He's already shown himself to be a go to guy to fix things (Ep 1. when Ayame brought her father's gun in to be fixed) and also a tinkerer on the side. I expect some fun stuff from him during the rest of the series.

Spoiler for the English translations of Chinese subtitles for Episode 2:

They're fairly accurate, except for a few amusing slip ups, notably: "Rokkon shoujou!"

To be fair, this particular phrase is extremely difficult to translate, as it's a reference to a very obscure Buddhist expression ( 六根清淨 / ろっこん しょうじょう ), which means the "purification of the six roots of perception", namely, the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

If you imagine the bushi ( 武士, which the anon subs mis-translated as mushi ) as modern-day rifleman, the sergeant would probably be screaming something like, "Stay focused! Aim sharp and fire!"

That said, rough though these translations are, I actually much prefer them to the variety of English subs out there. The Chinese subs are closer to the original spirit of the Japanese, and also avoid the unnecessary swear words in some of the unofficial English subs.

It seems that Mumei may be the girl from Ikoma's memories, or at least someone who reminds him heavily of her (which probably explains why he was initially stunned to see her). That childhood friend must have been very important to him, as her death has become his reason for being.

This show continues to deliver. Competent juniors stepping up (apprentice engineer, what I would call a fireman from her observed duties in episode 1), Mumei being awesome without being overly powerful

, the OP was very good, and the music throughout has been great.

My only nitpick was Mumei being depicted with the classic anime trope of running, bent forward with her arms angled back at her sides as she ran full speed. Its a very ridiculous pose to adopt if you are actually trying to run! But its become a classic part of anime so I suppose we have to live with it.

I see a faction war coming within the survivors between those who support Ayame, the Lord's daughter, and those who would support someone else as the leader of the refugees.

I'm not sure which way the chief samurai will go: he will be divided between loyalty to the Lord's daughter and his own ruthless practicality (which he has displayed several times) which would urge him to support an experienced adult rather than a child as leader

Ikoma nd Mumei having those glowing hearts is also not going to help unit and peace aboard the train.

Best part of the sub: "2.8 (idk the measurement)" LOL

It's obvious the circumstances of her physiology are different from Ikoma. I'm guessing he doesn't suffer from a time limit like she does.

This series feels like the kind of show Wit Studio wanted to make with Attack on Titan but couldn't due to being tied down to the source material. Since they have free reign over this property, they're going all out and having a blast with it.

I really hope the budget isn't being exhausted this early though. AoT season 2 will end up as a slideshow if this tanks

Spoiler for one more English translation note for the Chinese subtitles, a matter of time and distance:

At 3:26, Mumei estimated that the Iron Fortress is 二里八町 (ni ri ha' cho) away from her location.

One 里 is one Japanese league. That's an old Japanese unit of measurement, and is equivalent to about 3.9km, or 2.4 miles.

And one 町 is about 109m, or 119 yards.

Meaning to say, her distance to the Kotetsujo was about 8.7km, or 5.4 miles (two 里 eight 町).

She also estimated that she had a quarter of a koku ( 刻 ) to cover the distance. One 刻 is about two hours, so a quarter of a koku is about 30 minutes.

It may have a standard budget like One Punch Man had, and since this is an original anime the studio probably managed to not overwork the crew with other projects and that's why we have the current animation quality. Sometimes that is more important than high budgets. Not sure if that's the case here tho.

I will wait for episode 2 to air in Japan. The Chinese version looks censored with low video quality and giant chinese hardsubs imbued into it. It's a waste seeing a butchered version of this when we have such high quality animation being used in the series.

I don't think there were any censored parts that were specifically modified for the Chinese version. The subs themselves are imo easy to ignore since they are thin without much of a stroke border. And then the quality is still better than 480p, maybe not full 720p but quite passable. Just sayin'.

I don't think Ikoma will suffer from a time limit like her. There are a few factors that could determine why that would be the case.

As for Ikoma bringing something new to the table, I'm not too worried about that. The guy is obviously smart and driven, so I'm sure he'll come up with something.

Says Ep 2 to be shown on Fuji TV on 4/21. Guessing if things go smoothly, Ep 3 will be in it's normal 4/22 slot. However another big earthquake hit that same area a few hours ago. Hopefully things calm down over there for those poor folk.

Yeah, the narutard run tends to ruin the characters (of any anime) a bit in my opinion. Still this anime is amazing so far.

The time limit Mumei mentioned is interesting in it self. The activation time of her super human power, or something to do with her life span too?

I assume there have to be bigger threats down the road.. the K-zombies will end up being non factors soon as this progresses , with MC's nail gun mass production/super power Half humans/Way to stop the virus. Solutions are all there already.

And yeah, this really looks like "What AoT ought to be like". Seems like Ep 3 will be mostly world-building and exposition. But if this is only one cour, I dun expect them to go too deep.
