Also, can I just say that I hate all of you people for giving me ideas?! I wasn't actually going to have any Al-Hazardi appear in this story, but then people started talking about it, and now I can't get the idea out of my head! I keep picturing them as having all kinds of crazy, geometrically insane screen-filling magic like has been showing up in the latest chapters of Negima and I can't stop! The problem is that my vision of Al-Hazard is... well, not really suited for anything but the villainous role, and they would probably need their own story to really do it justice. I was planning a sequel anyhow, but now I might have to make it a trilogy...

Heh... well, it's because Al Hazard is very relevant to their backstory, and to establish that they are not the same civilization as Al Hazard. I wasn't actually going to DO anything with Al Hazard until people started talking about them and making me think of what Al Hazardian uber-magic might actually look like. Putting visions of reality-warping devices and multi-layered omni-directional fractal barriers that I'll have incredibly hard times describing into my head.

That would be relevant eventually as the series goes on, but not in the current story. Thank you, though.

The sun was setting on another warm summer day. Today had been a great day at school, our normal teacher had been ill and we’d had an amazing substitute, a blue-haired woman with red eyes who looked oddly familiar and had… strange methods of teaching us.

I took my time walking home, enjoying the sunlight and the breeze. When I did get home it was almost dark so there wasn’t much time before I had to go to bed, just enough for dinner and desert – a delicious home made ice cream.

I said goodnight to Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama - who was on leave from work - and went upstairs to bed. The clock on the wall opposite my bed said that it was nine O’clock pm.

I couldn’t sleep, I lay awake looking at the ceiling as the clock ticked. As time wore on I finally began to doze off, fatigue overriding everything else in my body and numbing my brain.

A cloud passed over the moon; it’s shadow blanketing my room in absolute darkness.

That was the first time I heard it, faint as the wind, at the upper edge of hearing, piercing and hollow.

Laughter, shrieking, hysterical, laughter echoing through the night, I huddled up in my bed and drew the covers up to my chin. I strained my ears to catch the sound again…nothing.

Maybe I was simply hearing things, I was tired after all. There was a small sound outside my room, the creaking of floorboards perhaps? Yes floorboards, nothing else makes that same soft creaking noise.

All this ran through my head in the time it took my door to open a crack.

“Vivio, Fate-mama and I are going to bed now, good night, we’ll see you in the morning.” she smiled at he her face illuminated by the moonlight streaming in through the thin curtains.

“Yeah….’night mama” so what if my voice was shaking a little, I was still scared.

“Is something wrong, Vivio?”

“No, I’m just tired mama, I’ll see you in the morning.” I rolled over in my bed to face the window and closed my eyes, trying in vain once again to sleep. After exhausting every method I knew to entice sleep I gave up and settled down to wait for dawn.

It came again, louder this time but still hovering at the very upper end of what I could hear, that same haunting, discordant melody of laughter. I couldn’t make out where it was coming from; it couldn’t be coming from inside the house because there was no one here besides my mamas and me. Maybe someone in the neighbourhood was having a party and the laughter was distorted by distance.

That wasn’t right though, it couldn’t be. I had never heard anyone laugh like that before; there was no way that came from a human throat.

That didn’t leave me with any other option except the previously mentioned overactive imagination. There could be no other explanation, after all big kids don’t believe in ghosts.

All my efforts to reassure myself were rendered useless when the strange laughter echoed through my room again. Once more it was louder, I knew where it was coming from this time and I was afraid, the noise was outside the window.

Shaking with fear I walked slowly over to my windows, the silhouette of something was visible beyond the curtains. Swallowing I took hold of the curtains, one with each hand and pulled them apart.

I looked out at the night sky, the moon and the stars. Whatever it was, it was gone now.
I turned back to my bed, lay back down and turned to face the open window.

I froze; there was something there, something person shaped but shrouded in shadow, even while standing in moonlight.

I tried to work moisture back into my suddenly dry mouth to no avail. As the figure in the night turned towards me it was illuminated. It had no eyes in its pasty white face and rivets of bright blood dyed black in the moonlight tricked down to fall in streams to the ground below, its thin lips curved in a twisted mockery of a mirthless smile.

It turned its bloodless face to the sky and opened its mouth, letting out that same hideous laugh, the same high, haunted laugh. Even though it had no eyes I could swear it was looking right at when it lowered its head.

No sooner had the echoing of its laugh faded than dozens more of the creatures began to materialise outside of the window, half the size of the original – like its monstrous children.

I backed myself into the wall unable to cry out, my chest frozen by their eyeless stare. They began to move towards me, they passed through the window as if it didn’t even exist. They drifted across my room towards me, gliding like spectres.

The tallest of the group stopped in front of me, still I couldn’t cry out, I couldn’t do anything as it reached out for me.

Its head bent down, its blood soaked face an inch away from mine. Its hands like black ice as they encircled my head. Its mouth opened a endless abyss of blackness and I screamed.

Three in a row, maybe I'm going too far.

This was inspired by that fic by AtomicoX plus several memories and experiences from my childhood. You may not find it scary now, but it terrified me when I was five.

