Just checked the comments on the preview video again. Yukikaze who previously commented that he had a friend who worked with Studio Trigger left a few more spoilers. I don't know if they are true, but here is what he/she said:

My friend working in Trigger Studio as animator and he told me that the ending of this anime is pretty bad. I friend told me that this episode 23 will be the last episode that we can see Hiro and Ichigo squad together. Because the battle in the space is really messed up, and sadly that no one will come back after that. He is the one who animated a small part from the battle scene and the ending scene, so he told me that there are 4 deaths and 3 missing during the combat (got blew away from the explosion of the "Mothership"), some get shot by the gunship, I try to ask him whose deaths but he refused to speak out. He just say that there is a member from Ichigo squad who will get a painful death, really painful.

About the ENDING SPOILER ALERT . . And the ending scene will be Zero Two standing from the ground with Kokoro looking at the sky everyday and still believe that Hiro and Ichigo squad will come back someday. 002 came back to normal, she knows what happened in the space but still believes that everyone will survive and come back. Aaaaaaaand, I'm not sure about this, but my friend said "It's not done yet." So I think there will be a season 2 or something, he just gave me that hint. Well, that's all I know.

It's pretty obvious that the three out of the four deaths mentioned will be the remaining Nines, as they all have a death wish to end up in the battlefield.

As for the last death, then my bet could be on Nana sacrificing herself for Squad 13.

In the story book, the princess flies away from the Prince's side never to return.

The roles could get reversed based on the comments that one of missing three could end up being Hiro, since they state the following episode would be the last one we're going to see Hiro and Zero Two together.

As for the other two missing, maybe they would be Goro and Zorome, my bet.

Or all those comments are just for baiting and teasing, and, actually, there could be a bittersweet conclusion.

No, not really. I normally sceptical of this sort of information. I'll pay attention to it, but I'll wait until the actual episode before determining whether they were right or not. But, I also agree that there will be deaths in this episode and that like Guido says maybe two or all of the nines will die in this episode.

Edit: There's also definitely gonna be some cliffhanger of some sort.

well if it is the "same guy again" will be weird if him was right here and wrong on previous, because how the guy lied to him in previous episode but now is telling the truth it's feel more like him giving his own prediction than actually "someone told" if was the same person, that is why really is hard take that spoilers really seruous or even possible, at last for me.

Because they were developed in Colonies in space? In the Gundam universe, half of humanity is in colonies in space and has been for decades so designing mechs for both space and land seems like a given. There's actually a scene in Gundam The Origin that shows the first mobile suit in development phase being tested in space battle. We don't ask because we assume the extensive testing was already done.

But the most important reason is that in Gundam, mobile suits are established to work both in space and on land from the beginning. It's not a sudden reveal close to the finale.

However in this show the mechs were designed by Dr Franxx but there's nothing to suggest they were designed with space in mind, nor any suggestion that they were tested in space. We'll probably get some belated footnote about it in the next episode at most. But just saying they're based off Klaxosaurs that happen to work in space isn't exactly thorough worldbuilding.

Gundam was also at first designed for surface combat and later model add thruster to move in space , however they still need the navy to carry them around and only advance model can achieve atmosphere re-entry .

Franxx unit can operate in space as long as it have oxygen supply and thruster to move around , and this time they also have modification ( that black armor they are wearing ) .

That's mostly for series like Gundam Wing when Sandrock & Heavyarms need additional thrusters in space. But in the original UC-verse Mobile Suit Gundam, the RX-78-2 Gundam was built to fight in both space and land without the need to add more thrusters. Most Gundams only need assistance in the form of additional armaments or backpack when it needs to fly in the atmosphere or dive deep in the ocean. But even on those fronts, there are Gundams that were built to be able to fly (eg. Wing Gundam, duh) or dive deep (eg. Abyss Gundam & Forbidden Gundam series).

Also, why did you start to bring up Gundam again? You want this thread to be derailed?

According to Animenewsnetwork, due to Yuichiro Umehara's hospitalization because of his autoimmune disease. They are replacing Goro's voice actor with Daiki Hamano for episodes 23 and 24 of Darling in the Franxx.

Daiki's biggest roles are Go Onizuka from Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS and Dante Mogro from Iron-blooded Orphans. So I wonder how that will turn out ?

