Nanoha sat on her bed and picked up the large stuffed bear known as Etaf. Holding it out at arm's length, she observed it. Soft fur that had seen many hugs, a worn spot on it's head where her tears had trailed whenever she had to cry, and a few stitches from where Vivio's childlike nature had caused it accidental harm.

As she fell back on her mattress, she took the bear with her and held it above her head. She looked at it's marble eyes that were tinted a slight crimson and the nose that was once hard and stiff but now soft. Her body turned on it's side and she sat down Etaf for a moment and pondered exactly what her relationship was with the blond that graced the bear with the backwards name.

The teen stared for a long moment before smiling with her standard slight tint on her cheeks. A human nose touched stuffed bear's and an Eskimo kiss was given. She had always done her best thinking when in the presence of the bear. From her new training exercises, to what to wear, and even listening to her vented troubles. When Vivio joined the military, when her daughter went on her first solo mission, Etaf had always been there for her. Offering a soft head to rest her chin on and a warm body to hug in her lap.

When Vivio dropped the bomb that she was dating Syn, the bear listened to her protest about the girl being too young and everything else that went with it. It's ears took in everything that the brown haired girl could say, and silently offered it's comfort over the years. Now, as she laid on the bed, Nanoha gave a soft smile to the bear and knew exactly why it was so special to her.

The door to her house opened and Fate's voice called out, requesting Nanoha's presence at a meeting with Hayate about some merger with the local police team, and perhaps a bite to eat while they were out. As Nanoha went to the door to turn out the lights of her room, she looked at the teddy bear patiently waiting for her return and held up a single finger to her lips. "Shhhhhh...."

“Umm well umm… Grass Shots.”

“I heard you the first time. What the hell is it?”

“It is a juice made out of grass. It is said to be good for your heath. I heard about it at the spa the other day. I though you might have heard about it from somewhere?”

The blond collapsed back down on the couch and continued to watch TV. “I think people who drink that are about as sane as those that rave about ‘Spring Mix’. Shit, it they want that stuff so bad I could just bag the clippings and…” Fate sat back up and turned her head at Nanoha with a big grin on her lips.

“Wa What?” Princess dropped her sponge

“I see it now, our ticket to riches! We start selling grass shots on the side. It wouldn’t be that much trouble, just scrape the junk off the bottom of the mowers into a can and… make juice out of it. The dumb yuppie idiots, not you Princess, wouldn’t know any better.”

Nanoha only rolled her eyes and went back to cleaning the blond’s kitchen.

“Yeah… I sooo got to tell Chrono this one.”

This mini-series was inspired by the doujin BetrayerS. Regrettably, the author has made his intention known that the doujin will not be continued in the forseeable It takes the doujin's contents released as its Prologue.

Chapter 1, Scene 1

Sunday morning, Monarch Church. Kha was at the foot of the altar, the morning service the most eerily lonely as it could ever get.

The Grey Knight's heart was in a turmoil unbefitting of his class, and he knew it. But there was no assuaging his guilt, not when a very close comrade has volunteered not only to die, but to have her name stained for all eternity, and all he could do was to step aside...

"I object!" Kha rose to his feet. "I cannot agree to this ludicrious plan! Even though the TSAB has failed us, we do not have to stoop to such tactics in order to bring about change!"

"I am with him on this," Sophia followed. "How do you expect me to let my own flesh and blood take the fall in such a manner?!"

"Well then, how do you propose we go about this?"

"How about the person who first came up with it?" Sophia faced sharply at her mentor and idol, never feeling ever more sick than now. "Kia-sama, I am gravely disappointed for you to have come up with this profane plan, and yet not volunteer to spearhead this yourself!"

The High Marshal merely raised her hands in mock surrender. "I'd love to take credit for this elegant scheme of things, but apparently..."

"...I did, Rin-nee," Hayate intoned, standing resolute by her scrolling panels of simulated scenarios. "This is what I chose."

Kha's eyes widened with shock. "No way..."

