Mainly bands that have had a couple of hits and then just go by the wayside.

I also listen to a lot of small bands that haven't made it big yet.

Cheers for the suggestion. I'm familiar with Nicole Russo from the Brand New Heavies.
I checked out Room Eleven on imeem and I like their sound, a bit contemporary but largely along the lines of Blues and Soul from what I heard. I particularly liked One Of These Days and Lovely Morning.
I'm guessing you've probably heard of artists like Melody Gardot, Beth Rowley, and Incognito, based on your suggestions.
I would personally recommend Jazz artists like Joshua Redman, Kyle Eastwood, and Gwilym Simcock (all instrumentalists).

Anyway, swinging back a bit more on topic, it seems like I've finalled succumbed to the Vocaloid following, albeit to a more limited degree.
I feel there's something about those synthesised voices that don't quite work for songs that involve techno-pop of some kind.
The Genki Rockets sound works better, maybe because in a Macross Plus kind of way, people are still singing to create the voice (not a fixed sample like Vocaloids).

Does horror movie soundtracks count? Because I love scores done by Goblin in most of Dario Argento's films! =D

Music that can be enjoyed purely through our ears without any visual aids are included as a genre. Generally speaking, the soundtrack genre is extremely broad and can include aspects of different, more distinct genres.
That said, I would think that a soundtrack for a horror movie is quite specific actually, especially for themes of suspense and terror.

True, true... ^_^

You should watch some of Dario Argento's movies! Claudio Simonetti (the lead keyboardist for Goblin) composes the best soundtracks in horror films. Argento's best movie in m opinion is Suspiria! ^_^

For people who are curious, my playlist consists of alot of Anime soundtracks from:
- Suzumiya Haruhi
- Lucky Star
- Clannad and Clannad After Story (OP and ED)
- K-ON!
- Kanon (OP and ED)
- Kannagi

Visual Novel:
- Air (only Tori no Uta and Farewell Song)
- Clannad (only songs with lyrics)
- Tomoyo after (only OP and ED)

Other:

There are other songs that are not J-pop I haven't added to my main playlist.