Personally i write what happens directly before, then what comes directly after. After that i do my best to work in what it was that i wanted to at first now i have a definite scenario and frame.

For me, I just walk away from the story and work on something else until the block fades. If that doesn't work, sometimes I try my hand at writing some scenes that take place in the future, to try and get my flow back and see if it sparks anything.

I force it. I at least open up the document each day and leave it open, occasionally flipping to it and writing a little, even if it's just a line. Sometimes something sparks. Or I write a very basic bland scene of "he said, she said, he did this, she did that." Getting something down on the page is priority, because it's easier to change and edit something once you have something there, then come up with brilliance on the first pass.

Stare at a blank page, and your mind will go blank.

Personally? I typically like to get out some show or story or manga that reminds me of the scene I'm trying to write and watching/reading a bit of it, to see if it shakes loose anything.

Beyond that... procrastinate. I procrastinate a lot.

I do what Kaijo does, yeah. Work on it every day, and sometimes you get a good string of clever lines, good wordplay, and so forth.

Sometimes you don't, but that's no reason to get discouraged.

From her spot on the command deck, Yami saw the explosions behind the multi-coloured barrier before it flickered and vanished. ‘As expected of the Starlight Destroyer…’

Speaking of Seikou, she received a quick telepathic call from the Nanoha replica. “Mission accomplished. Also-”

“Good work. I’ll prepare the docking area right away.” Material-D activated the switch to open the external doors and allow her companions to enter the ship safely. Once she confirmed that the ship had safely retrieved the trio, she restored life support to the area and restored pressure levels to normal.

…… wait a second. A trio? “Can someone explain why I’m detecting three life signs down there?”

“It would probably be better if you came down yourself and spoke to Material-L on this. She has apparently acquired a ‘sidekick’.”

“I’ll be there in a bit.” The Hayate replica closed the telepathic connection and got up from her chair just in time to run into Yuuno who nearly dropped the small stack of papers he had in his hand.

“Sorry!” The Librarian quickly passed by the Lord of Darkness and took a seat before his fingers flew across the navigation control to enter in a new flight plan.

“Just what has gotten you so excited, peasant?” asked Yami in a tone that was a mixture of curiosity and irritation.

“I finally figured it out! I know how to compensate for the natural warp in the space time fabric that you and the others create by being near each other!” He was going back and forth between his notes and the work console.

“Ah, yes… I believe that Material-S had brought that to my attention earlier…” She paused for a moment, wondering if this would be a good time to talk about what she did to him but upon seeing him hard at work, Yami decided to leave it be for now. There would be another opportunity later. “Well then, I’ll leave you to your work.”

As she slipped out, she felt Yersinia Kreuz connect with her mind. So it appears the spell is holding quite nicely. It looks like he’s now ready to be molded into the ideal servant.

‘Hmph…’

What’s with that attitude? Did I do something to annoy you?

‘I’m not annoyed at you. I’m annoyed at myself for not achieving what I wanted.’ Yami paused in her walk to the docking area where the others should be. ‘My natural charisma wasn’t enough to make him see the value of becoming my subject. In the end, I had to resort to using a spell to set his mind free. I cannot take any true satisfaction in this.’

It wasn’t like we had a choice. He perfectly understood what needed to be done and yet he still refused due to his beliefs about mutual feelings and that other gibberish.

‘In a sense, I find that an admirable quality. To hold on to his loyalties and principles to the end, even if that loyalty was misplaced to begin with-’ Material-D paused as she felt an odd throbbing in her head. ‘Ungh…… blasted migraine.’

Blame it on your friend for bringing this troublesome point up. What’s done is done so what’s the point of revisiting this foolishness?

She shook the headache off before resuming her walk. ‘You…… have a point. But at the very least, I should see him privately. Determine what has to be done and if her point of making amends is valid.’

The Tome merely grumbled in response. How utterly troublesome…

“Ooff!” It was the only sound Touma made as he ended up with his back on the ground thanks to that reversal throw that Einhart pulled off. “Ugh… if you don’t mind, can we take five?”

“Very well.”

“Thanks.” He rolled over and managed to get his hands and knees against the surface to rise from the ground. It took a bit longer than expected since he was also trying to catch his breath.

As for his companion, she carefully observed him with a critical eye. ‘Hm… if I continue his physical conditioning at this rate, agility and coordination should increase by 5% in a week. Speed and physical strength will probably rise by 6% and his muscular development should benefit as a result. He should be well on his way to obtaining the optimal body mass index just like my ancestor Claus.’

“And… up we go…!” grunted Touma under his breath.

‘Yes, the optimal body mass index. Perfect pectorals, perfect posterior-’ All train of thought came to a screeching halt in Einhart’s mind. ‘WHAT AM I THINKING?!’

After finally getting back to his feet, the boy noticed his friend’s face that was turning redder by the second. “Uh… you okay?”

“Okay, break time’s over! Let’s go!” Yes, sparring with the boy should help her keep these hormone driven thoughts out of her brain.

