There's heavy infighting going in now in the rebels now. The FSA and some other groups like the Islamic Front have turned on the Al-Qaeda-aligned ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria).

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/0...A040DO20140105

Meanwhile Al-Qaeda have seize control of Fallujah in Iraq.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middle...832201807.html

Ahh this conflict just got messier and messier, as if it wasn't messy enough already.

Syria conflict could last years, killing continues:

"The likely failure of peace talks in Syria's civil war, now heading into its fourth year, leaves no
other alternate plan from the West to stop the carnage. The violence is destabilizing border
states, as Syria increasingly becomes a recruiting zone for al-Qaeda aligned Islamic terrorists
who are sent out to launch attacks in places like Iraq and Lebanon."

Turkey shoots down Syrian plane as rebels, Assad forces battle; president’s
relative is killed:

"Turkey’s military shot down a Syrian jet Sunday after it allegedly strayed into
Turkish airspace during fierce fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces
in which a relative of President Bashar al-Assad was killed."

Syria army advances bolstered by Hezbollah, rebel divisions:

"Syria's army has been making advances against the opposition in recent days by
exploiting divisions among rebel fighters and by relying on elite fighters from
Lebanon's Hezbollah, analysts say."

Syria deploys anti-aircraft missile batteries along Turkish border:

"Syria deployed anti-aircraft missile batteries along the Turkish border in what
seems to be a response to an incident last week when a Turkish fighter jet shot
down a Syrian plane, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

Syria deployed the anti-aircraft weapons and “is ready to deal with any hostile
Turkish plan that enters Syria’s airspace,” sources from the Syrian army and
Hezbollah told Al-Rai on Monday."

European Islamic Terrorists Inspired By Syria:

"Europe is facing a growing problem with young Moslem men being recruited by
Islamic clergy to go fight alongside (and often against) the Syrian rebels.
European intelligence officials believe about 2,000 European Moslems have gone
to Syria so far and about ten percent have been killed. More than ten percent
have returned and these jihad veterans often seek out new recruits."

Syria Turns Its Fighter Jets Into Attack Planes:

"It looks like the Syrian Air Force's Fulcrums are getting their hands much dirtier all
of the sudden.

Up until now, Syria's MiG-29s have stayed largely out of the fighting. This incredible
video may show that things have changed.

They have previously been filmed orbiting over hotspots in the Syrian Civil War but
video of them actually engaging ground targets was far from common. Then we saw
the incredibly dramatic footage of what loops like a first person strafing attack by a
Syrian Air Force MiG-29."

Thank you for posting this. I can't believe this has been ignored by so many media outlets. It's a tragedy and the average person goes about not knowing what happening (when they should). It's nice to see there are still people out there who are compassionate and care when something as heart breaking as this happens.

We are not ignoring it, it's just that since there is nothing anyone can do to improve things, we are staying out of it until either 1. The government wins or 2. The rebels have a unified leader AND they win.

Bad things happen everyday. Like in North Korea. But if we can't do anything about it to make it better, it isn't very productive to just watch the death count adding up.

International intervention would only happen if Syrians can offer a roadmap to peace. Until a path is shown to us, us foreigners can't really help in any way.

It's interesting that you quoted the first post of the thread made in Nov 2011 that gave a body count of 4,000.

Today the figure is somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 dead. FYI the media outlets aren't reporting much now cause nothing much has changed. The war has dragged on for several years and is stalemated. You could avoid reading any updates for 3 months and come back to it, and find that Assad is still in power but can't crush the opposition, but the opposition can't topple Assad.

Iranian Shahed 129 drone appears over Damascus:

"A “Shahed 129″, type of drone based on the Israeli Hermes 450 model or the
Watchkeeper 450 model, but larger than those types, was spotted over Syria on
Apr. 10.

The Shahed 129 is a remotely piloted vehicle claimed to have an endurance of 24
hours and an operative range up to 2,000 kilometers. Noteworthy, in September
2013, Tehran unveiled a version of Shahed 129 domestically modified to carry
weapons, making the Iranian drone a real UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle)."

See:

http://theaviationist.com/2014/04/10...ne-over-syria/

Iranian UAV spotted over Syria could be a heavily modified drone (with
Predator inputs):

"New screenshots coming from Syria give a better view of the Shahed 129
spotted over Damascus on Apr. 10.

Noteworthy, such photos show that the version used by the Syrian Armed Forces
of the made-in-Iran UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), is sensibly different by the
one unveiled in September 2013 in Tehran.

Indeed, the remotely piloted aircraft features a nose section whose shape
resembles that of a U.S. Predator/Reaper and a tall antenna mounted on top of
it."

See:

http://theaviationist.com/2014/04/11...ified-version/

Drone Battle Over Syria:

"It appears the Syrian army is spying on rebel forces using the same drones that
consumers can buy for just a couple thousand dollars. And the rebels might be
using similar flying robots to spy right back.

It’s a do-it-yourself robot battle over war-ravaged Syria."

Syrian smugglers enjoy a free-for-all among ancient ruins:

Speaking The Unthinkable In Syria:

"A growing number of Syrian rebels, and pro-rebel Syrian civilians are beginning to
suggest the unthinkable; seek an alliance with Israel. For over half a century nearly
all Arab states have waged a military (not successful) and media (increasingly
successful) campaign to destroy Israel. But many Syrians have noted that their own
government has done far more harm to the Syrian people than Israel ever did. It’s
been noted that if you bring a badly injured Syrian to the Israeli border the Israelis
will provide medical aid and, especially for women and children, take the injured to
an Israeli hospital and return them to the border when they are well."

West fears Iran is supplying chlorine bombs to Syria:

"Western security officials are investigating allegations that Iran supplied
Chinese-made bombs filled with chlorine gas to the Syrian regime after satellite
images emerged of a Syrian supply flight at Tehran’s main airport.

Iran is understood to have ordered 10,000 chlorine canisters from China that,
according to reports, have been loaded on to flights to Syria."

Chlorine may not be necessarily used for making bombs. The industrial uses are so wide - hydrochloric acid, bleach, PVC are just the common stuff you use chlorine to make stuff with.

And chlorine is fucking easy to manufacture. 2 carbon pencil leads, a small battery and saltwater is all one needs - why buy them?

The journalist should be forced to retake his GCSE 'A' level chemistry.

Ex UN envoy predicts Syria will be 'failed state':

"Syria could become a "failed state" similar to Somalia, the former UN envoy to the country has
predicted.

Veteran diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, who stood down last week, also said that the conflict would
"blow up" and spread beyond Syria's borders.

His warning came as a Norwegian vessel with the first part of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal
left the country.

The operation to destroy Syria's chemical weapons arsenal is several months behind schedule.

Mr Brahimi made the comments in an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel in one of his
first interviews since stepping down.

"It will be become another Somalia," he warned. "It will not be divided, as many have predicted.
It's going to be a failed state, with warlords all over the place.""

Chlorine gas-like chemicals likely used in Syrian conflict: watchdog:

"Chemical weapons inspectors who came under attack while investigating claims of chlorine gas attacks in
Syria last month found information suggesting that similar chemicals had indeed been used, the global
chemical weapons watchdog said on Tuesday.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is overseeing the destruction of Syria's
chemical stockpile, said inspectors had information pointing to chlorine gas-like chemicals having been
used despite having been forced to cut short their mission after the attack."
