Since many of my comments might be spoiler-ish regarding recent reveals, I will cloak them all in a spoiler block.

Spoiler:

Okay, I have to admit that the ending surprised me a bit. That the Shinki are actively seeking to kill each other, that Kaya was herself a Shinki, that Jahar was a Duelist, that Yuuki supposedly killed his own Shinki - Kaya's predecessor, and even that Tina could be so incredibly perceptive. Regarding the last, I think that Tina has grown up quite a bit off stage during this volume. Although still somewhat naive, she is much more perceptive than I gave her credit for.

I feel sorry for Kaya, and I can only wonder whether the 'summon duelist' spell actually does choose the person best suited / fated to work with the Shinki or if it the selection is perhaps a bit more random than many believe. The only thing that might help explain Kaya and Jahar being a pair is that Jahar is as decisive as Kaya is indecisive. In that sense it might be said that he is helping her deal with matters she otherwise would be helplessly vacillating upon, unable to decide. (Although - after being surprised by Tina's perception / growth - I am wary of attributing to Kaya only what has been read so far; there almost has to be more. Kaya might well have a decisive side as well hidden as Tina's perceptive side.)

That said, if something *did* happen to Jahar, I can see Yuuki and Tina taking Kaya in, as Tina does not seem all that bloodthirsty toward other Shinki, and Kaya really does seem to wish that she could work together with other Shinki rather than work against them. Which could lead to an amusing situation in which both decide that Yuuki is their non-summoned duelist. Also, I really think that Kaya really wants a friend, and Tina really would fit rather well in that role. Kaya's future will either be dark or bright, depending on how long Jahar continued to live.

As for the kill-the-Shinki system, it might not be as complex / troubling as some believe. Perhaps maintaining the shield over so vast an area as the city simply requires 5 Shinki. If one dies, it is soon after replaced. So long as another Shinki (or even their Duelist, given the power of teleportation) is nearby at the death of one, then any excess energy the dying Shinki has will not be lost / wasted - it will be absorbed by the other Shinki. Thus the time when enough is gathered to save humanity is not slowed by their deaths, even as their competition helps spur the adventurers to ever seek to out-do each other in gathering reliquaries (and the associated divine energy).

Regarding Yuuki having killed the prior Lunar Shinki - his former Shinki - I can't help but believe that there is more to this story than has been revealed. Perhaps she literally asked for it - tired of the seemingly endless combat with her sisters, perhaps he sought to protect her and somehow messed up - killing her by accident, perhaps someone else killed her and he holds himself responsible regardless, and it is only due to some misunderstanding others think him the slayer. And how does Jahar "know" that Yuuki was the killer, given that he was not yet a Duelist at the time? How many "know" - or think they know - what happened? There is just too much unknown at this time to do more than randomly speculate.

As for a harem forming, somehow I do not see that happening: neither Tina nor Kaya has shown any interest in romance (although they do seem to want a big-brother figure in their lives). On the other hand, this is only the first volume, so perhaps after another 2-4 volumes the situation will be different. Then again, I have to admit that I am hopeful for Franka.

Maybe the reason he killed his own shinki is to let it be reborn? Since the only way to completly kill a shinki would be to have it absorbed by another one kinda like it were a relic.

It makes me wonder, If the Shinkis are so receptive to the divine energy in the artificial objects, then what about the life forms? When a Shinki is revered as a god, shouldn't it be possible for them to at least sense the energy in others? They do absorb the energy after all.

Jahar's comment to Kaya in the epilogue makes it sound like it's very rare for the Shinki to leave their temples. In Kaya and Tina's case, they have such small stores of divine energy that you probably wouldn't notice them anyway. As for the Duelists, their weapons generally don't have physical form; I'd imagine that prevents them from being tracked.

Whether she had her stored / excess divine energy absorbed or not, upon death a new Shinki would be born to replace her, and from what we have seen of Kaya she has none of the memories of the former Lunar Shinki. And given how low she is on divine energy, she did not carry over any from her former self / life (if indeed it was somehow not absorbed by another Shinki at the time of her former self's death).

Thus I tend to think that his slaying of her was not due to some wish to somehow "save" her but instead

either 1) to end a life she / they had grown tired of living, or 2) by accident while striving to protect her.

In the second case, perhaps he was trying to strike a foe, only for her to somehow get in the way and be struck instead. Or perhaps the foe somehow pulled / arranged for her to be in the way at the last moment.

In the first case, perhaps she (or even both of them) became so disillusioned by the constant strife between Shinki and their associated Duelists and Oath Legions that they decided to end it. But she could only be slain by a Duelist or a Dragon Fang level void beast, and so it fell to either allowing an enemy to kill her or her Duelist to kill her - in which case the latter may have been preferable. For himself, he would return to being mortal upon her death, and from what little we know of that period, afterward he seems to have simply thrown away his Dragon Fang and waited in the lower levels for something to kill him - only for Boris to find him and somehow convince him to continue living (albeit a less adventurous life).

Whether the first or second case, this is all supposition, and I am more inclined to believe the second case (that it was accidental / unintentional on Yuuki's part) than the first case (that it was basically an attempted double suicide).

Considering how completely Kaya seems to be manipulated (or at least lead around) by her Duelist, I wonder whether the same is more or less true of the other Shinki. Perhaps all of this strife between them is more due to their Duelists and the expectations of their Oath Legions than due to the Shinki themselves. Recall, Tina states that she awoke knowing that she must "defeat" the other Shinki - not that she must "kill" the other Shinki. It may be sophistry, but it may also be an important clue. We won't really know until we get a better idea of what the other 4 Shinki are like.

that dose make sense as the other shinki have adventures getting there relikas for them and now that you say it the fang weapons do just pop out due to the users will so the weapons are probably is another dimension until called upon

I hope that Tina will stop interfering in the fights of Yuuki, she can keep saying stuff like she's a shinki and she needs to do her duty, but the same argument can be made against her saying that Yuuki's job as a duelist is to fight for shinkis, not get helped by them, and either way it's just annoying to add bits of her setting up barrier and Franka too just so they can seem useful,I hope they get other things to do instead of interfering in fights.
That and I hope Yuuki will get back his own Holy Shield somehow, it would suck if he's the only duelist without one.
I am also curious to learn who was Yuuki's shinki and how she died at his hands, it's the newest shinki besides Tina I'm gonna guess his shinki was also the moon one.

Finally caught up! Man these chapters are long. This was good read, thanks a lot for being this to our and translating it Nandesuto.

I actually like the fact that Yuuki didn't entirely give up his merchant life-style which makes him one of the more unique LN protags, but as others have said it's shame that his Dragon Fang Gem couldn't been something other than another bog standard Infinite+1 Sword. *sigh*

So it seems like most my predictions about Sefan were right saved for him dying and Yuuki getting his spear. Well more half correct on the later. Didn't expect Bertolt to get a bit of character development though. The twist about Jahar and truth behind the Shinki's existence is also quite interesting and promises some excitement in the future, but rather contradictory. There is definitely something at odds with system especially given the legend about the Heavenly King and his five Shinkis.

Nonetheless my interest has pique so it's t say I'm looking forward to more Shinikilander: The Reckoning in the future.

She if hadn't acted he would have had died. Besides Tina wasn't interfering she was teaming up with Yuuki to takedown the monster.

That is interfering when it's a one-on-one, she can still be an important character by doing miracles, healing people and the likes, but leave the fighting to Yuuki. Teaming up is just another name for interfering.