Sophia glanced to Kia, then to her sister, and laughed a twisted laugh. "Oh is that so? Is that how it is? You expect me to accept this proposal, just because you came up with it? Is that how low you think of me, Hayate?"

The younger Yagami could only return her older siblings ravening with a solemn silence.

"Is that how heartless you think I am, Hayate?!"

"ANSWER ME!!!"

Kha ended his prayer with a long drawn-out breath, and gazed up at the cross. He would've moved. He would've veto'd. As Grand Meister of Celestial Being, he had that power. But his blade was stayed by a finger of a seven-year-old...

Kha remembered how Vivio tugged on his trouser leg and told him to stand down. He wanted to believe that the little girl was just naive, that she was just looking at it too simply. He tried to reason with her, tell her what risks that Hayate was taking, make her see that it was just too great...

"Kha-nii, I understand very well what this means, and I also dun wan Hayate-nee to be placed in such danger... But there is no way. Every one of the Church Council cannot do this, only Hayate-nee... P-politics. Politics desu."

Politics. Vivio understood what politics meant?

She then smiled brightly. "Kia-san told me that she had a plan to right everything eventually. Hayate-nee will be remembered a heroine!"

Kha struggled to find any more words, but his respect of the Kaiser's memories, even if they but flickered for a moment in Vivio, held his tongue.

"Kha-nii, you do trust your mama, deshou?"

At the way her innocent smile contradicted the force of her words, he could only hold his head in dismay...

But that was long past now. It has been a fortnight since Hayate began her suicidal campaign. So far, everything is on schedule. The TSAB has not made any hostile action against Belka despite them closing their borders once the coup d’etat took place. Kha has been working to evacuation the city, and most of it is already deserted, hence why the lack of a Sunday service. Still, Kha couldn’t help but worry…

"Meister," said a voice behind him.

"Ah, Saber," Kha greeted as he turned around to his blue-armored Servant.

"Erm..." The blonde haired warrior begin uneasily. "The preparations at the perimeter are complete. The Cleric-Knights will spring in at first sign of hostilities, and as you instructed, I have as many Terminators and Portal Strike as possible waiting in the wings.

"We have the Saint Guard and Adeptae Belkarum on high alert at all borders with Bureau territory, and evacuation of the civilians is progressing steadily. But it’s hard to get them to move when they don’t have the will to depart.”

Kha nodded grimly. “This is our holy city after all… To think we’re going to just throw her away…”

Saber just shook her head. “It can’t be helped… Belka is densely populated. An open conflict will put too many lives in jeopardy, and this declaration will definitely create chaos.”

“So, would you do the same?”

“Pardon?”

Kha approached his powered-down suit of Terminator armor, then looked to his companion. “Would you do as Vivio did, order Hayate to kill herself?”

Saber bit her lip. “That would be putting it too strongly, Meister. But…”

She looked him in the eyes. “Yes, I will have done the same. I can see why it’s the only way, and I’m sure you see that way as well…”

Kha’s heart sank. Her words rang with a truth that he tried to deny, a truth long calculated by the analytical side he had been blessed with by his famed mother. Knowing that, it still did not remove the heaviness that sat on his heart and threatened to crush any hope of a desirable outcome to this unnecessary conflict.

Reluctantly, his hand touch a panel on the suit, and the machine unfurled. What a long week this has been…

“Also…”

The Grand Meister stopped. “Also?”

“…I have once made such an order myself.” Her voice quivered with a foreign sadness as she spoke, one that Kha could not recognize nor expect.

The Grand Meister looked at his Servant quizzedly. “I beg your--?”

With that, a Justicar already in the chapter’s grey Knight Armor burst upon the pew. “Sir Kha! The declaration! Premier Carym is making the declaration!”

“Roger that, my brother,” Kha answered as he tapped air, calling up a video screen of a live broadcast of the paladin making her earth-shaking announcement. “Justicar Lawrence, have you cleared the command room?”

“Yes, mein Meister,” the Knight affirmed quickly. “My men have already departed and I was to join them in our transport. This reached the airwaves just as I passed, and thought I'd let Meister know.”

