Episode 1 is out on Funimation
This is pretty cool. We got classic Gridman style mech action and a lot of lives are changed on this faithful day. Even from this first episode, there's a mech in combat piloted by Gauma going up against a monster in the city. He actually seems like a pretty tough guy but I'm curious how the anime will develop his character. But yeah, I think this is a pretty cool start. Out of all the cast, Gauma is one to keep a close eye on. Episode is kinda crazy though.

So is this supposed to be Akane's virtual world left untethered after she left and went back to the real world at the end of SSSS.Grdiman? And now somehow weird happenings and Kaiju are starting to pop up again? Will we see older versions of the Gridman cast? And what's going on ?
Yomogi and Gauma's relationship reads to me like it might be a more involved and dynamic take on Yuuta and Gridman's relationship (minus the whole being the same person deal). When you give a random wild man on the street some food and he basically becomes your bothersome buddy and gets you roped into fighting Kaiju . Yume feels like a mix of Rikka and Akane, being this good-looking, listless, high school girl with an air of mystery about her. It seems like part of her emotional issues stem from the death of an older sister, and maybe a promise they made that can't be kept any more? Is that why she constantly makes promises with guys and then breaks them? Will Yomogi be the one to get through to her and the wall she puts up because he wants to understand her better ? Yomogi obviously doesn't appreciate his (admittedly hot) mom dragging him to meet her new paramour . I'm not sure what the deal is with the cousins. The older one is unemployed and doesn't seem to want to do anything, while Chie is willingly skipping school and doing nothing more than trying to get her cousin out of the house. And then the older one gets roped into the main story because Dynazenon grabs him. Will Chie end up taking her cousins spot in Dynazenon occasionally? Are we sticking with this configuration of four people ? So Gauma is a Kaiju user who can't control Kaiju? Did he lose his powers somehow? And how did he get a hold of Dynazenon ? When Kaiju attack, where's Gridman when you need him? Instead we get Dynazenon, and whereas Gridman was basically cyber-Ultraman, Dynazenon is more of a variable mech based off Dyna Dragon from the classic Gridman show. It seems like you need four people to use Dynazenon, but Gauma did pretty much all the piloting so I wonder where the other users come in. And does Dynazenon have more than just the Mecha and Dragon form? Does it have four forms to match how many operators it has and with all the components? Will we see the smaller core of Dynazenon that we saw briefly when it transformed into Dyan Rex get into battle ? Nothing quite like a return to the Gridman universe with a dramatic and action-packed monster fight set to the Opening theme . Gauma said "them" so I guess he knows who is behind the Kaiju .

Scarred Souls Shine like Stars.
We’ve certainly got at least two scarred souls so far in Yomogi and Yume. I really like the broken promise angle for Yume. What of the white pebbles being spread everywhere at the beginning? Kaiju waiting to hatch? Who spread them? Wait... upon watching with a better connection and bigger screen... those pebbles were scattered throughout the city from the sky! There could definitely be some artificial world / god type stuff going on here. Oh, and it’s great that a special dog is once again the cause of everything!

Somehow, the impression I got by the end was better Kiznaiver with giant robots. The cute tiny girl sure helped with that, even if she ain't crazy hyper like Nico.
Not that I say it as an insult, everything worked well, the fight was great, and I look forward to see what comes next. Guess we'll be getting a different form of Dynazenon for each character? I really want to see what Minami's will be. I have to say, this feels way more like a proper mecha series and despite the quiet first half, it still felt like more was happening than in Gridman. God, I missed some good mecha. |

I think Kiznaiver with Giants Robots is a good description, the cast is definitely larger compared to Gridman. Opening sounds good as you would expect from Masayoshi Ōishi and as soon as I heard the Dynazenon chorus when the mecha materialised I immediately figured out Shiro Sagisu was the composer of this series. Either she's going to be the fifth member or another possibility is Gauma dying and Chie replacing him. I am bit surprised they went for a four man team as four sounds a lot like dead, so four man teams are usually avoided in east Asian cultures.

Episode 1 is pretty intriguing. True to its predecessor, first episode is pretty simple to give the audience an impression of the start of episodic status quo. So many questions (including where the hell is Gridman and why a random alien-dude has the Dyna-Rex?). But I'm sure the show will answer them along the way. Maybe Gridman is still busy taking down other interdimensional megalomaniac overlords somewhere. He's a Hyper Agent after all .

So yeah, I don't think Japan has a problem making mecha shows with 4-people teams.

I guess I'm the third person that will end up describing this as Kizanaver with robots. We met all the pilots, though Chie has not got into the robot, so we'll see how she stays involved. It looks the Dynazenon will have a different form for everyone too.

At least this time they're telling us from the start that the girl isn't right in the head. I doubt she will be even 1/100th as crazy as Akane though. Her behavior is odd, but it's understandable given that she's lost her sister and her family is quite obviously broken since, with the mother unable to move on and the father being irritated she won't/can't.
Gauma is big question mark. A kaiju user? His powers don't seem to be working though. Is it maybe because he was kicked out of his own cyberspace where he was like Akane and landed in this one? And why does he have Dynazenon? As for Gridman's absence, well, can't be everywhere. I expect him to show up near the end though.

At least the girl herself seems to understand there's something wrong with her. Heck, they actually went a step above in giving some hints about just what is wrong with her. Seems likely her sister is dead and that's the core of it. Maybe she broke a promise to her and that contributed in some way to her death? Certainly promises and the loss seems to be connected, but I'm just not sure how yet.
Heck, kind of interesting that both Minami and Yomogi have complicated familial situations. Seems like Yomogi's mother is dating and likely looking to get re-married. Although makes for really awkward situations with her dragging her teenage son along for her dates. I get that if they are getting together that he should probably get to know his future step-father, but it still seems awkward. I'm not going to judge the guy since we barely got to meet him. But certainly his attempts to win Yomogi over with money isn't working. Heck, Yomogi might be working so much because he wants to move out as soon as possible. Lot of questions about Gauma. I'll trust that he used to have the power to control kaiju. Did he change sides or just leave the group he was with? Curious how he ended up with Dynazenon since he didn't even know what it was before the fight started. Curious. Good first episode.

As a die-hard of Gainax if not Ultraman, loved that premiere. Captures the same charm as Gridman and starts off a little more briskly without having to do the same heavy lifting.
That said, two subbing choices really annoyed me. "Koukousei" as "Freshman" is simply flat-out wrong - it doesn't mean that in any context. And "ijime" as "teasing" is clearly a poor choice when we're talking about someone driven to suicide. This is "bullying" plain and simple.
