The Parasytes' design look sweet in this PV. I had almost forgotten how terrifying they looked.

Those designs look pretty great, especially in motion. My previous worries are obliterated now, the PV was fantastic, I only hope this show gets 25 episodes.

He's complaining about the design of the protagonist, not the art style. This pic is from very late into the manga, it's not representative of what he's supposed to look like early on in the story. That said, anime Shinichi still looks nothing like his manga counterpart, but I expect him to get a more badass design later on. He won't look like a nerd for long. They probably gave him that kind of design to make the disconnect between early Shinichi and late Shinichi more obvious.

Like Kanon said to make him look more nerdy, or weak, or whatever you want to call it so that his later appearance seems more stark in contrast.

But he never was a 'nerd' or 'weak' in the first place. Even in the first chapter, just from the way he interacts with his parents, his teacher, his friends, girls, you can tell he's one of those guys who can socialize pretty easily and can assert himself when he needs to. He's decisive and takes in the reality of the situation fairly quickly. He has his own ideas about what to do and acts on them with agency.

Whereas the whole glasses/nerdy haircut look in the anime design is one that is usually associated with quiet unassertive protagonists that have trouble socializing and making decisions. The story isn't about Shinichi doesn't go from zero to hero. It's about a normal guy pushed into a journey where he has to struggle with the monster he's becoming.

The two Shinichi seem completely different at this point, so it's more speculation than outright spoilers. We don't really know what the anime intends to do with him, it's just my assumption that he will steadily get closer to his manga self throughout the run of the anime.
