Yeah but they are so scared of Akki anyway....neutered they may be but they seem violent enough when they get down to it. You'd think they would have created countermeasures against an Akki outbreak
Minefield has use alright. Properly saturated ground with clear paths that can be targeted by overlapping indirect fire fields. If the gunners just know they are shooting a "target of extreme threat" it's less humanized than seeing the actual Akki. Long range gunnery doesn't actually involve the target to be perceived. Sure it won't do very much good if the Akki comes from within your society but say it comes from an outside settlement?

They're not violent against other humans. They even have a built-in block on human-on-human aggression plus the block against killing their own kind. This is why akki and gouma (but especially akki) are a problem. Most people don't have the mental fortitude to sacrifice themselves.
As for minefields, I don't know, it's not like having a secret minefield is possible? I mean, as deadly as akki are, they're a relatively rare occurrence so you'd have to have a "danger zone" that is unused for perhaps hundreds of years. Either you condition people with "don't go there or you'll die for sure" and then nobody will go there, including akki, or you just tell people "don't go there because it's dangerous for vague reasons I'm not telling you" and then you bet people will still escape there when their lives are in danger and they'll die. (To say nothing of kids with mostly untampered minds like Group 1 who would go there despite all warnings because they're curious. And then they'd die.) As for indirect fire you still need guns (possibly unused for centuries...) and a target, you can't just go and shoot in all directions and hope to hit the akki... what if you don't? And what if the akki realizes what's going on and reflects the bullets? And when you have people escaping in all directions, who guarantees that the gunners hit the akki and not some poor devils running for their lives? And despite what the anime may have the viewers believe, akki don't run around with black miasma covering them so to a gunner's eye they're pretty much human. Nah, guns are still way too direct, even like that. But then, this topic will come up soon enough. Last edited by kuromitsu; 2013-02-18 at 10:09. |
