There were never really 2 separate Rena's running around. If you'll recall, Rena overheard the cops in the junkyard saying that they had received a tip that someone matching Rena's description was somewhere else. The tip was just that, hearsay. As you have learned from a little later in the episode from Keiichi's confrontation, Mion had the Yakuza move Rina and Teppei's bodies (likely disposing of them in the Sonozaki well), as well as would provide legal defense for Rena (as shown in the scene with Mion and Oiishi). As such, it makes sense that Mion could have the Yakuza mislead the police away from the junkyard (remember, Mion is Rena's best friend, so of course she knows where Rena would most likely hide out). It just so happens that Rena is already L3-4 unstable from dealing with Miyo and the Yamainu, so of course she takes what the police have been saying (2 Rena's / Zombie Miyo) at face value. It's similar to the maggots seen in her blood in episodes 25 and 26. No one freaks out about them because they were never really there to begin with.


In summation, there's nothing world-warping in this arc, Rika and Hanyuu have nothing to do with it.

公由 夏美
自分自身無自覚ながら雛見沢症候群を発症し、家族全員を惨殺する。その時の記憶を母・春子が犯行を主導した かのように記憶していた。事件の真相が判明した後、病院で見舞いに来た暁を包丁で刺すが未遂に 終わる。
後日談では一連の事件については心神喪失で無罪とされたらしく、親戚筋に引き取られた。後に暁 と結婚、「 藤堂夏美 」となる。現在は病院に定期的に診察を受けながら暮らしている。事件当時の記憶を失い、自分の家族を殺した のは藤堂暁だと教えられ生きる目的をもらっているが、実際は事件の真相などを理解しており、暁の人生をめち ゃくちゃにしてしまったことを後悔し、また同じような悲劇を繰り返さないように生きている。
「染伝し編」でもやはり雛見沢症候群を発症し、家族全員を惨殺するが、その後症候群が末期を迎えてしまい、 最後は暁の目の前で狂乱状態に陥ったまま喉を掻き毟り、そのまま息絶えた。

実は本名は「南井ともえ」（名前がひらがな表記）。警察官になる際に父親が希望していた漢字の名前に変えた 。

ハィ＝リューン・イェアソムール・ジェダ

陸の死後、村の外から園崎家に嫁入りしてきた女性であり、とある宿場町の任侠の親分の一人娘。

Season 1 goes for 26 episodes. There is an OVA called Nekogoroshi-hen that takes place between seasons 1 and 2. The second season, Higurashi Kai is additional 24. The third season, Higurashi Rei, is a 5-episode OVA series (it is still very much worth your time to watch at least episodes 2-4).

Overall franchise size: 56 episodes

As you'll find out after all is said and done, there's really no need to continue the story. The final episode of Higurashi (Rei 05) was released late last year. However, the games and manga continue to roll out. Although they are either more detailed versions of the anime arcs that you have/will see or they add more lore to the Higurashi universe, there isn't more to be said about the "timeline" after a certain point.

Spoiler for Episode 11-13 Discussion:

The part about Keiichi being at the festival the entire time is a complete fabrication. The only people who vouched for Keiichi are Mion, Rena, and Rika, the only people who "knew" what was going on and gave Keiichi a cover story. Remember, Mion had talked with Keiichi before the festival, and she noted how Keiichi acted just liked Satoshi did before the aunt's murder. Even though no one had yet noticed Teppei's disappearance, it's safe to assume the Mion had her friend covered. Although this was meant to give Keiichi some peace of mind ("if we keep saying the lie, one day it will eventually become the truth"), it became unsettling to him because the cover story (combined with Satoko's sustained mental trauma) practically erased Keiichi's crime. That's of course problematic because it means that Keiichi would have troubling memories of murdering Teppei without Satoko having any benefit.

As for Satoko and Keiichi, he did simply find Rika at the shrine altar. The line "I couldn't possibly have wished for this" refers to his earlier experiences with Miyo and Irie. Both of them had died, supposedly shortly after Keiichi wished for them to die. Rika was never a target of Keiichi's anger, so it did not make sense to him that she would also be dead. Of course, Satoko doesn't know that. She had been so deeply mentally abused by Teppei that she continued punishing herself, even though Teppei had been gone for days. Hearing that Keiichi had killed him a while ago didn't make sense to Satoko, so seeing Keiichi with an axe over her dead friend made it seem as though it was Keiichi who had gone nuts instead of her.

Also, no one ever dies on the bridge. It's always a really rough fall, but never lethal.

