Yeah, she started out as a yuri ploy for Kirino then transitioned into tsundere chara with a mix of yandere like Chaos was saying. So probably Ayase ending up confessing to Kyousuke was a surprise for herself as well. It feels quite believable that if you start liking someone you believed all along you hated that you'd try to deny yourself from being straightforward and end up flip flopping between hot and cold. Which is actually a more logical development instead of being bipolar from the beginning for no apparent reason. Isn't that just how teenagers act in real life anyways?

Tsundere DO exist in RL. For example, many people will act hard against stranger at first, then slowly showed their softer side.