“Thank you for your concern,” Kha stepped into his armor, and it began to close around him. “Hurry now, my Brother. We have work to do. Saber.”

“Right away, mein Meister.” The woman saluted, then tramped down the aisle, throwing the massive oaken doors aside.

[Standby. Ready.] Chimed the Terminator armor Grade “00” as hisses and clunks bolted the steel coffin armor into place. Kha wiggled the conical warp drives fixed to sponsons on his backpack, flexed his robotic arms and fingers, then as he gazed into his right, gathered his focus into it and crushed it into a ball.

Now, it was no longer time for regrets.

[Flight test complete, mein Meister.]

Kha nodded, then marched after Saber, striding through the cool interior of Monarch Church. With each whirring step, Kha silently counted and saluted the twenty two painted glass panels that lined the hall. The twenty two Primarchs of Ancient Belka now watched mutely as their distant son made his final progression from peace to war. Kha wondered, were they watching with pride, or heaving sighs of sadness? Would they see this backslide as their children's folly, or a cry of triumph, of Belka returning to her rightful place in a burning world?

Kha stepped out into the sunlight, and surveyed the blue box-like armored vehicles now clogging the driveway that once only saw sedans and SUVs on a Sunday morning like today. Saber closed the Church doors gently, and uttered a small prayer to bless their spiritual home in their absence. Further down, the last Knight-sister boarded a Rhino, and it rumbled to life. One after another, the plated chariots coughed and roared as long-unused motors ground to speed. Down below, Kha could see a massive, grey, and well-adorned Landraider from his Chapter trundle down the sloped road.

“Sir!”

Kha looked back and returned the convoy commander’s salute as Saber came to stand by him. “Light be with you, good sister!”

“And so with you, mein Meister!” She yelled over the rumble of her craft, then sank lower into her perch as the Rhino revved and accelerated around the fountain centering the driveway. Kha maintained his salute for the convoy as it rolled by, each vehicle's sergeants acknowledging with respect. For a second, Kha felt a small, almost obscene, flicker of pride.

In all cases, Belka shall not fall.

“What is the meaning of this, Chancellor Jeremiah?!” Hayate barked as she slapped a scramble order onto the tall man’s desk. “I clearly said that there was to be no attacks on the Belka SAR, not until we have ascertained for sure that they are hostile!”

“But our tacticians ruled against you, General,” the blond dai Mazda replied calmly. “The Saint’s Union is clearly a threat to TSAB, and while it has been announced, it still does not have the power to threaten us. We must strike now and repel the aggressors from our planet so that they do not have a foothold on our doorstep. Furthermore…”

Jeremiah called up another document, the Belka Declaration of Self-Government, highlight a section as he spoke, “…by taking up arms without prior TSAB approval, and openly engaging TSAB forces on other worlds, the SAR has contravened the Declaration, rendering it null and void. The Bureau has the right to retrieve this piece of land.”

Hayate clenched her fist. “But to react this quickly…”

“Only a fool will not notice something is going on when Belka closed its borders with the rest of Midchilda, Hayate-kun,” smirked Jeremiah. “And I also know that you are affiliated to the Church. One of the last 3 Ancient Belka practitioners, no?”

He leaned closer with a grin that made Hayate sick. “Need I remind you, that even after what you’ve done, your loyalty to the Bureau is still just as questionable as any Belka operative we have here.”

The General gritted her teeth.

There came a roar of afterburners, a scream of missiles, followed by a series of dull boom that made the church creak. Almost simultaneously, loud reports of bolter fire and thuds of Belka artillery rang out in waves across the ghost town, interspersed with the fizzes of bombardment spells.

“By the Light!” Kha scattered particles and hurtled skywards. “They’re attacking already?!”

