Howdy, I'm still kinda new to the Photoshop (and Adobe, for that matter) scene, so I've been wondering about something I've been seeing in popular videos and images for a while now:

When there's already an existing custom font in something like a game or an anime, how do people like subbers and video editors pull said font and design their own pieces of text that resemble it closely?

I realize the potential that it may just be grabbing the basic idea then stylizing an existing font around it (especially after reading this), but some people who make videos daily sometimes pull out this trick, and I'm wondering if there's some sort of idea behind it? Is there a way to determine which fonts work best, and what ways they have to be stylized?

In programs such as Illustrator, text can be converted into a shape and then modified.

Vector-izing? If you mean creating custom fonts through vectors it would be called custom vector typeset or vector fonts

As has been mentioned, vectorizing. Use Pen Tool in Illustrator to mimic the font and create whatever text you want. I'm sure there is an easier way, but that's as far as I know. I'm sure a veteran fansubber on the forums can provide assistance.

In some cases, you can also use a service such as http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ that works nicely if the font is something it can recognize. In this case it seems to be screwing up, though.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I'm planning on looking into Adobe's Creative Suite Master Collection for schooling and personal requirements, so I'll have access to Illustrator. Hopefully the concept can be laid out a little bit more by a subber, but thanks for now. :3
