You can fight with a knife but how many rookies will be willing to do that at the risk of being bitten by a roach or a rat and incur extra costs of antidote and probably a healing potion as well.
The warrior will probably do low damage if he slashes with the knife on the rat/roach and stabbing with the knife can incur the very problem he had with the sword and probably at a higher risk.
Just look at the number of bashes he needs with a club. He may likely need a similar number of heavy stabs with the knife.

There are giant animals though, a close enough second.

I'd say a knife has a much higher chance of glancing off the chitinous carapace of an insect or getting caught in the teeth of a rodent. With an increased chance of failing to attack, the knife as a weapon is a poor option. Throwing knives could work, but they are considerably heavier than arrows, and more expensive as well.

To be fair, Indonesia seems to have it's fair share of pythons that like to eat people whole (granted that's what pythons do).

Australia also has a very active salt-water crocodile population (and some of them get stupidly large).

Plus he was outnumbered so tangling with one isn't advisable.

then as expected the BPO received a complaint about what happened in ep 1, but apparently other people argued that everything was fine since the scene passed late at night or that this scene justified the extermination of all goblins.

well, since I'm not sure, can anyone tell if it's right?

The committee acknowledged that, while this scene had strong sexual violence implication, it was there to establish the premise of the series (as in, monster extermination), and the time slot was also taken in consideration, so they believe it could be tolerated.

The complaints were different between Japanese and Westerners. While a common complaint between both sides was that "the scene was quite unpleasant", the other complaint filed to the BPO was that "that show might have a bad influence on young audience", which is why they discarded that notion by mentioning the time slot.

Meanwhile, westerners had a very different context: CR didn't properly rate the series and left a PG rating (which is like 7 years old+). But then again, a lot of those complaints claim that scene is basically a testimony of "rape culture", so I'm pretty sure a proper rating wouldn't have changed anything for those persons.

Well, it's the same staff that told Japanese audiences that their kids shouldn't even be up watching and if they are, it's the parents' faults.

The Westerners' reactions to that scene are mostly on the fault of western broadcasters/streamers who didnt properly rate the show. And watchers who didnt hear the warnings from LN and manga readers, and perhaps expected a casual fantasy trip. Now here we are beating that dead horse, over, over, over, over and over again.

GS airing late at night is probably what lent a bigger weight to BPO letting it side more than anything else. I don't know about LN and manga but rest of the series has been relatively tame so far at least for violence and there hasn't been any blunt depiction of rape since episode 1 so that might be a factor too.

I was already warned about the nature of this story, to a small effect, due to an article on Sankaku Complex about the Manga's graphic nature of certain scenes.
But not everyone ends up getting news about this and that out of thin air, so...

LG-Max brought up the Western reaction so you can blame him. XP

As a LN reader, I didn't like the way they portrayed Witch. The anime visuals doesn't make her justice and her way of talking does not make her hot, at least to a westerner.

I just hope that they portray Sword Maiden right. Who I'm kidding, they mostly likely won't.