I'm unsure of whether or not the hat itself was meant to be a hint, but let's assume for just a moment that it was. Ooshi mentioned that Rena "went missing" and the hat was recovered in the nearby Gifu mountains. Obviously it's hard to run from an erupting gas leak, and Rena couldn't possibly have ran that far into the mountains fast enough to outpace a gas leak. That means that whatever happened to Rena must have been intentional. At this point, Satoko happened to realize that whoever murdered Rika and chased after her, had also murdered Rena. She also thought about how she could still be alive if everyone in town had died. The shrine and the bridge aren't far from the village, and the gas leak would have reached everywhere in the valley in no time. Realizing that all these events were far too convenient to occur on the same night, Satoko put the pieces together and realized that none of this could have been coincidence. This was no "disaster" but an extermination.

Miyo initially came to Hinamizawa to investigate the theory of Hinamizawa Syndrome, first theorized by her adopted father, Dr. Takano Tifuni. After using multiple test subjects (i.e. those "demoned away"), Miyo determined that the root cause of the Syndrome is a microscopic brain parasite native to the mountain valley of Hinamizawa. As such, everyone who remains in Hinamizawa for extended periods of time become host to the parasite. The parasite can apparently only exist in Hinamizawa's unique climate, and very negatively affects the host's brain chemistry if the host is away from Hinamizawa for extended periods of time or if the host undergoes abnormal mental stress (remember, many of the characters already have histories of mental abuse or psychological stress).

From Miyo's research, she also noted that Rika (or rather the Furude line) possessed a substance in their blood that sedated the parasite (something akin to a calming pheromone). This is where things become a little dicey. Miyo hypothesized that without someone from the Furude bloodline around to continue producing the pheromone, then the parasites would behave erratically and immediately escalate the hosts' condition to L5, the terminal stage of Hinamizawa Syndrome (clawing one's own throat out). Rika learned of this, and therefore has never tried to run away from the village (This offers a direct explanation to Oishi's question at the end of Himatsubushi-hen: "If Rika knew that someone was planning to take her life, why didn't she simply leave the village?" Simply put, everyone she cared about in the village would die if she fled.). This is known as the "Queen Carrier Theory." Even though Miyo had successfully validated Dr. Tifuni Takano's theory of a brain parasite existing in Hinamizawa, the organization that Miyo works for, TOKYO, does not believe that even a brain parasite could directly control the actions of sentient beings.

The problem with theories is that they can be neither proven nor disproven without experimentation, so Miyo had to figure out a way to prove her theory. Again, her entire motivation in life is to prove her and Tifuni's theories and in his words, become immortal or "become God." Even though Dr. Irie Kyusuke had developed a drug to replicate the suppressing effect of Rika's blood, Miyo had also developed a weaponized version of the parasite (TOKYO's funding of Miyo's investigation of Hinamizawa Syndrome was contingent on her results yielding a potential biological weapon that could secretly circumvent the WWII treaty signed by Japan). However, even this version had to be injected directly into a subject's bloodstream, so it could not be effectively used on a mass populace.

The rival faction would overtake the current one if there was a Syndrome-based disaster in Hinamizawa, because everyone in TOKYO would know that it occurred due to the poor leadership of the current leading faction. Therefore, Miyo took the bold step to kill Rika and test her theory (This was "necessary," since Rika would never agree to an extended leave of the village if it meant risking everyone's lives). Theoretically, everyone is supposed to develop signs of L5 within 24 hours of the Queen's death, but to ensure that her theory is "correct," Miyo orders the extermination of all residents of Hinamizawa. The majority of them are gathered into various parts of the school, which are then sealed and nerve gas is released. This explains why everyone who died in the school look like they are gasping and HAVEN'T clawed their throats out (as indicative of L5). Any survivors or escapees were then hunted down and killed, and their bodies were disposed of. Miyo plays her role, the current leading faction of TOKYO is replaced by the rival faction, Miyo gets her theories recognized, and Miyo "becomes God" (recall Miyo's confrontation with Rena in Minagoroshi-hen: "Are you trying to act as Oyashiro-sama's proxy?" What does 'nipah' even mean?

It's meant to be cute, although I also heard Nipah means beam, so it's probably just onomatopoeia, when rika's happy, she just looks up and beams a smiling face at them before saying "Nipah", like how Hanyuu does the "hauuuu....." thing when she's frustrated, so just a little catch phrase to convey emotion. If you pay close attention, you'll notice her more mature self never uses the term.
