Just watched the first episode. I wouldn't say the comedy is misplaced - Yoichi's intervention stopped things from getting out of hand and the rest was Nobunaga catching up to history. Better get it over with in a comedy skit than have it lurking around the shadows of angst and regret.
I like the art style, the animation isn't bad, the soundtrack is good (so far), but I have no idea what the characters will be doing. If the drifters are gathered from all sorts of eras, who's to stop SEALs from coming over? I assume they are supposed to fight, but who will they be up against? How will they fight if they can't get contemporary resources for their equipment or battle tactics (where does Yoichi get his arrows)? It intrigues me, so I'm sticking with this one for now. |

Man, if only Berserk was animated like this.
Half action, half comedy is what I'm getting here. I personally don't get the comedy as much as I would like, as my 'real' knowledge of the Warring States Era is limited to what Crash Course did. So definitely wasn't a bore to watch, but I have doubts this will make it past my 3 episode grace period since the comedy doesn't line up with my humour.

Yoichi is a guy. That's for sure.
I mean Minamoto no Yoshitsune was described as a very pretty boy. The comedy is out of nowhere. But it's still a bit funny. But damn, Toyohisa channeling his inner Yukimura. Dat elf accent though.

Drifters. First Thoughts
Fight Song
Been waiting for Drifters since the anime got announced the past season. The first episode served the settings and characters to play in a yet to be seen war of worldly proportions. I mean we're going to see a wild assortment of historical figures all thrown and mixed in a fantasy world. For starters, at times the first episode held no barrels at displaying the guts and blood splattered all over the Battle of Sekigahara, however, at other times some mild censoring played when not displaying the bodies actually getting disemboweled or hacked by Toyohisa and his forces, and then Naomasa and his forces. So, I can only pray that the DVD releases are going to fix that issue. As I mentioned previously, the first episode sets up the camp at introducing Toyohisa into the brand-new world he was sent to, and, then, waking up to meet Nobunaga and Yoichi who previously found themselves under similar circumstances like him once encountering the mystery man of the unknown corridor. Hence, we'll have to wait for the second episode to begin actual explanations answering what our characters are doing in that world, why is that world meeting its end, what are the drifters, and who are the mystery figures running under the banner of the Octobrist group. I want to comment that I've never ever read the manga before just to make clear that I'm just an anime-only fan. As for the comedy, the gags made me to LMAO the first time around. However, after rewatching the same episode they just feel weird and at times non-sensical. Furthermore, I read somewhere else that Hirano-sensei has this bad timing or no timing at all when pulling his trademark pranks in his works, resulting at times falling flat or short from the intended humor even when serious scenes are playing. |

Episode 2
Damn that was just intense and violent. Of course, seeing it uncensored made more so with the stabbing and bloodshed. Shimazu is such a badass the way he swings his sword and showing no mercy. Also loved the instrumental music they used this episode. Oh and Easy made an appearance at the end. Lovely. The OP song has a nice style to it. Quite catchy imo.

The soldiers had it coming. So besides Elves we got dwarves and hobbits as well and seemingly all demi-humans are in some sort of slavery + slow genocide to the humans who govern over everything. Man, I can already imagine what must have happened to the Elves women and girls the soldiers took with them...
So we got Murasaki who "recruits" Drifters who fight to make "the wrongs right again" whereas we have Easy and her Ends who are on the attack, probably the human empire. The Octobrists aren't explained yet, though they seem to be on the Drifters side and against the Ends. Guess Oppai Megane-chan has to contact our Drifter trio as her Leader and his fort is under attack of the Black King.

Huh, so we have Hannibal and Scipio already for the Drifters' side . Also, is the language the Elves are speaking something specific, or just random gibberish? I heard them say "bratj" for "brother" and so I thought it may be Russian (perhaps learned from some long past Drifter... Stalin ?), but I can't tell of course.

Didn't expect him to throw his sword at the commander, nice to see he has other techniques other than just a sword, though still the same. All just battle sense.
Was a bit cautious on the world they're trying to build, but the sides and circumstances are made a bit more clear in episode 2. Not sure why Nobunaga burned the fields, if it was the enemies, I can see it, but since they're taking over the village anyway, its just gonna hurt the subjects. Unless he's doing it so that they have no choice but to submit to them, but still. Feels inefficient lol.

Episode 2
Oh hey, it's Scipio and Hannibal! Anyway, yes, I also wonder just how did all this remain uncensored - I expected the black fog or maybe creative editing, but nope, as far as I can tell it's all as it was in the OVA. The OP is fairly cool, lots of fun - although, uh, should I take that certain shot as Sem's boobs flapping in the wind...? Er... |

So all of this is just match between Murasaki and Easy. It also looks like more Drifters are going to be added join the crew.
What happened to those soldiers was brutal, but it's not like they didn't have it coming.
