The prestigious Taishos are the equivalent of the science-fiction Nebulas.

Wish I can contact them and ask them to be invited to Anime Expo with Madoka theme.

Huh?

How the hell does Madoka qualify as science-fiction? Seriously, those entropy things QB mumbling about wasn't enough to take it as a science-fiction. IMO If there is any anime to win that award this year, it should be Steins;Gate.

Well, the Hugos and Nebulas are "Science Fiction or Fantasy", and I presume this applies to the Japanese awards, too (Magical Girl-wise, Card Captor Sakura won a Seiun award a few years ago)

Time travel. Time loops. Aliens. Entropy. Slightly futuristic setting (many speculate that Madoka Magica takes place sometime a few decades in the future, I'm inclined to agree).

Just enough between it all that I can kind of see Madoka Magica working as sci-fi as a secondary category.

I agree with you here, though. Steins;Gate is much more sci-fi than Madoka Magica.

Checking here, this is the closest explanation from a commenter as to why this show got qualified:

Quote:
Warning: Spoilers Ahead. Read at your own peril.
There are elements of sci-fi, such as entropy and aliens (Kyubei), and arguably, the 'magic' in the show is a highly advanced form of energy manipulation that is harnessed to perform meaningful work. The ability to circumvent the 2nd law of thermodynamics (Perpetual Motion) through an exploitation of sentient emotion in girls and introduce new energy into a closed system (the universe) is science fiction in nature. Entropy, as you know, is 'heat death', meaning that all the energy in the closed system (the universe) is spread over in perfect equilibrium, meaning that no 'work', the 'good' kind of energy transfer can be done. In PMMM, the alien race that we know as Incubators, found a method of generating new energy into the closed system (the universe) by making 'magic girls' and 'witches', since sentient life-forms are capable of doing so (in PMMM, anyway). This slows down the progression of the universe's demise because a new source of energy that previously DID NOT EXIST in the closed system, means that there can be more 'good' energy transfer (work), and stave off heat death (energy equilibrium) because of a difference in energy gradients (the new source of energy must make it's way across the rest of the universe now in order for the universe to reach entropy again. Presumably, the Incubators are capable of harnessing, storing, and using this energy in ways that cannot be fathomed by the human mind. The exploration of the concept of time, causality and parallel universes could be understood as inspired by sci-fi, although it was more metaphysical in nature than it was quantified, in the show. As for the 'magic', if we understand the closed space as a pocket dimension, the witches a dimensional distortion singularity, and the magic girls that use magic as gifted with advanced energy/mass manipulation, magic=science.

And that writers' association had a long relationship with Clarke, so I think the show was a homage to their patron.

More power to anyone fortunate to be living in Singapore (or can afford air fares), due to close proximity:

Those who are able to attend are free to post any news on the event.
