In the Movie, is he Ranka's brother?? Was this detail omitted or changed? I should re-watch TFS, because I don't remember them interacting at all (he does follow her around?).

アルトが交戦してきたブレラを説得。
最後にはブレラが感情を取り戻し、自らインプラントを引っこ抜く。
解放されたブレラが女王の核まで突撃し、それを打ち抜き破壊。

Alto is persuading Brera that they are not enemies... In the end, Brera gets back his feelings (back in control, so he was brainwashed like in the series?), and unplugs the implants [??]. Brera, who is now free, attacks the Queen.

I haven't found anything about Brera being Ranka's brother... And I don't think they interacted in the first movie, or at least they never confronted each other. Brera follows Sheryl around, and from Grace's shower scene, it is confirmed that Ranka is Code Q1.

ギャラクシー側の思惑や、人工的にその思惑の為にバジュラをコントロールする為に
育ったという存在意義も判明、天然で可能な特別な人間を見つけるまでの繋ぎだった。
使い捨てでもういらないと計画通りに切り捨てようとする、グレイスと脳内会議するギャラクシー の面々
しかし親心が芽生えていたグレイスは、記憶も曖昧なランカは不安要素を持つ
内蔵を移植し、訓練されたシェリルを利用すべきだと説得する。
歌を捨てるか、歌って死ぬか、ランカの内蔵を移植して成り代わるかと問うグレイス
歌って死ぬと一度は豪語するが、大事なあの人に会えなくなるのだと言われ揺らぐ想い。

揺れる中、ギャラクシーの企みに気付いたキノコ側によって一網打尽
自身も刑務所に入れられ、囚人服を着せられて死刑が決まり、イツワリノウタヒメだったと判明す る。
独房で、弱りながらも歌を捨てられずに吐いた血で死を待ちながらも詩を壁に綴る
そんな中、救いに来たのは大事なあの人、刑務所からの逃走の中
洗脳中のブレラが襲撃、ランカを殺し内蔵をシェリルに移植する作戦を達成する為に。
拒否するシェリル、現れたオズマの奮戦も虚しく、爆発に巻き込まれてランカとシェリルは宇宙の 海へ
必死に手を伸ばすアルトだが、その手は届かず。しかしシェリルは自らを犠牲にし
ランカをアルトの方へと押し出し、オズマと共に宇宙の海へ・・。
（ちなみにこの直後に少し落ち着いて決戦へ向かう時、ランカさんはアルトにこの衣装どう？私アルト君の事が 好きなの！と告白）

決戦が開始されるが、キノコ達のクオーツコントロール兵器で支配されたヴァジュラに苦戦
ランカの歌も兵器の前では思うように効いてくれない。
そんな中、兵器を破壊すれば歌が届く事に気付いたアルト。そして同時に
アイくんによって助けられたシェリルは、朽ち果てかけたグレイスに歌えと言われ
これ以上の歌は死を意味する事を覚悟しつつ、魂の叫びを歌に乗せる
（アカペラの鬼気迫るノーザンクロス）

イヤリング（クオーツ）によりアルトの耳にも届く。生存を知り喜ぶアルト
クオーターに運ばれ、ランカと共に操られたヴァジュラをコントロールする為にひたすら歌う
戦いの結末を待っていたのは、イヤリングを通じての大事な人からの愛の告白と別れ
アルトがデフォールドされていくのを見つめ、叫ぶシェリル
そしてシェリルも力尽きる。
一月が経過しても未だに目が覚めないシェリル（耳にはイヤリング）
エンドロールのラストで口が動き何かを呟く、その言葉はイヤリングを通して、アルトの声が届い たのか

はっきりいって、ランカ何もしてないよ？
天然でヴァジュラと共鳴できる存在という事だけしか。

ちなみに、俺は勿論シェリル好きだけど
長文バレは一切、脚色していない。
サヨナラノツバサのストーリーはこの通りだ。
最後のシェリルの口が動いたとこについては、俺の想像だし
人それぞれ、色々な形を想像すると思うけどね。
帰ってきて目が覚める、シンデレラシーンは見たいといえば見たいが
ファンがこうやって、各々の中で想像していく形も一つの形じゃないかな。
その為に、デフォールドで爆死させなかったし
シェリルの口も動かして、想像させる余地と描写したんだろうからね

No, that scene's explicitly labelled as occuring in an alternate universe that was changed by the OVA finale.

Aquarion OVA had an ending that was sorta lacking in closure, but all evidence indicates it's a pretty happy one so it shouldn't be included in any list of bittersweet Kawamori endings.

そしていつか私も銀河を震わしてみせるから！と言った過去をを思いだし

Dream of Sheryl. She went to see Alto's kabuki performance and gave him a bouquet of flowers backstage.
Then, Sheryl tells him that someday she too will become famous in Galaxy. (みせるから = she will show him that she can, that kind of tone...)
Alto remembers the past!

お前あの時の・・・！
やっと思い出したの？
Alto: You, from that time...!
Sheryl: You finally remembered?

で、何故か泣きそうになった。
アルトが空を飛びたい理由はシェリルの言葉だったんだなーって。
お互いがお互いを向上させてたんだなぁーってね。

Alto's reason for wanting to fly in the sky were Sheryl's words.

I wouldn't call them childhood friends exactly. That was probably there only meeting and since it happened when they were little, Alto forgot about it until now. Considering Sheryl's personality, I view it as her telling Alto, someone who was already famous (and perhaps she was mesmerized by his acting abilities too?), that she was also going to become a star. Something like that... That's just my opinion. ^^;

I think Alto's the main character, hence why his name is consistently on top of the credits in the tv series. Both Ranka and Sheryl were the lead female characters. Just because Ranka had more connection to the plot, doesn't make her the main character (were Mao, Minmay, etc the main characters? Nope, yet the plot is resolved by them). In case of Misa and Minmay, Kawamori said one was the heroine (Misa) and the other was the star (Minmay).

IMO, Ranka was marketed as clearly as the star with the initial merchandise, not the heroine. However... Sheryl's popularity (and May'n) was progressively overshadowing her. Which left quite a gap.

How does one measure the importance? A lot of ways. Maybe we should go to the good old, rolling credits, shall we?

In all episodes, Alto is on top. But which lady is below him?

Ranka: 2, 4, 10-13, 16-17, 19, 21 episodes. Ten episodes total.

Vs

Sheryl Nome: 1 (both Close Encounter and Deculture version), 3, 5- 9, 14-15, 18, 20, 22-25 episodes. Fifteen episodes total.

As you can see... Sheryl's importance didn't come out of nowhere (she was credited over Ranka since the first episode), her Marketing appeal was increased.

Just like Movie Ranka was changed to be more independent and with a sturdier backbone, Movie Sheryl was changed to connect her more with the plot. It's not just Sheryl, but the Nome/Zero connection which was a HUGE plothole in the tv series, IMO. Both of them retconned their meetings with Alto.

Anyway, I think the three of them were of equal importance/measure in different ways.

So, about the ending. You can solve it with a quick fix fic. It's up to us if

It is kind of suspicious the guy both like looks more feminine than they do and has gender identification issues, hmm? Not to mention Sheryl/Sheryl scenes, they arouse Ranka in the first movie.

Anyway, I've always liked it since the TV series because basically... Sheryl, not Alto, saved Ranka (he only went along with it because Sheryl asked). Ranka, not Alto, saved Sheryl. And there was that hug in the end... Ranka seemed to snuggle Sheryl's bust (while Alto was busy flying).
