It's possible that everyone ran away after she used her powers. Her family probably left that city (After all, they are related to Shiika, so other people might think "oh no, they might be monsters too, since they gave birth to one"). Shiika's sister was probably dragged away by force, since unlike her parents, she didn't treat Shiika like a monster.

Question: After looking at the Mushi-Uta website, I found some terms that interested me. Since I've never read the novel, can someone translate (or explain, if you know what it is) what these terms mean:

虫憑き
始まりの三匹
欠落者
特別環境保全事務局
むしばね

Also, people that wear those black goggles are in the same organization as Kakkou, right? (and it makes them look pretty evil...).

I can't help but say, from looking at the character portraits, that most "mushi" users look evil like:

Mushi-uta is probably a good example of misjudging a series by its cover. Before the series aired, I thought "bugs? People wearing goggles with weapons? It's probably just another action shounen title!" Then I watched the first episode, and thought "this feels different.". After I watched the second episode, "no action?! (except for that one scene). Are they going to take pacing seriously? This series is different, I must check out more!"

For a 12 episode series, I think, Mushi-uta will be nicely paced judging from just the first two episodes. I'm also thinking Mushi-uta might get slightly psychological. I certainly didn't expect this from Mushi-uta, but I am glad I didn't give up on this series. ^^v

I'll try to not say too much, so as not to spoil anything. Though I can't really say that much as I haven't actually read the novels either.

虫憑き (Mushi-tsuki)
People who have been possessed by a Mushi.

始まりの三匹 (Hajimari no Sanbiki)
Literally "the first three". These are 3 Mushi I think.

欠落者 (Ketsurakusha)
Mushi-tsuki who have lost their Mushi.

特別環境保全事務局 (Tokubetsu Kankyou Hozen Jimukyoku)
The Special Environment Preservation Department. Tokkan for short. They're the ones who aim to control the Mushi.

むしばね (Mushi-bane)
They are the resistance against the Tokkan.

In the novel, They survived, but her father and mother is afraid of her, because they know what she is, her sister doesn't and thought she ran away, so when she appeared in front of them again to thank them for taking care of her, but she left them again.

Also, what was her sister's reaction to when Shiika reappeared in front of her? (was it like surprise, relief, etc.)

Yes, no one know what they are, just they appeared 10+ year ago, some theory that Mushi are bio experiment other are natural phenomon...no one knows yet., Tokkan are split into two group over them.
Group 1. Central side want to leave them alone so they can create more Mushi so that Central Tokkan can study Mushi
Group 2. Kako's want to destroy them completely, and he has supporter, and being the strongest Mushi-tsuki, the Central Tokkan doesn't interfere with him...yet.

The google is their form of communication, protection, and recorder so they can be held accountable for their action.
Also the goggle covering the face protect their identity, since mushi is still feared and not known as existed.

Spoiler for the manga:

Kako look so much better in the manga and anime, and I'm slightly disapointed that they spoiled Kako's identity so early, since it wasn't shown till the final battle in vol.1

That woman (secretary-like girl with the evil lookiing man (Haji?)......

The "resistance":
That Rina making such a absurd promise
The boring people in there (look! A mosquito!)
THOSE FUNNY LOOKING MASKS! (I can't help but laugh every time I see it...)

Well, Shiika gets her bug back, a little girl suffers a horrible fate, that twin-tailed girl stalks, the resistance acts stupid.

Overall so far, I like the show. It's not bad, just some odd points here and there.

okey the plot is somewhat cloudy...i cant even begin to fully understand what happens without any subs (and where the hell are they? ) ~ but sadness...yea i got that part down ~ so the bug user dies when their bug dies...but why didnt the goggle guy kill the resistance guy whos bug wont listen to him? O.O

The bug user doesn't die but sort of losses their individuality and ability to do things of their own free will. It was discussed earlier in the thread.