Well-drilled protocol kicked in; with shouts of “Go! Go! Go!” the Knight-Sisters grabbed onto pintle-mounted boltguns; the armored personnel carriers now threw it up to top gear and raced away. Thunderhawk helicopters and Landspeeder hovercraft buzzed past towards the sign of trouble. The white-and-blue VF-27 Frostwyrm fighters screamed to engage the Bureau’s Firehawks. Saber joined her Master in the air, and so did a squad of four heavily-armored Terminator Cleric-Knights, drawing blue and red contrails in their wake as they flew at a plume of dust rising from a street some clicks away. Already, he could make out faint black dots of elite Bureau aerials Aces dropping in for a visit.

“Strike from the skies, my brothers!” Kha roared over the psycommu network and glared at the fighters thundering into Belka airspace.

If war is what you want, then war is what you get!

Grand Meister Kha raised his device, then fell at the aggressors.

“ZIEG BELKAAA!!!”

I'm sorry, I think I got carried away with trying to make an epic opening and completely forgot that I wasn't playing Company of Heroes but writing a magical girl story...

This is a fic that will feature OCs along with CCs, for the magnitude of this conflict will leave no stone untouched. Vivio and Syn are almost central to this conflict, so stayed tuned, for they are coming up next!

Before I read comment I'd like to request you give links to OC profiles as here in the FFT we're not up to date on your characters (Okay i am but not all of us Hang out in the OCT as well)

I wanted to develop them as they go along so you won't be lost. Unless they are main characters, which means they have some outdated profile somewhere...

And... unfortunately, Kha's and Saber's profiles are hosted on megaupload, and they have expired! D: I'm going to get it online and post it back up, so in the mean time, feel free to read. I'll handle queries as I go along

I just suddenly had this inspiration to write...

The day had finally come. It was a day she both feared and longed for. A mix of emotions danced within her beating chest as she stared at her reflection in the mirror before her. Months upon months of painstaking work and stress had led up to this day. Arguments, clashing opinions, and heated words were exchanged between all involved but they made it. Even with the last minute changes everything was...perfect.

Even though she had yet to venture from this room, she knew the guests had long since arrived. Friends were reunited and new friendships were forged. Everyone was dressed in their best for this day. Yes, everything was perfect.

Sparkling eyes full of life stared back at her in the mirror. Hours, much more than she would have liked, of makeup and hair styling stood before her. The dress she was adorned in seemed to shimmer in the afternoon sunlight. Sometimes she didn't want to remember those long hours going from store to store to pick out the right one. Other times she couldn't help but look back and smile to herself as she was pulled along by her friends at the arrays of gorgeous gowns. She looked herself over in the mirror one last time. Perfect.

The sound of people hustling by outside the closed door told her that it was nearly time. Her eyes wanders around the room again, making sure that she has what she needed. A small table in the corner caught her eye. How could it not? She had placed it there after all. As she stared, a new feeling welled up inside her. The steadily building moisture threatened to ruin the perfect makeup she wore. No, she realized, everything was not perfect.

In the eyes of others everything about today, all the preparations were perfect. But to her...there was still something missing. There was only one thing that would truly make this day perfect. Something that could never be. For many sleepless nights she pondered if, maybe, it was possible. That she was merely limiting herself and what could be done if she merely talked to the right people. The plan slowly formed in her head. With each time making seem more and more like a possibility. And as it neared perfection, she stopped. It was at those times that she would cry. Not because she wasn't able to go through with her plan, but for even considering such a thing in the first place.It was at those times she had to understand that not everything could be perfect.

"Vivio, are you ready?"

The call of her name and knock on the door snapped the young lady out of her trance. "A-ah, yes. I'll be out in a moment."

"Alright. And don't you get cold feet. I wouldn't want to have to send the entire TSAB out to chase after you on your wedding day."

The fleeting footsteps told the blond that the elder woman had left. Her hand went to the door handle...and stopped. It felt as if she had forgotten something. Something important. She turned towards the small table again, a small smile forming on her lips.

"Wish me luck, ne Nanoha-mama, Fate-mama?"

Two frames sat on the table with the pictures of the late Aces in them. Their silver trim almost seemed to glow at that moment in the sunlight. She held eye contact with the pair for another moment before turning the handle and exiting the room. Now everything was perfect.

