This is actually something I welcome. For the most part the aliens in Trek looked like humans with rubber mask on them, for obvious reasons. The rubber masks did become better, but having actual alien aliens would really be nice. Yes, there is a canon explanation for it and the episode was nice, but it is still rather nonsense.

Finally, I'm not certain how I feel about robots being in the ship. Considering what Data went through in TNG and The Doctor in VGR, I hope these robots are just used as tools and not more artificial intelligence that are treated as part of the crew as Data and The Doctor were obviously still new territories for their era. Probably not. If it is about them, the Discovery will probably act as transportation and security for the treaty and/or possibly as one of the few who engaged the Sheliak prior to the treaty.
The lack of robots in Trek is actually kind of puzzling. Is there a canon explanation?

There were at least two or three episodes of the Original Series that dealt with androids that were outside Federation potential design. Data was their first seemingly well designed android.

As for a lack of robots, there was at least one episode were the Federation is using small robots, but they were a new design and displayed sentience qualities. My guess for why Starfleet doesn't use robots is likely because it was a show of the 1960s and TNG was a show of the late 1980s. Both time periods had a humanist segment of writers and producers were robots were a bad thing for humanity. Humans needed to do stuff themselves, not be helped by machines when not necessary. Also there was a thin line between a robot and a living machine in a bunch of episodes to have the audience question, what is life.

In terms of the show world itself...I'm guessing they couldn't get it right. Data's positronic brain being such a breakthrough...that basically no one could replicate it . Without that breakthrough nothing probably was functional enough. At least nothing that you'd have as a cast member.

As to whether they have a fair number of robots as tools...maybe. Could be that societies developed with that idea that people should when possible do things themselves. Use tools as much as necessary, but be the people out there doing things. Or they simply hit a technological wall that they couldn't get past. Robots developed to a point, but being unable to design a positronic brain they simply went down alternative tech paths.

How they handle robots has me curious or concerned. They should realize the lack of robots throughout Trek. If you start introducing robots en-mass then you are going to have to explain why they disappear from history after that period. And obviously you can't have anything remotely as advanced as Data considering how far in the future he is from this series and how impossible it was to develop what made him special in the first place.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Delayed Until May 2017:

"Star Trek: Discovery, the upcoming CBS series set to bring a new Star
Trek to streaming media, has been pushed back to May 2017, according
to a report from Variety. The show was originally set to air in January.

When May rolls around, Star Trek: Discovery will still roll out on CBS All
Access as originally planned, a paid streaming service that will come at a
cost of $6 per month with ads, or $10 a month without them.

The delay was caused by a push to increase the show's quality. According
to Variety:"

Star Trek Discovery lead will be Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead. She will hold the rank of lieutenant commander.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has been delayed again. Meanwhile, Spock's father has been casted.

I liked Ben Cross as Sarek, but the guy they tapped to portray him on Discovery (James Frain, recently Theo Galavan on Gotham) actually looks more the part. And he was probably the best thing about the whole St Dumas arc on Gotham.

Shame that this show looks to be doomed from the get-go. Insistence on tying it to CBS's crappy paid ads streaming service, a focus that seems to be on everything but storytelling... No wonder there are multiple delays and staff turnover.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Casts Rainn Wilson as Original
Series Character Harry Mudd:

"“Star Trek: Discovery” has cast “The Office” alum Rainn Wilson in the role of
Harry Mudd, Variety has learned. It is unknown how many episodes Wilson will
appear in at this time.

Mudd was a charismatic interstellar con man who had repeated run-ins with the crew
of the Enterprise in the original “Star Trek.” The character, who was first played
by Roger C. Carmel, also appeared in an episode of “Star Trek: The Animated
Series.”"

I don't know who they could have cast for that role, but I think just about anybody would better look the part... I know it's supposed to be 10 years before, but come on...

"Star Trek: Discovery is delayed yet again. A beloved Next Generation actor was
reportedly offered an insulting amount of money to appear on the show. It lost a
showrunner with a well-deserved fan base of his own. And CBS has made poor
marketing decision after poor marketing decision. So, how screwed is this show?
Short answer: Very."

"The Star Trek rumor mill has been full of reports that The Next Generation
actor Michael Dorn would return to his Klingon roots on Star Trek: Discovery.
Turns out, nope, that’s not happening. However, it sounds like he was offered a
part, but turned it down after hearing how small his paycheck would be."

^And then make a Star Trek x Star Wars film that will finally end the feud between both fandoms.

Throw in Stargate, and they'd have a holy trifecta.

Star Trek: Discovery Switches an Actor's Role
Mid-Production:

"At this point, I would like to see a show based on the making of Star Trek: Discovery
more than the actual Star Trek: Discovery. What is happening over there?

Previously, Shazad Latif was supposed to be playing a Klingon commander named Kol.
Now, he’s playing Lieutenant Tyler, who I swear to god is officially described with the very
informative “a Starfleet officer in the Federation.”"

Well they were bound to drag this show out onto television at some point.

Still don't have particularly high expectations. But at least it will be out to be judged instead of being constantly delayed and in production.

Anyone find it a coincidence that the Discovery trailer came out after The Orville trailer aired?
