Really happy to see this show back.
It's so easy to get into this anime again even after being on a half year break. Seeing the characters, shogi creativity, and humor again...ah, Fall is going to be fun.

Lot of Kawamoto sisters in the OP and no Kyoko. This pleases me.
The show picked up right where it left off. It was nice to see Rei being so excited about his new club activities, to the point he couldn't wait to share what happened with the sisters.

Those words were echoed verbatim while his words before and after have changed a little with the context. Sense of place in the world clearly encapsulated in the sentiments expressed but with a different stance on that foundation - with a little more time passed, flowing with the water under the bridge getting into the small town alongside the big river. This first episode, to me, a little hyper, manic even, as though the animators had joined their characters and were on a bit of a sugar rush themselves... Immediately fully immersed despite images of skipping over the surface. Given the nature of the story, we're bound to descend a little further.

The episode does remind us of several stuff from the last few episodes of the first season. We revisit the frustrating feeling of loss after Mr. Shimada's defeat against the current shogi champion, and the rediscovery of life outside of the shogi table with the Shogi Science Club doing their first club activity as a re-established club. There's also some developments with Rei himself. Although he's still a bit gloomy, we see him in a bit more vibrant color, and he now looks forward to telling more stories and sharing his feelings with the Kawamoto sisters.
I still like how the OP continues to reflect the colors surrounding Rei throughout the progress of the story. In sharp contrast, the current ED is both colorful and bleak, still fitting of Rei's ongoing internal turmoil. Never realized that both Sangatsu and Kekkai Sensen would air at the same day. Talk about a loaded weekend!

I thought ramune came in a bottle with a little ball inside. If you dissolve the candies in soda water, do you get that form of ramune?
I watched the first season straight through some months ago, so I re-watched the last five episodes or so to bring myself back up to speed. When I got to this episode it felt seamless. Other than Rei telling newcomers he's a professional shougi player at the beginning, this episode could have been part of last season.

By the way, I noticed that this episode is less Bakemonogatari and more Koufuku Graffiti.
I guess the reason why SHAFT picked up Koufuku is to learn how to depict scenes less stylistically, and this is the result.

I'm just still hoping they make it to Hina's entrance into high school, bring things to a conclusion at a point of new beginnings. Not sure it that'll happen but fingers crossed.
First episode was nice, getting to see Rei actually growing socially a bit, not just having a club but actively participating in it, and not just as a shogi teacher but also a science student of sorts. My friend was shocked to see Souya just filling his tea with pure glucose like that, said it was like instant diabetes. Makes me wonder whether flooding the body with that much glucose at once really is a bad idea. Especially if he goes through it as fast as he apparently does. But seriously, why's this still in "upcoming"? |
