I think at the end she would reveal that it wasn't her "powers" or anything like that, that gave him a moment of sight, but rather himself. I think they are going to enthisise on him putting more effort into his personality due to what happened in the past (if that is the case). He has the sight all along and now its a matter of getting rid of his phobia - sight. Otoha could offer words of encouragement but I don't think she is using any special powers to make his see.

Hmm... I think it's something a bit more than that. She did say "gift" -- well, "present" in English, in fact. Basically, that as a spirit she was giving him a little present for a while, and that how he'd use it would be up to him (21:35 - 21:48). I think the rest of what you're saying makes sense -- that ultimately it isn't a physical problem but more of a pychological one (since he told her earlier that he'd been blind "ever since that day"). But I think the show definitely wants you to believe, at least, that Otoha has real powers, even if all she's really doing is just pushing him forward a bit.

Well now, i had a bit of expectations towards this show, and i can say that episode 1 has surely met them.

Nothing like kick-starting your attention with something you don't expect huh ... and this is exactly what the start did. Never would have imagined they would flat out beat up Hayami. If this is how she gets treated in school, no wonder the girl hasn't the most of cheerful personalities.

Yui has managed to claw a hole in the ceiling of my patience already though. Not only is her personality something i hate by default, the fact she is behind the bullying of Hayami does not help her any in this regard. My initial impression of this spoiled brat is: if she would fall and break a leg (or two), i would not be the one weeping after her.

Hinata i am liking the best thus far Kind and somewhat clumsy, definitely someone you wouldn't mind having around. And heh - she presented Takuma with the biggest panty shot in anie, but the guy is in no position to appreciate the gesture The part with Hinata and her grandfather (it seems her family is fairly wealthy given how the house looked) leaves me wondering though ... he asked about him, and she looked distant/sad ... i have to wonder why, unless it was tied to the incident in school. My immediate thought was "arranged marriage or something ?", but that makes little to no sense given the setting. Oh well, we shall see.

It seems the anime is trying hard to present Otoha as a normal person. It seems she is a spirit of sorts, and she seems to be looking out for Takuma. Question is: why ? Given the nightmare Takuma had, i assume his blindness might indeed be more of a psychological trauma. Most likely assumption is that he saw someone (close to him?) die in front of him, and has been incapable of opening his eyes since then. Could Otoha be somehow related to that accident. Or better yet - a ghost of the person that died. Or i might be jumping the gun with these speculations

Otoha "granting" Takuma eyesight at the end was unexpected ... i have to wonder what the students at school are going to think - somehow i get the feeling most will assume he faked it, leading to some possible trouble. Since his current eyesight is likely just temporary, it might lead to even more problems when he becomes blind again - people would not believe it. Never the less - concept of a blind protagonist is a refreshing change, so i am looking towards to how the story unfolds.

As for the romance possibilities ... i am not expecting anything else than Hayami in the end. Will just have to hope Hinata does not experience too much of a heartbreak over it, provided she does show some interest in him.

A very busy episode, providing a lot of information to chew upon. Can't say it rocked my soul, but it has the potential to be quite good it seems. Definitely looking towards the next episode.

Because everyone (almost anyways) hates her, they call her "cockroach", and she has a bad reputation.
And they're Yui's goons, so they listen to her, and they themselves obviously don't care about beating girls up.

If you look at Hinata as a character, I think they're showing her to be the sort of person who doesn't question authority; she's almost the picture-perfect "good girl" (class rep, proper, assumably good grades, tries to help out, does what she's told, etc.). The way she didn't stand up for Hayami seems like an example of that (even though it troubles her, she thinks "it's better if we don't [interfere]..."), along with her sadness when talking about Takuma with her grandfather. I assume that Takuma's role -- thanks to his newfound boldness -- is going to be to help her find the courage to do something about the things she doesn't agree with, rather than just conforming to the "collective will". And as you speculate, whatever it is her family has to do with Takuma is probably one of those areas she's going to have to stand up against. So as much as I agree that, romantically, Takuma's going to end up with Hayami, it seems like Hinata's going to be just as important, I think.

