fine with it.

My dad is a very compentent business man and a very respected person but he still likes anime. He has over 100 GB worth of anime that I know of. Age doesn't always matter in having fun.

My parents have never had a problem with it. My dad might have had a low opinion of it when DBZ was around (Well, one could argue that it's kind of understandable) but he's not the kind of guy to judge an entire genre on one show. My mom also enjoys watching anime with me and my 24 year old brother. They're very open-minded. They also respect my privacy very much, so I don't feel suspicious watching it while they're in the house.
Both my brother and my sister introduce me to new anime all the time. My sister (recently) introduced me to Higurashi, Haruhi Suzumiya, Princess Tutu... and before she even watched Death Note she showed it to me and I watched it.
My brother showed me S-Cry-Ed, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Code Geass, Bleach, Hellsing, Yu Yu Hakusho...

Mine really don't care, as long as it's not hentai. xD They've seen me watching a scene of TMOHS where Haruhi makes Mikuru "a little more sexy", and didn't care. xD

How you and your parents see anime and anime fans?

My Parents were angry when they found out I'm watching anime, and just like what some of you guys have experienced, they shouted at me and said that anime is an extremely bad thing, it would only make me weird and lower my academic performances. But I don't agree with and don't understand my parents because I have learned lots of life lessons from different anime series, on the other hand, my grades didn't get affected after I started watching anime.
So I want to know how you guys see anime and how your parents see anime and anime fans. Do your parent think anime is a good or bad? Do they think that anime fans are some weird people? How do you think your parents' wrong viewpoints can be changed?

I suggest taking a look at

https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=10913

and

https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=61527

where these issues have been discussed extensively. This topic comes up on MAL a lot, too.

My parents don't really care what I watch... except they call my cosplayer friends "anime". When we're doing photoshoots at the garden.. they would say things like... oh the "anime" visited you again.

My parents know I watch anime. My father went to see Kimi no Na wa with me in theatres and we are watching Yamato 2199 together. My parents watch Studio Ghibli films and my father buys me anime from Amazon. He also sends me emails about new animes.
