Winter, huh...
Well, hopefully, it's well-received enough that Yen Press decides to speed it up.
I would love to have all of the volumes of Index in English on my bookshelf.

I have very rarely seen religion portrayed in a positive light in fiction. I almost always see stuff like Tales of Symphonia where religion is portrayed in a pretty negative light. It's barely portrayed positively in Index...well overall, at least Index does give a fair treatment...both positive and negative...

Quoting from the Yen Press Site here:

Quote:
A CERTAIN MAGICAL INDEX by Kazuma Kamachi, art by Kiyotaka Haimura – I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to finally be bringing A CERTAIN MAGICAL INDEX to you guys! One of the most popular and acclaimed light novel series in Japan, INDEX is also one of our most requested titles! This winter, science and magic clash in Academy City, when one unlucky young man finds a mysterious nun in his room and gets landed in the middle of a war he never expected!
As much as I would like to avoid another Shakugan no Shana debacle, I have a feeling that this might not end up like that.

Plus, I trust Yen Press's judgement considering that they have licensed other popular light novels (eg Spice & Wolf, Haruhi).

I don't think a quick summary should be the judge of anything, Ravager.

Also, it's not only their site, but you can check the twitter account, too: https://twitter.com/yenpress

Most reactions if not all to the new announcements have been directed to Index.

How is it wrong? A LOT of people consider their veranda/balcony to be part of their apartment, and when it's basically just a studio apartment, that's the same as "their room".

Seriously, are people just looking for reasons to be pessimistic?

I thought the same, too much nitpick. Did you forget even Kamachi throws amibiguous summaries time to time? And the covers...

to be fair I'm just being critical, I want what's best and quality. I think for both of us shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Haha so it's not an isolated incident? Good to know. It's similar to the explosion of "emotions" when SAO and Accel World were licensed, so wasn't sure.

Haha... Its over for Yen press. Expect their light novel series "brand" to endlike tokyopop's light novel division. The actual licensing bit is the biggest lie I ever heard and seen in my life. In reality, Yen press have only licensed the first volume of the series as well as in Sword Art Online and accel world. The reason? It's obvious, the licensing of these light novels are very expensive, the Index Series along will cause at least 100 million dollars at least to license (licensing isn't free you know ) .

The licence that Yen press has with Kadokawa Shoten is just a per volume licensing. This is because if the first volume flop, the series will flop as well and cause a loss to Yen press, this kind of licensing is cheaper and more risky at the same time. Even if it's is successful, Yen press will still make a loss. Here's the reasons;

Spoiler for reasons:

If you think Spice and Wolf light novel is successful, you so wrong. It's because of the manga sales that Yen press is still managing to release the light novels and Yen press is barely making any profit from the light novel sales.

Remember, it's a per volume license Yen press have not a master license (Whole series). They may have an agreement with the publisher to licensing the whole series but that's different from licensing the series.

Meaning... Index series is already a flop before the first book is even released, which is just so funny.

No source, unfortunately but it's a analysis. The index series is popular that licensing it is so expensive. You may not believe me but I won't be surprised if Yen press just canned it after a few releases.

My best proof would be the licensing of hidan no aria. Only one volume then it's was canned and was reported by be a per volume licensing.

Hidan no Aria isn't what I would think of as a title to succeed in the west to begin with.

More importantly I would also like confirmation about the pricing of the license, how do you know it's 1 million dollars?

If every volume license cost 1 million dollar and need half a million in sales then all the niche mangas would be considered a failure, yet we still have volumes after volumes coming out.

It's an estimate unfortunately but I will visit bet on it that it is near that figure considering the popularity of the series plus its sales power. Also, it's worth to note that with the launch of the Comic walker app, a similar app for light novels is already imminent and it will likely feature the index series.

Also, many manga publishers like viz media, Kodansha, etc are subsidiaries of the Japanese publishers, meaning they don't really require licensing in reality. Explains wihy Naruto and Co. is a profit makers.

Let's note that success doesn't always mean profit. Check out what happened to the Reborn! manga series.
