They already sold HD ([H]alfasse[D]) for 2, so am I to understand we getting definitive ass this time? Is MS gone so low now that they're remastering remasters? As for AoE4, we got 0 gameplay in that, and the trailer itself looked very cheap. Not going to hold my breath. Seems they're going to probably do a Empire Earth to some extend.

I am getting the same vibe as when Blizzard tried to convince everyone that Diablo 3 would be better than Diablo 2, despite the fact that the Diablo 2 team had long disbanded.
MS is trying to sell the game as being better even though the old team is gone, and the new team has a bad recent record. And it is made worse by being a Win10 game. All signs point to fail, that MS likely had no members who has any idea of what made AoE2 good.

The current team of AoE2 is also nowhere near it if I understand right (for better or worse).
If Age of Empires Online (the AoE1 remake that never was) is anything to go by, expect this to be a giant fuckup. Marketing wise both it and Gigantic have been fucked by the MS store tie in. Among their recent glorious announcements you also have the release of Rise of Nations extended edition (which has been on steam for ages). So whoever their announcements are for, it certainly isn't the current fan base. Quote:
I guess MS had the same problem "Should we continue an old game? Should we make a new game from scratch?" Let's hope that out of FOUR! (aoe1:de, aoe2:de, aoe3:de, aoe4) we get at least one not terrible one (hopefully aoe4, but honestly that's the least likely for me atm).

Nice, been having fun with AOE 2 HD, so maybe this will also be something.
The team behind HD and the new expansions has been stellar, so I don't share the skepticism. Certainly much better than Blizzard and their half ass looking remakes.

Relic is one of the best RTS developer that we have so far. So should be fine.
wonder if they follow the original plan of AoE4 Which basically put us in WW1/2 era which could be interesting since Relic did Company of Heroes

And by inference, I believe MS have no choice but to make a new game from scratch and then dress it up to pretend it is the same game as the old series. If you don't have the old team, you simply can't have continuity. For an example where it worked out, we have the X-Com remake. The game is well received, but certain parts of the game in hindsight were only there as window dressing. The remake showed evaluation and score of your progress each month, but it doesn't DO anything. The game had it for no other reason than because the original game had it. Diablo III did the same with followers, designed to resemble DII followers but intentionally level capped to be useless, because the developers don't intend followers to be seriously used in the game. Vestigial elements, made to appease the old fans. But in the end are useless. I expect AoEIV to be a brand new game that had nothing to do with the old AoE series, but with certain design elements to fake its appearance. If the game ended up being good then it wouldn't matter that much, but that is basically what is inevitable.

Aside from the system, one of the most attractive parts of Age of Empires (1, 2) were the fact you got to use all of the ancient/medieval weapons and stuff. There are already enough Western games focused on shooting holes in people using guns, for more games to main such weaponry.

That would not be the first time /stares at EA....
But I think it's too early to grab the pitchforks. I mean they've already revived Aoe2, a nearly 20 year old game to have 3 more expansion. What kind of game gets those kinds of balance and content additions when it's so old? I mean Blizzard can't even balance its games that it is developing right now.
