EU LGBT poll on homophobia sparks concern
Quote:
The Hague (May 17, Fri): A quarter of gay people surveyed in a major European Union survey say they have been subjected to attacks or violent threats in the past five years.

Poorer and younger respondents were more likely to face discrimination due to their sexuality, the poll found.

The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency surveyed 93,000 people in the EU and Croatia for what it calls the most comprehensive survey of its kind.

The EU LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Survey shows some worrying trends. Among other things, it found that some 26 per cent of respondents (and 35 per cent of transgender respondents) said they had been attacked or threatened with violence in the past five years.

Of greater concern, more than half of those who said they had been attacked did not report the incident to the authorities, as they believed that no action would be taken.

Topless protest disrupts opening of Barbie house in Berlin
Quote:
Berlin (May 17, Fri): Women's rights protesters disrupted the opening of a giant pink doll's house in Berlin yesterday, saying the Barbie "Dreamhouse Experience" objectified women.

Promoting the doll made by Mattel Inc, the house allows paying visitors to try on Barbie's clothes, play in her kitchen and have a go on her pink piano. The exhibition will be open until Aug 25.

A handful of protesters gathered outside the shocking pink house that has been erected in one of central Berlin's greyest areas.

A topless woman, a member of the Femen protest group, who had the slogan "Life in plastic is not fantastic" scrawled across her chest, set fire to a Barbie doll tied to a mini crucifix.

"We're protesting because Barbie would not be able to survive with her figure and yet she is an idol for many girls and that's not healthy," said Ms Stevie Meriel Schmiedel, a founding member of the "Pink Stinks" protest group.

Mr Christoph Rahofer, chief executive of Event Marketing Services, which organised the exhibition, said the Dreamhouse Experience was a positive thing. "It's basically about playing, being amazed and discovering — there's lots of hidden things to be found and it's an interactive exhibition."

I am not saying anything wrong with the content of the AFP article, but they misrepresent the fact this man is a real leader within the Chinese military.

Intro from the interviewer- 今天来到演播间参与讨论的是 中国战略文化促进会常务副会长兼秘书长 罗援少将,欢迎您,罗少将。

Which translate (Via google)

Came to the studio today to participate in the discussion of the China Council for the Promotion of Strategic Culture Executive Vice President and Secretary General Major General Luo Yuan, to welcome you, Major General Luo.

He is really no different than one of those retired general/paid contributor type of personality, and I point out where he work out of is sort of a military university, like a military scholar of some kind. It is like Donald Rumfield rushing on Fox saying Iraq is historically part of United States or something. Actually, he would be worse than Rumfield since he have no real military credentials.

People freak out and see a 2 Star General but that is an empty rank as far as policy power is concerned...but of course AFP had to spin him into a major general to make a juicy story.

I would point out that the interview was carried on www.chinanews.com, the website of the China News Service, the second-largest state-owned news agency in China after Xinhua. As Xellos-_^ quipped:

Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, in her own words:

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

She was speaking during her visit to Japan last month.

Quote:
Tokyo (Apr 17, Wed): Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi defended her conciliatory political style, saying her focus was on building a more unified society rather than making headlines.

Ms Suu Kyi, visiting Japan this week, said many interviewers have asked her why she does not speak more forcefully about the plight of minority groups in her nation.

She said she has been addressing those issues, albeit in ways that people may consider "boring".

"In fact, I have been speaking all the time about ethnic nationalities. But the point was that my statements were not colourful enough to please everybody," she told a press conference.

"Actually I am not very keen on colourful statements. I am sorry if people do not find my comments interesting enough to acknowledge them.

"But I have been speaking a lot about ethnic nationalities and problems of national reconciliation in our country, except that I speak in a way in which, I suppose, most people consider slightly boring."

The comments came as activists express disappointment that Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate who was locked up for 15 years by Myanmar's then-ruling junta, has remained largely silent about several episodes of communal bloodshed.

At least 43 people were killed in March as mosques and Muslim homes were destroyed in central Myanmar, in a wave of violence that witnesses say appeared to have been well organised.

Look at it this way, Chinese people had to import The Daily Show online because political satire does not exist in China. If you have a big audience in China, the government wants to have control over what you can and cannot say about the country.

I won't belabour the point. After all, Singapore media suffers from the same public perception. It's not what the media chooses to put out; it's the unavoidable fact that, as long as the media is state-owned, it is hard to persuade the public that whatever content it broadcasts has not been approved by Big Brother.

==========

Last one for tonight. The long-anticipated coroner's inquiry into the death of American engineer Shane Todd in Singapore has entered its fifth day. The Singapore authorities continue to provide evidence that strongly dispute allegations of murder and conspiracy by Dr Todd's parents.

The issue was sparked by a Financial Times article published in February this year, and first quoted in this thread by RRW.

Shane Todd's parents essentially imply that Singapore police had been unprofessional and incompetent, missing vital evidence that apparently show that he had been murdered to keep secret highly sensitive research on gallium nitride (GaN) between Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics and China's Huawei. The Chinese company has been deemed by United States lawmakers as a security risk, as it allegedly makes communications equipment that could be used for spying.

At the heart of the investigation is a hard disk that the Todd parents allegedly found in Shane's swanky home in Singapore, and which they claim contains proof of their allegations.

Here's a run-down of the key findings from the coroner's inquiry:

FBI clears up external hard drive mystery
Quote:
Singapore (May 14, Tue): The external hard drive accessed by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) three days after American engineer Shane Todd was found dead in his Singapore apartment in June last year was identical to the one the Todd family handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to examine in March this year, according to a report by the FBI.

