The original English dub did start with that exactly - Mamoru/Darien being a college student and Usagi/Serena being in junior high. I was like..."What?!" But I still enjoyed the show back then as a kid...just trying to forget their age difference. It wasn't until I managed to stumble upon the manga later that I finally found out their real age (or rather Mamoru's real age). I have no idea why the English dub started with Darien being a college student instead of a 17-year old high school student.

So there are 26 episodes and the first episode covered chapter 1 of the manga. The first and second arcs of the manga each has 13 chapters and chapter 26 is the last chapter of the second arc. If it goes exactly one episode per chapter then episodes 1-13 will cover the first arc and episodes 14-26 will cover the second arc.

I . . . liked it. I'm surprised that I liked it. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either.
My major complaints are ones that many others before me have made many times before so I won't bore you all by rehashing them. Suffice to say that Usagi's voice actress clearly should have been recast (in my opinion) because her voice was damn near insufferable. Listening to her every other week will be a definite chore. And the CG transformation sequence was pretty pathetic. One of the great mysteries of this generation will be why Toei decided to go CG for such an important sequence. Hopefully they won't show it every episode. Other than those two things, I liked everything else. The backgrounds were beautiful, the character designs worked nicely, and the adaptation feels pretty faithful at the moment. Of course, some things have been changed (such as how Usagi met Luna for the first time) for unknown reasons. I personally feel that having Usagi rescue Luna says more about her character than just having her trip over her, but I suppose that in and of itself says volumes as well. I look forward to seeing where this adaptation goes in the future!

This is the way she meets Luna in the manga, and now they are following that root. In the manga Usagi really starts as an awful character for various reasons. In the first few chapters she is way goofier and unsupportable than her original anime counterpart. But it's done for a reason. She has a whole journey in front of her self. But in the manga she matures really quick and becomes a real heroine, which makes the idiotic character portrayal in the begging quite interesting, making her change far more noticeable. I hope they will be able to do that kind of characterization here as well. We will see

I do hope that they'll be able to pull off her shift from ditzy, self-centered young girl to mature, selfless young woman. I think they'll be able to. I think they're on the right track at least.

"They don't look like kids at all!" and then ep2 rolls around and we see them both became fine young men.

IMHO the first episode of this remake was all right. Lots of nostalgia. My only complaint is Kotono's voice. She should have never been recast, she is too old to play a 14-year-old girl convincingly.
I am surprised by the many negative reviews about the henshin sequence. Maybe because I am used to the Precure ending animations since Fresh Precure, but I don't think that the CGI is so terrible. And the sequence itself is exactly the same as the old one. I look forward to hearing Hisako Kanemoto's rendition of my favourite senshi, Ami-chan. I am a bit surprised by this casting because Kanemoto usually plays the silly girl (Ika Musume, Cure Peace), not the serious type. Let's see how she does.

Can I just take a minute to say how much I love the fact that so many people in this thread are well-versed regarding the Pretty Cure franchise? I know next-to-nothing about it so it's nice to have people who can compare/contrast a contemporary magical girl against a rebooted legacy magical girl show. It adds an interesting element to the discussions in this thread
And it kind of makes me a little bit interested in Pretty Cure myself

Fresh Precure was the first series to do animated 3d (3d has existed since the first Precure series, but it was generally limited to items and people that didn't move) and when you compare it to later series, Fresh Precure looks very dated in comparison. The fact that Sailor Moon's transformation was less well animated than Fresh (roughly 5 years old) should show clearly why it's a disappointing sequence. The main thing with the sequence is that they clearly had a single goal in mind, which was show to show off the camera work. For whatever reason, they decided to skimp on everything else, whether it's the sailor cape that flaps in a 4 fps movement, the simplistic shading on the model, the weird choice to accentuate the bulkier parts of her costume etc. They could animate everything just fine in the opening sequence, so it baffles me that they didn't do the same with the transformation sequence. |

Oh wow, I felt nostalgia hit me like a ton of bricks.
Though I have to ask, was I the only one looking at the episode's run time and waiting for ANY kind of modern convenience (like the now-ubiquitous cell phone/smart phone) to show up?

I actually like this old OP song with the current OP animation better than the new OP song. Just checked the manga again...sorry, I remembered that scene incorrectly. Thanks for clearing it up for me as well. It's been so long since I last looked at the SM manga.
