War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

USA/UK - 'We need to spy on you for your own protection. We're at war. Only believe what we tell you as the rest is all propaganda'

It is funny because even though we know what is happening, we’re willing to except it all and nothing will ever change.

Wasn't that the point of Orwell's 1984? That even if a few people were upset, it wouldn't stop anything?

Cool... so what is it you are going to call it now that it has been revealed ?

Undertexter subtitle translation site raided by police

Quote:
Undertexter had provided fan-made translations of film and TV show dialogue, which could be merged with video files to provide on-screen text.

A spokesman for the police told the BBC they had acted after investigating a complaint by copyright holders.

Undertexter's managers insisted they had not broken the law.

Critics have suggested the raid marked an escalation in Hollywood's efforts to protect its intellectual property.

However, the Rights Alliance - the organisation that prompted the police to act - said it was not the first case of its kind in Europe.
I suspect we are not talking about anime here, but live-action movies and television shows.

Yes. Basically, just sub files for live-action movies and shows. No copyright material at all.

Swedish Copyright Agenda Police at its finest. Swedish PP and some media are on the case.

Meh. They can go ahead and vilify everyone while they're at it. It's not anyone's fault but theirs for being in the hole in their own country every time.

A massive embarrassment?

What would you call security cameras in plain view in every street and public building? Spying or surveillance?

That is not a rhetorical question, by the way, because that is effectively the case in Singapore. And it's the main reason the alleged child abuse by a pre-school teacher was revealed — a CCTV camera in every public room of the childcare centre to monitor the activities of teachers and pupils alike.

Wife ordered a hit from a hit man on her husband because 'it would be easier than divorce'

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/rel...-1226677054310

Quote:
CHILLING video has emerged of a young wife trying to hire a hit man to murder her husband because it was 'easier than divorcing' him.

Julia Charlene Merfeld, 20, of Michigan in the US, has pleaded guilty to soliciting the murder of her 27-year-old husband.

An undercover police officer posing as a hit man secretly filmed two videos of Merfeld as they negotiated the killing while sitting in a car.

At one point Merfeld explains that in her opinion, murder would be "easier than divorcing" - she wouldn't have to worry about her family's judgment or "breaking his heart" if he was killed.

Both videos were played in court yesterday.

Police allege Merfeld wanted her husband's $400,000 life insurance policy and promised to pay $50,000 for the hit.

She will be sentenced on July 30.

She is a piece of trash.

This is it right here. It had nothing to do with not being judged by her family, and obviously nothing about "sparing the husbands feelings". She was greedy and wanted money.

I can't believe how low she is. She has no real sense of morals.

Well, she'll probably be getting that jail time soon enough.

According to some, even subtitles are copyrighted, and this would thus be a breach of copyright, like translating a book into another language is also breach of copyright (see the case of the boy who translated the Harry Potter books in his own language, and got J.K. Rowling after him for violating her copyright).

The industry argues that they can't get a foothold in places where fansubs are rampant, because no one will want their (paid) stuff anymore. I don't personally agree, but the industry doesn't care what I think.

Yeah, one of them. But Orwell didn't account for the internet, which we now have. But it still doesn't matter. Continuous war does the trick. 2 + 2 = 5!

You might very well be right. AFAIK, there is nothing in Swedish law actually saying that, though... but this wouldn't be the first time anyway.

Though translating a book and providing subs for a movie isn't the same thing IMO. The translation of the book is an entire book in itself. If you read that, you don't need the original book. The subs aren't the movie itself, just an additional file.

'Course, it's the copyright industry, so none of that matters.

The article reports a different view on the state of Swedish law:
Quote:
The national co-ordinator of the intellectual property crime division at the Swedish Police Service said that it had carried out the raid after tracking computers using Undertexter's internet addresses to buildings in Stockholm and Helsingborg.

"Our copyright law doesn't allow people to make a transcript from a film that is copyright-protected without the copyright owner's permission and certainly not to make it public," said Paul Pinter.
The article also mentioned the fact that the site had a lot of advertising, which suggested it was earning money off the subtitles being distributed.

To be fair, a book is literally just words. Subtitles, on the other hand, is like a screen-play script without any directing. It's missing audio and visual which make up the whole package. In other words, they're fracking stupid.

Any lawyer with half a brain will get that charge dismissed. Technically, the payments would be for mere visits. Whether subtitles were downloaded is inconsequential to the ads generating revenue.