At the ongoing coroner's inquiry into Mr Todd's death, the court heard yesterday that the FBI had come to this conclusion after the SPF had officially asked the FBI on March 19 this year to confirm whether the two external hard drives were, in fact, one and the same.

THE BUSINESS TIMES
Shane Todd not an expert on gallium nitride
Quote:
Singapore (May 17, Fri): American researcher Shane Todd was never involved in any sensitive or highly-confidential military and defence-related projects while working for Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics.

This according to four of his colleagues who took the stand on the fifth day of the inquiry into his death.

They testified today that the group he was part of did not have any sensitive research projects with Huawei involving a semiconductor material called Gallium Nitride (GaN). GaN has commercial uses but has potential to be used in military applications.

IME's deputy executive director for research, Dr Patrick Lo, said there were meetings between IME and Huawei.

He said that these meetings and preliminary talks were about a possible collaboration between the IME's GaN research group and Huawei on a potential commercial product called a GaN amplifier, and also for Huawei to understand the capabilities of the GaN research group. However, for various reasons, it didn't materialise into an actual project.

Three other colleagues took the stand to give details about their working relationships with Dr Todd.

The court heard that Dr Todd had told his colleagues that transferring to the GaN group was a mistake. He said he had difficulties because his area of expertise was in silicon, and that he lacked knowledge in GaN.

CHANNEL NEWS ASIA
American researcher visited suicide websites
Quote:
Singapore (May 13, Mon): American engineer Shane Todd had searched for suicide-related websites 19 times in the four months leading up to his death, said Senior State Counsel Tai Wei Shyong in his opening statement during the first day of the coroner's inquiry into his death.

After the 31-year-old was found hanged in his apartment near Chinatown on June 24 last year, 19 pills containing Citalopram, an anti-depressant, were also found in his home, a conserved shophouse.

Dr Todd was found dead shortly after he quit the Singapore Institute of Microelectronics, which he had joined in 2010. It was his first job after graduating with a doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

THE STRAITS TIMES
S'pore police explain protocol for handling hanged bodies
Quote:
Singapore (May 17, Fri): Police protocols came under scrutiny by lawyers for the Todd family, who asked repeatedly on Tuesday (May 14) if actions taken at the scene of their son's death had hampered investigations.

First responders to Dr Shane Todd's home had found him hanging from a strap against his bathroom door. They immediately took his body down by cutting above the improvised noose. This is in accordance with standard police procedures, said officers who took the stand today.

They reiterated that it is protocol to bring down a body in a hanging case as the priority is to save a life. They added that this was "common among many established police forces".

Meanwhile:

Tearful father of Shane Todd says family trusts court
Quote:
Singapore (May 17, Fri): A tearful Rick Todd publicly apologised on behalf of his wife who had called the Singapore court system "corrupt" as a much-watched inquiry into the death of their son, an American scientist working on sensitive research, finished its fourth day.

"We'd just seen a lot of pictures of our son – our dead son – and it was a very emotional morning. We're sorry the word 'corrupt' came out, and we have faith in the Singapore court system,” he told reporters.

His wife Mary had called the Singapore court process "corrupt" when speaking to reporters earlier yesterday.

There is so many misstatement it is not even funny. Lets break it down.

1) Daily show have a small following in China. Average hits are few hundred thousand to a couple million, in America on the thedailynews.com, that is huge. In China? 2 min clip of Game of Thrones would eat that hit figure for breakfast.

2) Political Satire exists all the time, it is just subtle. There is political Satire on the Chinese New Year Celebration Show (an annual show that is watched by every Chinese), and it is full of Satire....performed in front of the Premier and major party leaders. They don't hit CCP directly, but they criticize social issues to show how the CCP has failed.

Quote:

And Government often fail in that regard. The man is a princeling, his Dad was a legend in the PLA. Plus, what he say isn't exactly subversive (I.E nationalist policy wa wa). So China can't touch him. But his hot air is quite different than say, the joint chief of staff or the Direct Commander of the PLA.

Of course, the Western Media couldn't be bothered to figure out a Armchair professor with a rank is different than a live general . But whatever...

The question would be, why would the Western media know anything particular about that general other than his rank and title?

Because it is in the interview it self?

I mean seriously, if you are Japanese, would you howl in rage if that crazy loon mayor who said sex slavery is acceptable is called "a senior member of the Japanese government" by the international press?

Osaka Mayor is a bit more explicit than a member of the Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences. That almost sounds like West Point to most people in the US, and thus directly related to military policies.

Of course, that doesn't excuse the lack of due diligence.

Commuter train collision in Connecticut, on one of the country's busiest rail lines.

Wow, that sucks. No one's dead fortunately, but it looks like part of the Northeast Corridor may be shut down while they clean this up. For those of you outside America, the NE Corridor is like Amtrak (the national passenger rail system)'s jugular vein. I've ridden that line several times to and from New York.

This has gotta be the most hilarious political scandal in the past few weeks. Ford has so little self control that he's turned his city into a laughing stock.

Wonder what comes next...

WH Benghazi emails have different quotes than earlier reported

Quote:
CBS News) WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama called Thursday for tighter security for U.S. diplomatic facilities to prevent an attack like the one in Benghazi, Libya, last year that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

The Benghazi attack is a political controversy. Republicans claim the administration watered down the facts in talking points given to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for television appearances while Obama was running for re-election. Republicans on Capitol Hill claimed they found proof in White House emails that they leaked to reporters last week. It turns out some of the quotes were wrong.
