Also, the anime never did play out Kanji's supposed gay-crush on Naoto asides from a few blushes up to this point.
I dunno. I was very surprised to learn the truth when I was spoiled. I realized Naoto was being voiced by a female actress. But I assumed it was the usual case of female actress voicing younger male. It never occurred to me that the character Naoto was in actuality female.

I knew about the Naoto spoiler even before the anime aired. It can't be helped since it comes up so frequently in fanart and any P4 discussions.

Spoiler for ep 16:

Of course, this is just my opinion based on my prior knowledge of the game. A sole-anime watcher may think differently (though based on opinions like mine, may be dissuaded from buying the game if they like the anime for the SOL, rather than the main mystery - as the focus in the game is, naturally, on the mystery rather than the SOL).

...wow, I didn't intend for this to be such a long post.
the dungeons are the main plot, but the main story is also about Yuu fitting in with the new friends in this new town. You can't have much attachment to this town without focus on the SoL aspect. Yuu lives a whole year in that small town, he's not just there to "solve the mystery and go home".

The anime did nicely putting out important things in the mystery aspect while making it obvious that Yuu is having a great time in Inaba. You can't say that the focus is on the mystery. yes it's the force that drives the plot forward, but just like skyrim, you got a lot more stuff to explore in that town that are also equally important

I havent played the game... so my opinion is influenced only by the anime, but I prefer the anime to be different from the game..... and isnt it better this way? I mean, if you played the game, then watching an anime that does everything 1:1 like the game would be boring. Also this way, there is still something to be explored in the game for me. I am actually thinking about buying the game.....

I'm in the same boat as you. I've always been curious about the games since Persona 3, but the graphics didn't grab at all at the time, they improved the graphics department in Persona 4 but I was still on the fence for the longest time. However thanks to the Persona 4 anime it's given me the last push I needed to officially be interested enough to buy the games now.

However I'm currently having trouble deciding if I wanna get the original Persona 4 for PS2 or if I wanna wait it out for Persona 4 the Golden for the playstation Vita.

The thing about Naoto's spoiler is that most of the gamers have known it when they see the spoilers from the Japanese spoilers. The drill is that these gamers are like "i know whatchu didnt know about naoto hehe *winkwink* -great space- *spoilah*" It was more of a suspicion and "he is just a great trap/pretty boy ala P3 MC" when her character was introduced.

Paku Romi's as the VA helped hide the fact since she had voiced both girls and boys... And the game really gave you the impression that Naoto is a boy, sans hints here and there that it is not as straightforward as you want to believe.

I believe the anime do hide it well, unless someone got spoiled middleway (something that is easily done in the net, lol).

But of course, the NA version's voice easily shatter the illusion once she talks... It is not exactly a hidden spoiler if one heard the NA version...

Well, we can cross Chie and Kanji out of the, talking with Yuulquiorra increases our bonds with him (makes me fall for him in Chie's case)-list. Who's gonna be next in line for part 2 vs Shadow Naoto? Ah, that reminds me, if you ever wanted to hear Romi Park having a moe moe kyun voice for a girl character, just give her a shadow voice, it works wonders.

Kanji was wrong, Yu didn't have a shadow....
And Kanji must be so glad he wasn't really gay after all.
Poor Yosuke, being the buttjoke of everything.

True, but Kanji assumes he did. As far as I know, only Yuu and Teddie know that Yuu didn't have a shadow.

Wouldn't Yosuke know as well? I thought he was there when Yuu first summoned his persona (actually, I think in the anime Chie was there too, she wasn't in the game IIRC). And, since nothing bad happened there, I thought Yosuke and Chie also connected the dots and realized he didn't have a shadow.

Also, for comparison's sake, here's what Naoto sounds like in the English dub (no spoilers, anime's already covered this, skip to 4:30 to hear her talk, her shadow does sound a little different but you get the general gist)

You may be right. I think I wrongly concluded that because Yuu could summon a persona that the others probably decided he had already beaten his shadow.

Somehow.

Yeah.

Uh...
In retrospect, can we just pretend I never said anything to begin with?

Did anyone else roll their eyes when Chie was telling Naoto: Don't say it!! When she was about to deny that her shadow was a side of her?
I understand the reason they say it, because it would be easier just to accept the shadow since they wouldn't have to fight at all, but when has it ever gone that smoothly? Chie don't waste your breath.
We all know she will reject that it's a part of herself, since that's been the usual routine and they all have had to face their own shadows thus far.
I was so glad Kanji stepped in and said that she needs to face and overcome this, because it's true. I was thinking, finally, somebody gets it!

Yeah, it's not like she paid any attention when Yu and Yosuke tried.
And then everyone else after.

Indeed, Naotos voice is more giving away.

Btw, thanks for the video, it gives me an idea what the game is like

Chie had passed out just before iirc so they could keep game continuity since in the game, Yosuke and Teddie are the only two with you when it first happens.

I spoiled Naoto's gender myself while looking through some images and accidentally stumbled onto Rise/Naoto yuri, I was like "EEEHHHH?!!!! That's a girl?!" -takes a closer look- Now I need to figure out why those two are paired up in the first place... Kanji/Naoto is obvious, I actually like this one the most. Yuu/Naoto is also a clear one but never found any interest in that and doubt I ever will.

Naoto was very well disguised and having Romi Paku as a seiyu (Hitsugaya, Ed, Ganta) was a very smart move since it doesn't rise any real suspicion.

Was very interested to see the reveal scene and finally it is here! Can't wait to see the rest and more of Naoto now. There sure must be some changes in behavior and treatment now.

P.S. And wow, I never noticed how thick Naoto's shoes sole was! Just how small is she? Because even with those shoes she still is smaller than majority.

This was the first time I noticed the soles as well. It's probably the first time we've had a clear close-up of them. In hindsight, they were most likely meant as a hint.

Also the hat. No guy that dresses like a teen wears stuff like that.
