Are we sure that they didn’t just slap the Garo brand on it and inject some Garo-elements into this anime? I mean, it wasn’t there in the earlier promo materials, right? So, unless MAPPA planned this to be a marketing-twist like the last Blair Witch movie some time ago, I feel like they decided to make this a Garo series later in the game. It’s kinda like how Toei made Hibiki into a Kamen Rider show even though the original concept (as well as the final product, to some extend) is meant to be something else and does not really fit the Kamen Rider mold.

There was also this old announcement, https://forums.animesuki.com/showthr...highlight=garo. So, if nothing else the franchise had always planned on doing another animated series.

Well, this is certainly a pleasant surprise.
Garo shows -- both live action and animated -- are always a bit of a coin toss as far as writing quality goes, and I don't know even the tiniest thing about what Kiyoko Yoshimura's writing is like, but at the very least it looks like it'll be an impressive visual spectacle.

It's really funny how one detail can shift my entire perception. If this was an original show my reaction to this trailer would have been "yawn, I guess I'll watch one episode for the animation". Knowing that it's a Garo show, though, I'm all "I have to wait six more days for the first episode? come on, Friday!"

First episode is out!
Wow, this was cool. OP song is cool although I personally prefer the first Garo theme song. A modern setting Garo with motorcycles, bikes, and dark city. Sword seems like an interesting character as I expect the show to explore more of his past. His role from this episode shows that he is daring and not afraid to take risks. I'm also curious to see how this anime plans to develop his relationship with Sophie, a girl she met in city. Seems the two are pretty different but has a connection. Solid first episode. As this takes place in a more modern setting, I expect more epic road action like the ones from this episode.

I would say this is really trying to be cool... I guess on some level it succeeds, but otherwise it does come off as hilariously tryhard, even for the franchise. At least it was entertaining and the fights were fairly cool, if not very well-directed, so there's that.
But, well. I suppose it's part of the show going for a retro-ish "this is what US audiences like, right?" thing, but I could really really do without the T&A and Sword's eye-rollingly macho attitude. The latter is annoying and clichéd, while the former is exactly the kind of shoehorned-in-for-no-reason fanservice that I find alienating and obnoxious. (At least make them nice T&A! Roller skate girl's boobs looked terrible and the animation was just awkward.) From the trailers and the ending I'm already rolling my eyes at the other girl's outfit and the treatment she's probably going to get, and so now I'm waiting to see whether they'll have the guts to make the fanservice equal-opportunity. Counting on you, Luke. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic.) Still, it was fairly entertaining otherwise, so for now I'm in. For now. |