“Aw, geez. Already?” And he thought Nove-sensei was a harsh trainer…

Yuuno finally finished inputting in the flight path into the navigational control. Now that he has calculated the compensating factor, even if the Materials warp the space time fabric, the ship will still end up only a light distance away from Mid-Childa. As it was suggested by his research to activate the course lock-in module to prevent other flight deviations, he took the time to find the function on the X-3’s drive and activate it.

‘Everything’s all set! Course set… and engage!’ Once he tapped the last key and felt the ship move back into dimensional space, he let out a happy sigh. This time, he will make it home for sure! The others should be pleased to hear this as well…

And speaking of the girls, they were squabbling rather loudly in the hall. Best to do something about that. The minute he got up from his seat and opened the door, he felt someone tackle him to the ground.

“Does she hafta go back, Yuu-nii? She gave me those sad, sad puppy doggy eyes! I had to take her with me!” wailed Material-L who had deactivated her barrier jacket and was straddling him in that tight purple leather outfit of hers.

“Wait… what? Can someone explain what’s going on?” groaned Yuuno as he tried to get his bearings.

“She did not look at you with ‘sad, sad puppy doggy eyes’ as you put it so crudely,” came the sharp tone of Material-D from behind.

“You took her because you wanted a sidekick for your magical girl adventures,” said Material-S in her usual monotone before hearing a rustling sound and stepping aside.

A quick glance showed that the noise came from the tall woman who just emerged from one of the spare quarters. She had pink hair and was dressed in some spare clothes that had probably belonged to one of the previous occupants. It consisted of a simple blue dress shirt, a pair of jeans and black boots.

“Um… who are you and where did you come from?” asked the bewildered Librarian.

“My designation is Sette. I originated from Cell #4316 of the 'Lubsoulim' Orbit Prison’s 6th branch on Uninhabited World 17,” said the pink haired woman in a neutral tone that sounded a lot like Seikou’s.

“………would you please leave me alone for a moment? I want to engage in a meditation technique passed down through my clan for centuries.”

“What is it called, Yuu-nii?” asked Rai in a curious tone.

“Screaming.”

“I’ll be there in a bit.” The Hayate replica closed the telepathic connection and got up from her chair just in time to run into Yuuno who nearly dropped the small stack of papers he had in his hand.

“Sorry!” The Librarian quickly passed by the Lord of Darkness and took a seat before his fingers flew across the navigation control to enter in a new flight plan.

“Just what has gotten you so excited, peasant?” asked Yami in a tone that was a mixture of curiosity and irritation.

“I finally figured it out! I know how to compensate for the natural warp in the space time fabric that you and the others create by being near each other!” He was going back and forth between his notes and the work console.

“Ah, yes… I believe that Material-S had brought that to my attention earlier…” She paused for a moment, wondering if this would be a good time to talk about what she did to him but upon seeing him hard at work, Yami decided to leave it be for now. There would be another opportunity later. “Well then, I’ll leave you to your work.”

As she slipped out, she felt Yersinia Kreuz connect with her mind. So it appears the spell is holding quite nicely. It looks like he’s now ready to be molded into the ideal servant.

Yuuno finally finished inputting in the flight path into the navigational control. Now that he has calculated the compensating factor, even if the Materials warp the space time fabric, the ship will still end up only a light distance away from Mid-Childa. As it was suggested by his research to activate the course lock-in module to prevent other flight deviations, he took the time to find the function on the X-3’s drive and activate it.

‘Everything’s all set! Course set… and engage!’ Once he tapped the last key and felt the ship move back into dimensional space, he let out a happy sigh. This time, he will make it home for sure! The others should be pleased to hear this as well…

And speaking of the girls, they were squabbling rather loudly in the hall. Best to do something about that. The minute he got up from his seat and opened the door, he felt someone tackle him to the ground.

“Does she hafta go back, Yuu-nii? She gave me those sad, sad puppy doggy eyes! I had to take her with me!” wailed Material-L who had deactivated her barrier jacket and was straddling him in that tight purple leather outfit of hers.

“Wait… what? Can someone explain what’s going on?” groaned Yuuno as he tried to get his bearings.

“She did not look at you with ‘sad, sad puppy doggy eyes’ as you put it so crudely,” came the sharp tone of Material-D from behind.

“You took her because you wanted a sidekick for your magical girl adventures,” said Material-S in her usual monotone before hearing a rustling sound and stepping aside.

A quick glance showed that the noise came from the tall woman who just emerged from one of the spare quarters. She had pink hair and was dressed in some spare clothes that had probably belonged to one of the previous occupants. It consisted of a simple blue dress shirt, a pair of jeans and black boots.

“Um… who are you and where did you come from?” asked the bewildered Librarian.

“My designation is Sette. I originated from Cell #4316 of the 'Lubsoulim' Orbit Prison’s 6th branch on Uninhabited World 17,” said the pink haired woman in a neutral tone that sounded a lot like Seikou’s.

“………would you please leave me alone for a moment? I want to engage in a meditation technique passed down through my clan for centuries.”

“What is it called, Yuu-nii?” asked Rai in a curious tone.

“Screaming.”

Well, only Rai is to blame on that one. Yami had no idea what was hidden after all. I wonder how the TSAB will react to that. Will they think they played into the Materials's hand by moving away the more dangerous prisonners?
