Karakuridoji Ultimo (Stan Lee x Hiroyuki Takei)

Karakuridoji Ultimo is a one-shot prologue manga that will launch with Jump's new Jump SQ2 magazine on April 18th.

Story

Ultimo is one of two mysterious floating figures who appear over Farmless City, stunning the citizens below. The other is the apparently evil Vice, and a battle between the two ensues, causing destruction and devastation to fall on the city. The Ultimo story tells the mystery of the two figures, their origin, and who they really are.

The Staff

The 32 page prologue chapter is a manga collaboration between Stan Lee (X-men, Spiderman) and Hiroyuki Takei (Shaman King). Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment created the property, and there is also an anime TV series in pre-production by Dream Ranch Japan.

I read the first volume yesterday. Honestly, I was rather underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, per se, but it was very formulaic. Not much point in putting those two together. Just grab a random shonen mangaka and he can do that much. I didn't really see the western influence. Except maybe in the doll maker - is he a Stan Lee self-insert? Not that I know what form western influence would take, but as I said, it was the usual shonen manga fare. Idiot hero who acquires a very devoted super powered servant. They then go on to fight other similar pairs. Oh, and there are two timelines, because of reincarnation - you don't find that in every series, but it's not exactly unheard of either. One whacky misunderstanding - the ratio's kinda low. Is it going to rise? One rich, down to earth, smart sidekick. Like Manta, but slightly taller.