The day had finally come. It was a day she both feared and longed for. A mix of emotions danced within her beating chest as she stared at her reflection in the mirror before her. Months upon months of painstaking work and stress had led up to this day. Arguments, clashing opinions, and heated words were exchanged between all involved but they made it. Even with the last minute changes everything was...perfect.

Even though she had yet to venture from this room, she knew the guests had long since arrived. Friends were reunited and new friendships were forged. Everyone was dressed in their best for this day. Yes, everything was perfect.

Sparkling eyes full of life stared back at her in the mirror. Hours, much more than she would have liked, of makeup and hair styling stood before her. The dress she was adorned in seemed to shimmer in the afternoon sunlight. Sometimes she didn't want to remember those long hours going from store to store to pick out the right one. Other times she couldn't help but look back and smile to herself as she was pulled along by her friends at the arrays of gorgeous gowns. She looked herself over in the mirror one last time. Perfect.

The sound of people hustling by outside the closed door told her that it was nearly time. Her eyes wanders around the room again, making sure that she has what she needed. A small table in the corner caught her eye. How could it not? She had placed it there after all. As she stared, a new feeling welled up inside her. The steadily building moisture threatened to ruin the perfect makeup she wore. No, she realized, everything was not perfect.

In the eyes of others everything about today, all the preparations were perfect. But to her...there was still something missing. There was only one thing that would truly make this day perfect. Something that could never be. For many sleepless nights she pondered if, maybe, it was possible. That she was merely limiting herself and what could be done if she merely talked to the right people. The plan slowly formed in her head. With each time making seem more and more like a possibility. And as it neared perfection, she stopped. It was at those times that she would cry. Not because she wasn't able to go through with her plan, but for even considering such a thing in the first place.It was at those times she had to understand that not everything could be perfect.

"Vivio, are you ready?"

The call of her name and knock on the door snapped the young lady out of her trance. "A-ah, yes. I'll be out in a moment."

"Alright. And don't you get cold feet. I wouldn't want to have to send the entire TSAB out to chase after you on your wedding day."

“You look beautiful,” Zafira’s words weren’t quite enough to describe her. The awe in his eyes, just barely hiding the pride there, was much better at describing it. He straightened his own tie and fixed his suit coat.

Vivio blushed, the red standing out as the darkest color on her, “honestly Zafira.”

“Zafira?” he cocked an eyebrow. “How impersonal.”

She fidgeted, “well since this is such a formal event and all so I just thought…” Vivio trailed off.

He placed a giant hand on her shoulder, “Vivio. I’ve known you since you were five. I’ve been thrown up on, had my hair tugged out, been dressed up and even used as a tissue. As you grew up I was used to intimidate your dates, as an excuse when you really wanted to leave someplace and you chauffeur. Hearing Zafira come out of your mouth feels more foreign then anything in the world.”

Vivio giggled, Zafira’s speech had eased her nerves, “For someone who doesn’t speak much you sure monologue a lot.”

Zafira shrugged. “Only when it’s needed.” His ears perked as the tell tale music started up.

Vivio gulped.

“Now I want you to know I will always be here for you, no matter what,” he slowly flipped the thin veil over her face. “Not that you’ll need me.” He offered his arm.

Vivio slipped her arm through his. “Thank you.”

He faltered for one moment as he held the door knob. “For what?”

“For everything.” Together they opened the door and Zafira led Vivio into the next part of her life, the part he couldn’t follow her into, although as he had led her through the first part.

“Ready?” He whispered into her ear.

The determination in her eyes was enough for him, he’d trained her well, and maybe just maybe she was going to be okay. Not that it mattered, he’d always be there, they’d always be there. After all, she was their little girl.

:O I thought it was another NanoFate-ness wedding. Oddly, I imagined that Nanoha was getting married to Yuuno and she was plotting how to switch Yuuno with Fate...

But I agree, poor Vivio. She's an orphan almost as often as... well... there are grave scenes with either Nanoha or Fate.
