(CR) Active Raid: Mobile Assault Division, Unit 8 Anticipation

The November issue of Kadokawa's Newtype magazine is revealing on Saturday that Goro Taniguchi (Planetes, Code Geass, Maria the Virgin Witch) will serve as chief director on a new original television anime titled Active Raid -Kidō Kyōshūshitsu Dai-Hakkei- (Active Raid: Mobile Assault Division, Unit 8). The anime is slated for a January 2016 premiere on Tokyo MX and other channels.

Plot Summary:

Set in a part of Tokyo that has descended into a quagmire, the story follows Unit 8 of the 5th Special Public Security Section's 3rd Mobile Assault Division — popularly called "The Eighth" — who don powered armor "Willware" exoskeletons to counter the rise in crime.

Interesting. Just saw this on ANN. An original TV anime coming for Winter 2016 by director of Code Geass.

Need more info on it. So far as a "police" mecha series (as the summary suggests) it could either go the way of Patlabor or Metal Jack. Seriously hoping it goes the Patlabor route.

Patlabor movies or Patlabor series? Coz the latter is pretty much just a slice-of-life comedy at its core (with some satire & occasional robot action ). Not that I don’t like it, but I think today’s audience will be super-bored if the show is executed like Patlabor series.

Anyway, now I really have to question why the “8” number is pretty popular in mecha series? Before this, we already have Gundam: 08th MS Team then the protagonist team in Argevollen is also called Squad 8, and now we have another 8th team (I’m sure there are other 8 teams I forgot to mention). Is “8” a lucky number in Japan or something?

After making a research of it, I'd say yes, time to quote something from Wiki:

The Japanese thought eight (や ya) as a holy number in the ancient times. The reason is less well understood, but it is thought that it is related to the fact they used eight to express large numbers vaguely such as manyfold (やえはたえ Yae Hatae) (literally, eightfold and twentyfold), many clouds (やくも Yakumo) (literally, eight clouds), millions and millions of Gods (やおよろずのかみ Yaoyorozu no Kami) (literally, eight millions of Gods), etc. It is also guessed that the ancient Japanese gave importance to pairs, so some researchers guess twice as four (よ yo), which is also guessed to be a holy number in those times because it indicates the world (north, south, east, and west) might be considered a very holy number.

I'm reminded of Gundam 08th MS Team, but that summary's like something out of GITS or Psycho-Pass. I'd give Goro Taniguchi a chance ever since I saw Geass last year, and Tosh is one hell of a artist.

I happen to like both series, but it's probably not going to be like either of them. Nothing suggests any point of comparison.

People should try to take a step back and look at what kind of show matches the synopsis before jumping to conclusions.

That said, this is all far too early. We don't have enough information right now.

Low budget nature of their shows aside, I can actually enjoy pretty much anything regardless of the studio and this is the first time they're making an anime original. Let's hope the production values won't look nearly as bothersome, preferably in Castle Town Dandelion's animation style rather than the other way around.

Well, Orange is one of the best in 3DCG technique though (they're the ones behind Majestic Prince IIRC). So, if nothing else, the 3DCG should be good at the very least .

I love Dandelion but IMS is simply shit studio full of lazy fucks who can't maintain schedule thus even JnD had some occasional QUALITY.
