Sapper, episode 4 hasn't happened yet. Keep all discussions relating to it and anything in it that is not in the first three episodes beneath spoiler tags, please.

There's this rather funny parody video on youtube called "The Death and Return of Superman", in which it made fun of how Superman supposedly got killed but returned totally unharmed because he was in a "healing coma".

When a show treats death so lightly, that people can just come back from the dead, the meaning of death is lost. In other words, the anime did not kill Shidou, but the one they succeeded in killing is death.

Seriously? That's not even the point. Of course there will be some stupid reason why he lives forever. But that's my point. It's stupid. Having an immortal protagonist in a silly show like this is a horrible detractor and lazy writing.

I though protagonists who doesn't die when killed is standart anime element, isn't it? Personaly I have many complains about DaL but him being immortal is on bottom of list (but still there).

PS: I realy enjoyed KoreZom, with same "plot device"

Just watched episode 1, and Kotori's total shift in attitude just doesn't cut it for me (yet). Which is why I thought the episode was quite good until he got rescued and woke up. Haven't read the LN before, so hopefully it gets better.

That ED...

for chapter 3 :

good episode... honestly they just need to work a little about the battle scene
so far, the battle is so passive...
well, I know the battle isn't the point though

Tohka's moeness is over 9000.... I almost died though
and Tobiichi just shot his love interest... what a turning point...
well, Tohka and Shido interaction is very enjoyable so far
I won't put too much expectation for Date a Live... this is just enjoyable anime.. not epic though

It's only lazy writing when it's used as a tool to get out of an otherwise inescapable situation. That is not what happened here. This was obviously a scene specifically written with that power in mind.

Moreover, I don't think it's a power he's going to use that often. The point of this wasn't to show off that he can come back from the dead, but to let us know "hey, something weird has already happened to Shido before the show began, something he is unaware of, and Kotori knows about it."

My general impression about shidou is : Nothing special, nothing interesting, just your usual run-off-the-mill harem MC with some gary-stu power to automatically make the heroines gravitate into him (via kissing to be precise), and gets saved by the same gary stu power when shit got real. Moreover, he's just as clueless and does things purely on a whim. Oh, and the whole "winning girl's heart just by saying nice things to her" (I'm talking about that boring "I'll protect you whatever what happens" line) = lame, cause good harem MC HAVE TO prove himself through action, not just self-important talking.

Oh well, at least the girls are cute and save this show for me

Finished episode 4. I'll just be writing my thoughts with no specific reference to the story and the episode, so no spoilers here.

Let's see, I'm not a fan of Campione and DxD, but I think they are tons better! In this show, everything is a plot convenience to help the protag get his harem! I felt the same way about Campione, but at least, in Campione, even from the supposedly badly made anime, I can see that the plot conveniences are backed up with some substance and effort, and there are a few interesting and intriguing aspects in the story. But not for Date-A-Live IMO. Now, even Kotori's pretty twintails can't save the show for me. Dropped.

hmm, this show is so confusing. It tries to be funny, then serious and then throws in some sci-fi or fantasy elements.
Apart from the character designs, which seem to be copied from other series, nothing stands out, apart from bad writing. I didn't knew that it was based on a light novel, but you can clearly see those prints all over in this adaption.

I know this isn't ideal or perfect, but please try to live with this arrangement for now. We'll revisit the way things are going in a little bit to measure the effectiveness of each approach.

You can say that about 80% to 90% of all anime series...

Ep 3

I must say I preferred the battle in the LN, Touka seemed more epically powerful then, the monitors showed her blasting away at Origama who was BSOD-ing. Only breaking the barrier just before Shido came in.

Overall, could have gone on longer, but I think this was too long for 1 ep yet too short for a second ep...

The thing with that is the show starts out with setting up that the protagonist is a zombie. That he is undead and cannot die via normal means. And the whole show is set up around his zombie powers.

That is exactly why it was lame though. The scene reeks of "how can we get Tohka emotionally stirred in one setting? Kill the protagonist! Okay great she's mad, now who's left to stop her from destroying the entire world in her rage? Uh the protagonist-wait we killed him... bring him back to life. Done good job us!"

Shido was a normal protagonist up until now. There is no real reason to suddenly give him God powers of immortality and resurrection. We as viewers weren't set up to expect it, nor does it even need it. And if it's a power he's not going to use often, it's even worse. Guy has the power to come back from being shot with a hole the size of a cantaloupe through his body yet all he's going to do is continue on his highschool hijinks and not use it to his advantage at all.

TBH, my main pet peeve of this show is the MC's characterization. Judging from the premise, i came into this show expecting kaminomi-like story (which is fascinating and smart), only to be crumbled apart upon realizing that shidou doesn't share even a single drop of Keima's charm. shidou doesn't even get girls sheerly through his effort, but merely through weird power and plot device, which convinced me that he doesn't really deserve the girls. Then i thought "Better ignore him and focus on the girls" Only to get saddened once again since the girls aren't appealing . . . at all. They're just there for the sake of being there, without any solid characterization nor fascinating personality. I can hardly buy "everything will be explained later" seeing how terrible the pacing and direction of this show (i don't read the LN but i could already tell it). In short, if the next ep still have rushing and terrible plot, aside from obvious plot device, i'll most likely drop this show
