Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (March 11, 2011)

I haven't seen anything that beats those hand-cranked chargers (the ones that are built into emergency radios and the like). My "earthquake radio" can be cranked and even has a jack for charging a phone.

It was nice to see those pictures of the cleanup and rebuilding efforts.

However, TEPCO is like a fly in the medicinal ointment.

Those old men resigning still doesn't make me feel as if the company itself has things under control.

More importantly the Govt is still tail biting each other over politics regarding TEPCO.

It is at times like this I wish the Emperor would just step in and say

"stop, fix or sepupku"

Sometimes, I wonder if the introduction of democracy has been abused by a number of asses within Asian countries that an absolute monarchy would have made things better, like Thailand and Japan.

^ I checked the Japanese twitter and found that earthquake_jp (I guess this is some official twitter account) has already release info on the magnitude (M6.3) ect. Very efficient.

The way these are feeling, we may get another (if not as strong) but close to what went down in 11th March.
The week before it happened back then is eerilly repeating itself these last 2 weeks and the shaking is feeling the exact same.
Needless to say, I am considering getting some extra supplies and restock some stuff just in case it all goes down again.

Sadly the two M6 ones these have been happening at night, 2 nights of major sleep depravation now is killing me x.x
(Fri night was my own issues but I'm stuck awake now)

Yeesh... I noticed the string on an earthquake app I have. Stocked earthquake supplies are always a good idea (as we in the Pacific Northwest wait for our Big One).

While I sometimes feel that way about a lot of the powers that be...I dunno, I still have not even a joking sympathy for absolute monarchy or any kind of totalitarian state. Yes, if there's any evidence of corruption in TEPCO's board of directors there should definitely be some kind of shakeup there (no pun intended, really), but for now, I'm not one to joke about imprisoning or executing certain people without a proper inquest or trial. Remember that the 1923 earthquake happened right when the fascist militarism was coming to full power. I'm NOT saying that will happen again in the wake of this disaster, but I am calling on us to remember the rule of law, both in this forum and in the real world.

Speaking of which, I have to admire the Japanese reserve against all these horrible challenges. If a quake of that magnitude went off here in Southern California (or more likely, WHEN) I don't think I want to know what kind of $#!+ would go down in LA. (Might make the '92 riots look like a grade-school recess.)

As Japan trembles at the thought of rice contamination ("No rice, no life") to go with all the other cherished items failing the radiometer test.... so far Chiba rice seems to be passing inspection.

I think 300km distance from the place of the accident can be considered rather safe without thourough testing. There should have been only light isotopes (short half-life) there anyway. Still, I would not necessarily consider mushrooms and the like safe without testing.

I've seen a few news articles -- just the prospect of rice being contaminated seems to strike them at their very core since rice is basically at the core of culture and spirituality... even more than tea

I had a slight panic attack at the thought of radiation from the plant drifting over the American West Coast; I can't imagine what life must be like in Fukushima Prefecture these days. Just last Monday the latest episode of Anthony Bourdain had him on a tour of the ghost city of Pripyat, Ukraine, which was right in the shadow of Chernobyl. You can actually go on tours there, provided you eat only in the car, stay on paved surfaces, and avoid touching plants, soil, moss and mold under all circumstances. This story brought that episode home to me again.

Of course, he was only there for about an hour or so. If I were one of those people spending time in Oregon, I might just make arrangements to move there. Or at least somewhere on the other side of Tokyo.

Going back a few pages...about that beached ship in one of the devastated towns; maybe it should form the centerpiece of the official national memorial to the quake. And of course the memorial (assuming one is built) should be in the devastated area and not in Tokyo. Anything otherwise would be like putting America's official 9/11 memorial on the National Mall rather than the WTC site.
