Sorry, that doesn't compute.

A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking
advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving
faster than light. A concept for a real-life warp drive was suggested in 1994 by
Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre, however subsequent calculations found that
such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy.

Now physicists say that adjustments can be made to the proposed warp drive
that would enable it to run on significantly less energy, potentially brining the
idea back from the realm of science fiction into science."

That's pretty cool. If the unmanned versions across the solar system don't blow everything to bits in the most epic of fashion, the first unmanned between solar systems would be an interesting first steps towards a 'galaxy gun.' To protect the neighborhood and all... Although I'd prefer if we stuck to just ferrying people!

Anyways, on a vaguely related note in other places where I've seen this news posted.. why does everyone assume that any races we'd encounter would have to be more advanced and peaceful than us? Hell any commercial space exploration gives me images of East India Trading Company all over again on a galactic scale, or the Spanish conquest of SA. We say we're better than that now, but I really wonder at times (especially when it comes to resources). That.. or what? we take some Prime Directive approach? Maybe we do find some new race, but they're just as likely to be less advanced than us as they are to be more advanced, same with being friendly. Also unless I remember incorrectly any new colonies off of Earth cannot be claimed by any one nation according to the space treaty, but it says nothing about corporations (which could be a little worrying with the way corporations seem to be taking an interest in space flight). Anyway in short, seems something that could be rife for exploitation. Either way its a big space out there, chances are we wouldn't find any other intelligent races if they did exist even if we could travel between solar systems right now just limited to our own galaxy.

You got me.

From the way the article is given, it seems more focused on the implementation of the warp drive using the possibilities about bending the rules of thermodynamics, rather than focusing on the control of the release of energy, who is the thing that makes "warping" possible.

Because you need a plan before you can try to find materials to make it work. If it took more energy than was even pratical, that no one is going to attempt to build it, so control and materials is moot. But if the energy needed can be made practical scale for use, than someone will try to make something to use the idea.

The theories of flight were around before the Wright Brothers flew. It just took a while to make something practical.

Holy, can someone load it with nails and turn it into a quad-flechette weapon?

Sci-Tech Daily: Room-Temperature Superconductivity Might Have Been Attained

The operative word being "Might". Still, if this does pan out to be a room-temperature superconductor, oh the TECHNOLOGY....

With a very very strong intonation of "might" I might say.
Until now they simply discovered magnetic fields in the material right after the material being exposed to an external magnetic field.

How Video Game Statistics Could Transform War:

"U.S. soldiers could go into battle wearing "Google Glasses" that warn of exhaustion
levels by changing their vision's tint from green ("optimal") to yellow or red
("danger"), said David Musgrave, a manager at the U.S. Army's Armament Research,
Development and Engineering Center at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. Tank
commanders and helicopter pilots might see a kill ratio for how many enemy vehicles
they've destroyed compared to the rest of their unit, or even to the entire Army."

That sounds like a terrible idea, I don't need no stupid glasses to tell me when I'm exhausted on the battlefield, and I certainly don't need said stupid glasses to turn everything to red and hard to see while I'm exhausted on said battlefield and getting shot at.

Also, KB whoring is bad enough in game, let's not bring it into RL :P

I would like the glasses to blink red curves in the direction the hit came from.

That's become so standard in FPS these days.

Bullets usually kill you in 1-2 shots in real life you know.

How many fighter pilots and tank jockies would be wanting a conflict to get their kill score up for the next perk or promotion?

Wait until they include achievements to unlock such as 'von Richtofen's Cross' or "Wittman's Medal".

Elon Musk's new re-usable, hovering rocket ship in first test liftoff:

"On Friday, September 21, SpaceX's Grasshopper vertical takeoff and landing test
vehicle (VTVL) took its first test flight hop from the company's rocket testing facility
in McGregor, Texas.

The short hop of approximately 6 feet is the first major milestone for
Grasshopper, and a critical step toward a reusable first stage for SpaceX's proven
Falcon 9 rocket ...

Testing of Grasshopper continues, with the next big milestone - a hover at
roughly 100 feet - expected in the next several months."

Lies, anything other than a headshot can be reduced with body armor, and all injuries self-heal if you breath heavily enough and hide behind something!

California's Governor Brown today signed a law allowing self-driving cars on the roads of California, and signed that bill at Google HQ.

I for one, welcome our new Googley overlords.

I seem to recall seeing "self driing cars" in Disneyland's World of Tomorrow attraction...the one made from the mid-50s. The nuclear powered cars that ran in slot car like tracks that never ran into each other and never needed the driver to drive.
