I'm getting really board with what I call the Asuka syndromme, you see an anime with a female character who by the end is just flat out useless, or becomes nothing more but a bench mark to show you how far your hero has progressed from being just terrible..

Any suggestions? Comedy, Action..whatever!

The Third is definitely up your alley. (The male lead is not a fighter to begin with ^^) - action/adventure/SciFi/minuscule amounts of romance

Soukou no Strain - SciFi/Action (mecha)

Blood+ - adventure/action/fantasy

Elfen LIed - most definitely not weak. BUt the show is very violent and touches upon some disturbing subjects, so i suggest satying away from it if you can't handle such things. Action/SciFi/drama/some romance

Junni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms) should be your number one choice; Youko travels the exact opposite path of development.

Shows with strong, older female protagonists:
Seirei no Moribito
Saiunkoku Monogatari
Hataraki Man
Monster
Black Lagoon

Shows with plucky girl protagonists:
Noein
Angelic Layer
Tweeny Witches

Nodame grows a lot in Nodame Cantabile, but it's about her personal development as a classical pianist.

Not only that, this anime (made in 1997) is already considered a 'classic' anime.. The anime is musical as well, and has lots of symbolisms.. n_n

Almost all characters have psychological problems here, quite a bit of dark themed, but there's hell of funny scenes kinda like Ranma if I were to compare.. More crazier than Ranma rather.

(There's a bit of Yaoi and Incest here, but nothing graphic, just implied)

Also, the girl is all princely and noble like.. Like it says in my avatar and signature..

Black Lagoon, nitty gritty women who packs a punch.
Mostly good old hollywood style action with a healthy popular blockbuster parodies, (terminator, desperado and etc.)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Shakugan no Shana, Atleast I think Shana is pretty non-useless.