Indeed, she does seems like someone who doesn't question authority, but it is also very situation dependent i think. The case with her grandfather is too much in the dark to speculate about, so i will focus on the other issue - the bullies. Sadly, such a situation is all too common. People simply don't care, and those few who care (i assume Hinata in this case) are too scared to actually do anything. There is the thinking one might be incapable of actually doing anything even if he speaks up (which might be true), and then there is the fear of becoming the "target" as well. I assume this is why Hinata held Takuma back - it is probably far from first time she has witnessed this, so she was probably trying to prevent Takumi from pushing himself in the spotlight, which might make him a potential target as well. Though i guess this proves your point

But indeed - if she is going to find the courage to stand up on her own, no doubt Takumi is going to be a big part of it. Though her problems at this moment are too much in the dark to make anything but wild guesses, so i guess we will have to wait for more episodes. This show has left a rather good impression on me, so i am waiting rather eagerly

I watched the raw in my office (since no one else is around, I think it's ok?), but the streaming was horrible, so I did not get a very good understanding of the whole episode. I might download the raw and watch it again later.

Since she told Takuma that she hated her family name, I think this had to be related to her family. Maybe her family had done something really bad (or considered so) to the village. Pretty much like the Hojo family in Higurashi.

The moment I watched the opening I went "Ah". Seeing it as the subtitle of this show, I'm guessing the story itself will have something to do with the famous line of the poem "The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you."

You know, it's funny you mention that. I didn't catch that at first, but that makes a whole lot of sense. I was thinking that the whole thing with Otoha had a very Christian sort of influence (her little "Don't you have faith in me? Open your eyes!" bit helped...). Now, of course, I'm sure the influence is not very deep (as not many Japanese are that well versed in Christianity or anything), but that's very interesting. (Of course, there's a certain irony that a Christian poem helped inspire an ero-game... )

Yea I think they might not of thought things through when it comes to picking a title for the game/anime. The fact that I don't see how the overall story would connect with that one poem questions the relevance of the title... Titles are used to highlight the themes or plot of a show and hence one that doesn't feel to have any relevance to the anime/game makes me wonder if they just picked it because it sounds good.

Apart from what Relentless mentioned, i don't see how this whole footprints in the sand would connect with the plot or theme of this show....

Erm, they started out the anime by reading out the poem (in Japanese, of course) but leaving out only the last line, so I don't think the subtitle is random, if not far from it.

Wow...and I thought I was the only one who has heard of that poem...in fact it is hanging on in my mum's bedroom wall XD

Like with most titles it should connect well with the theme...don't be so harsh with it yet holyman282 seen as it's only ep 1

Will agree with most that this series knows how to make an impression to start things off. The whole situation with Hayami leaves me really curious about what is going on with that school and what happened in the past to create such a situation. Of course tossing in me not being happy with those thugs.

Suppose they will take some time to reveal just what happened. Whatever happened it was something Hayami didn't want brought up to Takuma preferring to get the beating over with.

Not a bad lead so far either. A good guy that while not knowing the specifics behind what's been going on still gets involved. Plus some interesting times surrounding Hinata and her 'service' so far .

Soul is doing fine, but have to say we got off to a fine start.

I’m very impressed by the first episode. I didn’t quite expect the show to have some kind of depth besides the premise of being a harem at first glance. The hints for supernatural events taking place in the story add an extra spice to the overall plot without disturbing the Slice-of-Life/drama feel. I’m surprised also that the story actually has a theme, especially one that is related to the condition/background of the 2 (?) main characters. The show has a strong potential and I’m curious to know how is this going to be laid out in relation to the title and the small segment at the beginning (this part was well executed with the visuals, the music and the lines directed to God). The backgrounds were beautiful and they reminded me a lot of Air TV, but without the same level of animation. My only complaint would be the relatively few ‘fan-service’ gags that didn’t fit quite well; otherwise, it was a very enjoyable first episode with potential for great and perhaps meaningful drama.
