Nice Guys

I'm currently looking for a manga or anime that has a(t least one) nice, caring, sweet, sensitive, polite guy. You'd think it wouldn't be so hard to find.
More specifically, I'm looking for something that's not too ecchi, loli, etc. Just a normal manga. Also, and more difficult: a guy that starts out nice (isn't converted in some way by life/love/pain etc.)
So far, these criteria have only been met - out of the 30+ series I've seen - by Bitter Virgin. I don't necessarily need the sad story that came with that one.
Thank you in advance!
And yes, I'm a non-gay guy.

Spoiler for Gratuitous apology:

Aishiteruze Baby - anime or manga... the guy is kind of a flirt, but he is nice
Angel Densetsu - Kitano is nice to a fault; he just looks like a demon

For anime maybe Natsume Yuujinchou and its sequel.

For manga how about Saint Young Men

I'd recommend Nyan Koi, and Omamori Himari both of the male leads are pretty nice, and polite guys, also could try their manga.

Also I want to say Clannad, but I am not sure he is enough that way at the start of the series, but he does get there xD.

D.N.Angel (anime)
Reborn! (anime or manga, your pick)
Tegami Bachi (manga)
Bartender (slice of life, manga)
Defense Devil (manga)
Vampire Juji kai (manga)

That's all I can remember atm, the unspecified ones are all mainstream action/fantasy, with the exception of the last title which contains heavy doses of tragedy.

Mahoraba (anime or manga) is a great choice. Very good-hearted male lead. And my two perennial suggestions - Cross Game (both) and Seirei no Moribito (anime or novel). Kitamura Kou is the hero of Cross Game, and while he's not above being a smart-ass, he's an eminently likable and admirable guy from the very beginning. Moribito is a bit of a stretch as its a historical fantasy, and the male lead (Chagum) is 11-12 years old over the course of the series. But he's mature (realistically), absolutely a nice guy, in addition to being smart, compassionate and thoroughly noble in the best sense of the word.

Cross Game would probably be the best place to start

Kimi Ni Todoke probably counts but is more from the girl's perspective.

Crest of the Stars would be another good one. Yeah, that one is pretty good, a bit more actiony, but slice of life fans tend to like it too..

I guess Chrome Shelled Regios might count. More of an action show though.

To Aru Majutsu no Index probably counts as well.

Change 1 2 3 very much meets your request... except that it is very, very ecchi (lots of topless girls). Strange in that it actually has a plot and likable characters.

Honey and Clover also probably counts

Ah My Goddess is a classic example.

Hayate from Hayate the Combat Butler also has to count (despite his momentary, and understandable, slip up in the first episode).

Lots of nice guys around, just not many in shoujo manga, and most shounen is about action/combat or comedy. If you don't want those typical action type shows, then I suggest you start with Cross Game.

Nogizaka Haruka

Gift Eternal Rainbow

Ai Yori Aoshi and Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi - I'd say this totally fits your criteria.

Mahoraba

To Heart 2

Crescent Love

Hani Hani Operation

Could probably list a lot more...but this should be sufficient hopefully . Most of them have somewhat of a high school-romance with a tad bit of harem. All have good story lines IMO, but then again, it IS the typical high school romance.

Kimi ni Todoke has Shouta Kazehaya, who is probably one of the nicest male leads I can think of for a shoujo anime/manga. His niceness combined with his good looks is precisely why he's popular amongst his peers.

I think you're definitely searching for Natsume Yuujinchou. Ignore any preconceptions based on the summary and just watch it.

EDIT: Honey and Clover is a perfect example as well.

How about Rurouni Kenshin? Kenshin possesses all of the qualities you're looking for. He doesn't have a happy past, but he's a nice guy straight from episode one. I think the main characters of Tactics and Shounen Onmyouji are nice as well. I'm not 100% sure on this one as I haven't seen the whole series, but I consider Arima from Kare Kano as a pretty nice guy. I would have to second the suggestions of Natsume Yuujinchou, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, and D.N.Angel.

Sawaki in Moyashimon is a rather nice and rather ordinary college freshman who just happens to possess an unusual ability.

Most of the gentlemen in Saiunkoku Monogatari fit this requirement as well, though the show is set in an ancient Asian empire resembling T'ang China.

Despite his after-school job, I think Kurenai Shinkarou deserves to be placed in the "nice guy" category as well. He certainly throws himself into the task of protecting young Murasaki.

Finally, we have a recent contender in "Tsuchii" of Hanamaru Youchien. Though he's a bit on the shy side, he seems like an excellent kindergarten teacher. Sadly his love interest has the mentality of a block of wood, at least when it comes to romance.

I'd have included Tamaya Seikichi of Oh! Edo Rocket in my list, but I'm not sure how polite or sensitive he is. He fits all the other criteria in your list, though, and Sora seems to like him quite a bit.

Edit: I have one more suggestion, Tarou from Ghost Hound. The two other main boys are good-hearted, but they're not so nice on the outside.
