Maria-sama ga Miteru Live-Action Movie, Expectations and Speculation
This thread is to discuss your expectations of the Maria-sama ga Miteru Live-Action Movie (due for release in the Autumn of 2010) and to speculate as to what story elements will be used.
A discussion thread (with poll) will be created when the movie is actually released (AnimeSuki would consider it currently as unlicensed) so please use this thread to discuss your expectations of the announced movie. <end of edit by Mod (xris)> Not 100% official yet, but we may need a thread for the Autumn 2010 live-action movie (4MB PDF, in Japanese). EDIT: The key text is in the black box about halfway down the page: 「マリア様がみてる」 2010年秋実写映画化決定 Link taken from Yuri na Hibi.

Also reported on ANN:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...on-film-listed Let the speculation begin. My initial wild guess: a movie version of the first arc. Update: According to ANN, Yumi will be played by Honoka Miki, and Sachiko by Haru. Last edited by mitsuganae; 2010-04-02 at 15:36. |

OK, we have an official site and some reasonably substantial information. Mods, can it be thread time now please?

It seems like requests for a movie thread are like screams into the abyss. For those few still interested, the main cast has been revealed.

I've look into the pics of Actresses that will play in it. They all look so cute. Good choice for Yumi and Yoshino. Still not convinced for the actress that will play Sachiko though. And where is Shimako?
My guess is the movie will be a retelling of first three episodes. Since almost all Anime turned live-action always turns as a new retelling of the old story. |

Mmm, I wondered the same thing... If they mis-cast the White Roses there shall be nerd rage the likes of which hasn't been seen since Phantom Menace!

It'll be interesting to see how they merge the books into one continuous movie. I mean both the anime episodes and the drama CDs have breaks between them, so they fit the structure of the novels, but a two-hour movie is a different sort of beast.

I just happened to pass by the movie site and found that they've chosen the cast for Shimako. Looking forward to how she'll look in the movie..

Let's see... According to Cobalt's website ( http://cobalt.shueisha.co.jp/ ), based on the banner they put up, the premiere is set on November 6 (subject to change).
And, what else I have here? Ah, yes, here's two of these scans from this blog: Addendum: Big deal of updates here: http://community.livejournal.com/gar...ns/233293.html

Just got my movie guide book and November issue of Cobalt from Amazon. The guide book is pretty: its 100 glossy pages include lots of cast and scene photos, actor comments, a section comparing movie scenes to the original illustrations in the novels, a few pages of Hibiki Reine's art, an extended discussion between Konno Oyuki, Miki Honoka and Haru, and an interview with director Terauchi Kōtarō (who I hadn't realised until now directed the live-action adaptation of Tonari no 801-chan). Even if you can't read a word of Japanese it's well worth any Marimite fan's Y1000.
From the credits listing at the back we learn that the movie theme song is Heavenly Days by CooRie (it's also the title track of her next album). And in a case of life imitating art, the movie version of Maria-sama no Kokoro is sung by the choir of a real Catholic girls' school, Caritas College in Kawasaki. November's Cobalt comes with a 16-minute "making of" DVD that starts with a couple of movie trailers then has lots of random behind-the-scenes stuff. We get to see the cast rehearsing and horsing around between shots - if this preview is anything to go by, expect the waltz scene to play a big part in the movie. There are also some good views of the setting including the Yamayurikai building, and of course food features prominently Cobalt also has the Konno / Miki / Haru chat from the guidebook, and a new short story (「卒業式まで」 Sotsugyōshiki made "Until Graduation"). I haven't sat down with a dictionary to try reading it yet, but like the other recent short stories it seems to be about Lillian students we haven't met before.

Dunno why the comm somehow got a bit silent, but Odette delivered the goods again.
http://community.livejournal.com/gar...ns/236494.html While Miki was real damn cute, Haru knocked me out real good. One thing's for sure: the way I look at Sachiko will never be the same again, and I think I really like her. http://jollyroger.jp/news/2010/04/post-302.php Damn! ------------ EDIT: More stuff, cross-posted from the LJ comm... The mag now includes a DVD of the making of the live-action movie, and just follow the link below: http://tenslives.blog70.fc2.com/blog-entry-3119.html Pic 1: Haru (Sachiko) bunching up with the rest of the cast. Pic 2: Tsutako (Alice Hirose) glomps Yumi. Pic 3: Before the Play. Pic 4: Riho Takagi as Shimako. Pic 5: Kaoru Hinata as Yoko. Pic 6: Miki (Yumi) having a cocoa/tea break. Pic 7: Haru feels like having a blast! Pic 8: Yumi turns around and... Pic 9: Karen Takizawa as Sei, brooding a bit. Pic 10: Nana Akiyama as Eriko, slightly goofy. xD Pic 11: Rikako Sakata as Rei, looking worried. Pic 12: Riho (Shimako) with that dewy look. Wonder if she could match Mamiko Noto in the voice department. Pic 13: Hitomi Miyake (Yoshino), in the same quiet state as her first episode persona. Pic 14: Our favorite shutterbug just ready to shoot. Pic 15: "Onee-sama..." Pic 16: "Yes?" Pic 17: I wonder if that's the scene when she and Yumi were alone at the auditorium. Pic 18: Made of awe and win: a WAFF moment when she cries her heart out. Anyone getting this issue would be real lucky; a collector's item! EDIT: OMG, there's more? Yep, this is the CM: http://tenslives.blog70.fc2.com/blog-entry-3093.html And more pictures? YEAH!

One thing I've been wondering about lately is whether the film will follow the novels and state outright that Suguru is gay, or take the anime's route and leave the question somewhat open. To me, a "romantic" rejection (even if only implied) would sting more than a rejection due to sexual preference. Each possibility colours Sachiko's misandry somewhat differently.
Then again, maybe I'm just overthinking. |

All right, people, everything's all set for tonight's premiere (November 6).
For me, it remains to see if the film adaptation would remain true to the book, or follow the anime adaptation... or try a different twist. Our mileage may ultimately vary on the film's outcome, and how well the cast would deliver the goods, but then, who knows? But I'm looking forward to watch this. By the way, a few more links of interest: Jolly Roger: http://jollyroger.jp/news/2010/11/post-438.php - artwork, I think. http://jollyroger.jp/news/2010/11/post-437.php - Flash-powered CM http://jollyroger.jp/news/2010/10/post-436.php - tie-in promo with Curemaid Cafe tenslives: http://tenslives.blog70.fc2.com/blog-entry-3135.html - tie-in with http://www.bijint.com/jp/ http://tenslives.blog70.fc2.com/blog-entry-3131.html - a few more close-in pics of the cast, along with short bios. Cobalt: http://cobalt.shueisha.co.jp/fair10/index.html - movie tie-in promo, I think. Finally, the Flash animation CM: http://www.mariasama-movie.jp/mannerCM.html Well, Kana Ueda and Miki Ito are back. Will anyone translate this CM (marked with an encircled "1", "2" and "3")?

Erica Friedman's verdict is "unexpectedly excellent". 855san on 2ch says the audience was a real variety of people, and somewhere between a quarter and a third female (so not just creepy otaku guys!) I actually expected to see more discussion on 2ch by now - maybe I'm not looking in the right place?
And those animated CMs are seriously cute
