Given my love for Strike Witches (anime-wise, the first series,) I'm looking for some shows that are similar to it.

And no, I don't mean shows that have pantless girls crammed into it (which is what people have in mind, disregarding any other important elements that made it good IMO.) What I tend to look for in it are the following:

Great character designs (moe character designs specifically)
Good characterization
Storyline that is character oriented
Action scenes are a plus
While not really too necessary, fanservice is a plus. Though I wouldn't mind it being ecchi oriented as long as the character designs are good.

At the same time, I do not want:

Anything that has AIC as the production company
Shows that tend to overdo it

To avoid jumping to conclusions I have watched:
Strike Witches I believe I'm looking for something similar to it, since it's my favorite.
Sky Girls (which was meh.)
Strike Witches 2 (which sucked IMO.)
IS: Infinite Stratos (which isn't as good as people say it is.)

Sky Girls? It certainly is similar in that they're young girls that participate in the military using flying weapons/machines.

Well... yeah Mahou Senki Lyrical Nanoha is as close as you can get. The first two seasons are great, third season YMMV.

I've only watched first season, but I never got to finished. Looks like I give both of these seasons a go. Thanks for the recommendations.

Oh man, you missed out. Nanoha A's (season two) is the best of all three.