Eh, really? Both Dante & Go are buff characters with deep and manly voices. Let's see if Daiki has that range to replicate previous Goro's voice. This should be interesting.

I mean I'm not sure why anybody would get hung up over Franxx in space either. It's not like they were ever designed with realism in mind what with the doggy sex position and the whole "only children with functional sex organs can pilot them for some reason" bullshit. The fact that they can operate in space is hardly my concern.

Darling in the Franxx Episode 23 Post-Livestream Impressions
*Spoiler warnings definitely apply.

Wow, the episode went by way too fast for me.

So, a lot of exciting things happened this episode. Mitsuru and Kokoro making up and ZeroTwo literally becoming Strelitzia Apus or "True Apus" (It went full-blown Madoka Magica for a couple of scenes). Hiro also becomes a literal "Darling in the Franxx." There's a lot of shifting between Earth and Mars. Like the host from Nearly on Red said most of Kokoro's issues were about her purpose on how she can't fight anymore now that's she pregnant and Papa is gone. She ended up deciding to keep the baby and raise it with Mitsuru. Like the host also said, ZeroTwo underwent a different transformation in a shared knowledge kind of way in that they completed the next page of the new storybook and their story. However, the story hasn't exactly ended yet.

There were some deaths – namely Nine Alpha for one. But that's covered by the recap. I'm not really sure if the other Nines died, but Nine Alpha definitely died. All of Squad 13 survived, which is great.

Basic Recap

• The episode starts with Kokoro and Mitsuru and ZeroTwo’s body watching as Hiro and the others fly off into space. In the flashback, Mitsuru tells Hiro that he will be staying behind with Kokoro and Hiro accepts his decision. Kokoro is upset and asks why Mitsuru didn’t go with someone else and its clear she doesn’t want to burden him. But Mitsuru declares that it’s not her fault because this is what he had decided for himself. He also declares that he has to take responsibility for his actions/choices.
• In space, everyone is excitedly flying around and trying to get used to their upgraded Franxx and Hiro is surprised that he can connect with Nine Alpha. Nine Alpha still looks like he’s in bad shape, but he says that its possible because they’re clones. Hachi then tells everyone to get back inside the spaceship because they’re taking off for Mars now.
• On Earth, Kokoro is bandaging ZeroTwo at the foot of Genista as ZeroTwo gets injured again right as the space fleet leaves the atmosphere. Kokoro is wondering about what ZeroTwo is going through and laments her helplessness in this situation.
• In the spaceship, Hachi and Nana are talking about their roles as parents and how they don’t want the children hurt again. In the hangar, Goro apologizes to Hiro for punching him and Goro, Hiro and Ichigo have their friendship laugh session, but then the fleet suddenly gets attacked close to Mars. Everyone gets ready to take off and everyone sees Strelizia Apus who is fighting off the VIRM. They then take off and start fighting the ViRM.
• There are lots of exciting actions scenes and it looks like ZeroTwo/Strelizia Apus recognizes that Hiro is there. Hiro gets close to the Apus, but they are attacked by a giant purple VIRM. Nine Alpha ejects Hiro into the Apus’ hatch to fight off the giant VIRM and makes this heroic speech about how the battlefield is the only place for them, right before he self-destructs and kills himself.
• As Hiro climbs his way to the cockpit, Hiro is mentally calling out for ZeroTwo. Back on Earth, ZeroTwo’s body is struggling to get to space as Kokoro tries to make her go back because she’s taking more injuries, suddenly, ZeroTwo’s body and mind resonates with Hiro and tentacles come out of the cockpit. Hiro allows them to devour him and he finds himself in the picture book world. ZeroTwo is trying to get him to go back because she can’t go back.
• Hachi gets injured protecting Nana and he tells Nana to go ahead to the escape pod, but Nana refuses because he has a responsibility to those children too. Suddenly, the VIRM appear and tell everyone to give up, it’s pointless, they can’t win etc. All of the Franxx pilots get captured or are still fighting. Everyone is certain that Hiro will succeed.
• Back on Earth, it’s raining, and Mitsuru runs up to Kokoro telling her to go back inside. Kokoro refuses because she has decided that it's her duty to stay with ZeroTwo, but Mitsuru tells her not to bear it alone, he’ll stay with her. He yells at her not to sacrifice their future and that they'll raise their child together and the baby's their hope and that he loves her basically. It's this huge love confession.
• Mitsuru reveals that he's beginning to remember some things, but even if he didn’t, they’ll remember bit by bit. He then pulls out the rings and there’s lots of crying, making up and name screaming.
• In the picture book world, ZeroTwo says that she wants Hiro to stay a human, but Hiro appears in his drawn king form (from his badly drawn drawing in episode 16/17) and manages to reach out to ZeroTwo, before turning back into himself.
• At the same time on Earth, ZeroTwo’s body turns to stone before appearing in the picture book world. Hiro and ZeroTwo join together and ZeroTwo transforms into a giant Strelitzia Apus version of herself- like ZeroTwo's human appearance in the Franxx without the mask (kind of like a gundam gal, but more of a Madoka Magica-esque Goddess transformation) which I shall dub as "ZeroTwo's Strelitzia Goddess mode") with Hiro who has now grown out his horns in the cockpit with shining blue eyes. (He's human, but they're similar to the original Klaxxosaurs).
• ZeroTwo literally becoming Strelizia and fights off the fleet. However, just as it looks like they beat them, devices suddenly appear on Phobos and Deimos (Mars' moons) and opens up a warp gate. Hiro announces that he and ZeroTwo are heading through that gate to completely destroy the VIRM with the Klaxxosaur mothership which is a bomb, Hiro horns have grown as well. Ichigo begs him not to go but accepts their decision and makes them promise to come back. ZeroTwo says that they will.
• On Earth, Mitsuru and Kokoro are holding hands as they look up into the sky. They are wearing their wedding rings again.
• In space, Hiro and ZeroTwo leave through the warp gate with a picture of everyone that was taken the day before the wedding in his cockpit

