REC's Aka was quite a nice girl (woman, she's 20.), and it's a good series to boot. I don't think any characters in Kanon or Clannad are annoying, either, except very, very, arguably Fuko. (But I didn't think she was). Given, they're not really romances, but I guess they are moreso than Shugo Chara or Full Metal Panic!, probably on the same level of romanticism as Fruits Basket. And Zero no Tsukaima's Louise isn't irritating at all. [/joke] Nothing else pops up, though I'll probably think of more later. |

I second REC, because that's a nice anime. Well, this comes purely down to opinion of course, but I think that most of the girls in Clannad is not annoying, although romance is a backdrop until the latter half of the series. If you don't mind it, Koi Kaze also has a female lead that really cannot be annoying. Er, there's not a lot of anime without a girl that someone said at some point is annoying, so I'll end this post with The Place Promised in Our Early Days.

Kamichu - wonderful slice-of-life about an average girl with an average crush who happen to be the local goddess in the area of Japan that she lives (this series is somewhat like youe aforementioned Kamichama Karin, but significantly more down to earth). The lead girl is very shy and diffident in her romance, but the show is very sweet and cute, there are some wonderfully sentimental moments spread throughout this 16 episode series.
Some Studio Ghibli titles: I Can Hear the Sea/The Ocean Waves - An anime movie about three high school students (one girl and two boys) that struggle with their relationship and school. Very low-key and very charming. Only Yesterday - a wonderful adult drama about a 27 year old woman nostalgically reflecting on her childhood and her first love, while struggling with her current career and lovelife. Whisper of the Heart - a story of two artistic middle school students who struggle with expressing themselves (one as a writer, the other as a violin crafter) all the while slowly falling in love with each other. |

Full Metal Panic definitely Chidori is one of the coolest female characters ever
I also second the rec for Perfect Girl Evolution aka Wallflower. Sunako rules and, well, there is Slayers, though I wouldn't exactly call the heroine's relationship with her guy 'romance' - way too understated. but she's one cool girl |

You might find the romance in Toshokan Sensou to your taste. Both main female characters are quite charming in very different ways, and there really aren't any polygons either.

Eureka 7 - the 2 girls you ever really see are Eureka (Kind of shy, not annoying whatsoever and Talho is the epitome of "cool" and you even get to see her romantic side near the end as well. a great anime no doubt.
Nodame Cantabile Story of a "wanna-be" conductor who excels in playing Piano, Chiaki is followed by Nodame, who although despite her carefree attitude, really cares of Chiaki, who represents everything she is not, but wants to be. Anime style may be awkward at first, but i found it to grow on me very quickly. Bokura Ga ita - Very much a "Love only me" type of anime. Nana quickly falls for Yano, and at first her love is one sided. Quickly she grows on Yano, and the two become a couple. but Yano is a guy with a bad past. So you always see yourself cheering for Nana, who is easily a lovable character. these are just 3 i thought of Randomly, but all there are a "must-see" anime Last edited by Phlaw; 2008-06-25 at 15:03. I hesitated on recommending Nodame Cantabile because Nodame can be, well, "annoying" , but she doesn't get in anyone's way (except perhaps for Saiko), so I guess it meets the OP's request.

Narue no Sekai, one of my favourite romances. Main characters get it together in the first ep and keep it together, the show focuses on their actual relationship growth rather than the actual getting together, and has a nice little touch of sci-fi too Also, the male lead isn't an indecisive idiot like 99% of other male leads in any kind of romance or harem show, this alone is enough reason to watch it imo