Impressions

• Daiki Hamano’s Goro is interesting, to say the least. It’s close and is in the same vocal range as Yuichiro. It kind of sounds like Goro if his voice broke, but it's a bit awkward, so it’ll take some time to get used to it.
• I liked how the Franxx's space thrusters had one red and one blue light coming out of it while the Nines Franxx just had the red light. It's nice symbolism.
• Like I thought, there was a lot of yaoi comments in the livestream chat when Hiro was shown riding with Nine Alpha, sigh.
• My absolute favourite part was ZeroTwo's final transformation, hands down!

Best Parts

• Mitsuru X Kokoro moments
• Nine Alpha getting some redemption by blowing himself up to kill a giant VIRM.
• Nana and Hachi bonding
• Mental Storybook world
• ZeroTwo's final transformation into her Goddess/True Apus/Wedding Dress mode and literally becoming Strelizia before decimating the fleet.

I found a reference to the Persian Bird of Paradise called a "Huma" Bird. It's basically the same as a Jian and a Klaxxosaur, but is often compared to a Phoenix and I think Strelitzia Apus is partially or maybe mostly based on this bird in its appearance and role in the story.

In several variations of the Huma myths, the bird is said to be phoenix-like, consuming itself in fire every few hundred years, only to rise anew from the ashes, the Huma bird is said to have both the male and female natures in one body, (Franxx) each nature having one wing and one leg (Jian). Huma is considered to be compassionate, and a 'bird of fortune' since its shadow (or touch) is said to be auspicious. It says that the Huma bird is said to never come to rest, living its entire life flying invisibly high above the earth, and never alighting on the ground (in some legends it is said to have no legs).

It also bestows kingship. The kingship-bestowing function of the Huma bird reappear in Indian stories of the Mughal era, in which the shadow (or the alighting) of the Huma bird on a person's head or shoulder were said to bestow (or foretell) kingship. Accordingly, the feathers decorating the turbans of kings were said to be plumage of the Huma bird.[10]

But, the most interesting part of the Huma bird's role in giving kingship is what is written here:

Sufi teacher Inayat Khan gives the bestowed-kingship legend a spiritual dimension: "Its true meaning is that when a person's thoughts so evolve that they break all limitation, then he becomes as a king, it is the limitation of language that it can only describe the Most High as something like a king."[4] The Huma bird symbolizes unreachable highness in Turkish folk literature.

And I think this definitely applies to ZeroTwo and Hiro during their final transformation. Because when Hiro reaches out to ZeroTwo with his thoughts, he breaks all physical and mental limitations and becomes a literal king during this final transformation thanks to Apus who is named for the Bird of Paradise. In ZeroTwo's case, she transcends her physical body and becomes a transcendent being like a goddess.
